    R. L. Stine I always took home with me when I went to the library. When I was younger, I devoured all the Goosebumps books several times, and later Fear Street. Before I fell for Stephen King, my King of Horror was definitely Stine.

I read Gilded and Cursed which is the 2nd book this year and I absolutely loved them both, I agree some parts were questionable but I am a sucker for fairy tale retellings. I also had them on my shelf for quite a long time and one of my reading resolutions was to read some of my older books or get rid of them. Glad you had fun with reading it. 🙂

Lots of people believe there are two different kinds of YA-'Upper YA' & 'Lower YA'. I'm not super familiar with where / how exactly most people do or don't divide the two, but perhaps it is possible that Gilded might be closer to the latter while the Lunar Chronicles might be closer to the former? 🤔 I'm kinda curious if anyone else has any thoughts on whether this might or might not, in fact, be actually the case?.😊🤔😁😁

Thank you for the joy of watching your video! I read _Gilded_ 2 years ago and really enjoyed it, even if the complete story (with _Cursed_) wasn't my favorite. That's on me, though. I really don't care for dark fantasy, and for some reason I didn't realize this story was in that genre until halfway through, so it just didn't quite click with me. What you said about how Meyer's style doesn't blend well with that sub-genre made total sense, though. Great insight. I'm curious: What was the one "absurd and weird" thing in _Gilded_?

I'm a first fan of Marissa meyer. I've read the lunar Chronicles loved them. Read the renegades trilogy loved it. Read heartless, heartbreaking but great. For me she's the queen of retellings. BUT gilded fell flat for me. As you said it read very young but that's ok, the lunar Chronicles at times read young too, bit that's not what I was expecting from this book,, I didn't care for the characters or the plot. I was so disappointed. I still need to read her contemporary to see how she done that but I will still have an eye on what she writes next

Argyle made me think that a writer managed to get their self insert fan fiction produced into a movie. Half over the top cringe with a very tenuous plot, like it’s not necessarily well written but also like a comfort read. Like a fanfic you stay up late to finish despite not being technically well written. It was like fun guilty pleasure.

Apparently the movie(script) came before the book, and the producers hired a ghostwriter to basically make the book in the movies real. Which is why the book does not cover what happens in the movie but is literally the book the author in the movie wrote. I explained it so poorly but hopefully you understood

Nothing but Blackened Teeth was on my worst list as well. The characters were insufferable. I disagree with you on the writing style though. I hated it. The author was clearly trying to sound clever by using advanced vocabulary but it read like someone with a thesaurus without actually understanding the connotation or true meaning of the words she was using. Then there were metaphors that made no fucking sense. I HATED the writing style so much that the author went to my never read again list.

I've been on the fence about Gilded, but you've pushed me off onto the 'willing to give it a read' side! The worst book of 2023 for me was 'The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires' by Grady Hendrix. I pushed myself to 50% before it became my first ever DNF. It is a shining example of why *some* men should never be allowed to write characters who are women. It also has a lot of racist undertones which, yes it's the deep south in the 80's, but I feel like the author really used that as an excuse to just not even try for any sort of unproblematic representation, and instead even leaned into it. ANYWHO, needless to say, not a book I recommend to anyone despite the awesome title and fun premise.

Not a specific title (well, lots but too many to name her) but I am OVER thrillers with unlikable characters. You lose all sense of what is intriguing or suspenseful about a thriller when you hate the characters you're suppose to root for!! It's just lazy in my opinion and I ran into way too many last year. I'm being so much stricter when I look for thrillers this year.
