For under $8 you can buy one that's 30 meters long and basically use it for life. By the time you've run this thing out to it's full 3.5 meter length a few times, the chalk will have gotten all in the spring, ruining it and you'll still need to buy an actual chalk line.

That may be true, but then he couldn't have made a chalk line. I do wonder how long it will work before the spring gets dried out and gummed up just like any other tape does when they get too dirty inside. I buy my tapes from harbor freight. I get the super coupon, buy anything for 4 dollars or more and get a tape for free. I buy a tape and get one free, 2 dollar tape that way. When they are that cheap they can be replaced. The ones I take to work normally only last about a year, but the 10 or so I have at home I've had for years. It is the 1' X 25'

I'm a plumber, my tape measure is about 5yrs old. Use it everyday and its still clean and new, I use a folding rule for the short stuff and the tape for over 1m I buy quality stuff and look after it. Also chalk lines are not used nearly as much now we have good lasers that run all day on a drill battery.

"that's not to mention it might work once or twice but not much more than that" You already demonstrated to be categorically false on what is wasting material and I'm supposed to accept your opinion on how long something would last that you would never make as opposed to someone who has actually done it?
