I Read "Nightbane" the Sequel to "Lightlark" by Alex Aster So You Don't Have to...

Ойын-сауық

I really wanted to use the joke "more like 'Nightbane of my existence' amirite!?" but it wasn't bad enough for that to funny. Also was ready to shell out some yolk puns that would really crack you up...but nothing was yolky...
anyways... Thanks for watching!

Honestly I think its VERY telling that after all the infamy Lightlark got, I haven't heard a damn word about Nightbane since it came out, especially since it got released the same day as Iron Flame. It didn't even earn the status of being hated in the public eye (to the degree of Lightlark), it just got ignored. Which in some ways honestly almost feels worse.

My fan hypothesis (started by Julian Greystoke's read along of Lightlark) that has not much basis other than then the author not being comfortable enough to have competing love dudes Oro and Grimfart interact together in a scene is that Oro and Grimfart are the same dude just wearing different clothing and wigs to play two different people as the real kings have run off to get married leaving this imposter to maintain the peace and deal with a 19 year old woman with emotionally problems and anger management issues. I know Alex Aster will not be brave enough to ever do this, but it would make everything worse which would make things better for me and only me. Also Lightlark gave me my ironically favorite character, Cleo, as the author does her best to make hate her for being older, responsible, willing to make sacrifices for other people (it made me really dislike Isla when she called Cleo a loser and pathetic for choosing to be responsible ruler over just ditching her people like Isla seeking her own happiness over all else would do and never coming to understand how Cleo would come to a different life goal than Isla) and make her the villain for not liking the special and perfect Isla, even though it seems Cleo is just annoyed by Isla.

I also immediately think of Grimmjow whenever i read Grim’s name, which is an insult to Grimmjow because he’s an icon, he’s the moment, and this wish version of alternate universe kylo ren doesn’t even deserve to lick his heels

This has me sobbing. But I do like how people realize the writing is bad instead of being like "oh but it's fun". Is it fun? Is it? *insert thor meme here*. Edit: "He tasted like summer. Like biting into a fresh strawberry over looking a pond while the wind cooled your skin." I have Aphantasia, so atmospheric writing is the death of me, but I couldn't help but be tempted to try to emulate what you spoke about.

Excellent Thor reference and I like that line you wrote! That’s what I’m talking about. Like obviously I think people can write as atmospheric as they want. But if something “sounds silver” I won’t know what they mean exactly and will get lost.

Dude I gotta say, comparing Nightbane to Little Ceasers is heresy. I get it, its cheap yeah but at least its half decent. I'd compare Nightbane to Papa John's cause honestly. Its flat, no flavor, and even with the bottom 5 Pizza spots in mind, its still at the bottom of the barrel.

There are Five Character Arcs: The Upward Arc or the Ascent, where they learn from their flaws, take in a vital truth, and become better. Most Heroes go on this arc. The Downward Arc or the Descent, where a character is unable or unwilling to face their flaws and become worse by indulging them. Most villains go through this arc. There is the Flat Arc, where the character carries a vital, often simple, truth out into the world, not improving themselves but those they interact with. Lastly is the Static Arc, where a character does not grow beyond themselves or any deeper, usually a sitcom character or a Mary Sue. Finally the bounding arc, where they act arbitrarily based on whatever the writer needs them to do, usually an amateurish author who hasn't developed a big enough world or filled it with enough characters. So you get the very bad, no good, super mean villain who chooses to be honorable because even he isn't THAT evil, but what ho, it's a double cross. But he's not so bad. Capybaras live alongside large cats like Jaguars, Caimans, and Piranhas. They're odd creatures, living in large groups of 10-20, mainly defenseless, yet generally not skittish around predators. For the most part, one or two get eaten, the rest of them go on their merry way, and the well fed predators leave them alone. You can see pictures of them just chilling with a jaguar or riding on a caiman across a river. Because what's it really going to do? And maybe it's that assertive behavior that makes predators think they aren't food sometimes.

I clicked on this video because I can’t find anyone reviewing this book!!! I really liked lightlark and I really liked this book until the ending. It’s only now that I’m seeing that these books aren’t….liked? And like that’s fine; that’s not the point. The point is that the ending extremely pissed me off and there is no closure AT ALL! you are so right 37:11 “wtf is up with snake lady?” Like all of that, nothing is closed. I’m so upset with it! I am very invested and yet the ending is shit. I’m not looking forward to the overall ending at all. Anyway, you were amazing! Just found your channel, super cool. Love the nails and the aura of your channel. Thanks dude!

the nail color. the lighting in the background. giving me the PERFECT vibes to go along with the cover. i'm amazed at how little i've seen about this sequel because the first one was so widely discussed - but i think that's kind of indicative of the books themselves? like.. lightlark might've been forgettable to the readers and then the sequel comes out and they don't have any interest in it? idk! but thank you for reading it so we don't have to!

I laughed my ass off when you called him Oreo. It's probably because that's the level of goofiness I expect from an Alex Aster novel. In a world of yolky things and other food analogies, we now have a character whose name gets mispronounced as Oreo. Haha! Great review, D! Thanks for reading these books so we don't have to!

Jaguars are also known as Brazilian panthers, they're in various parts of South America like capybaras and humming birds. These animals were extremely important to the indigenous MesoAmericans and still hold a lot of importance to the remaining indigenous peoples. It sounds like she may have also borrowed the concept of the Tzotzil's wayhel/wayjel...or she was ripping off something like Harry Potter or the concept of Spirit Animals and just applying it to "the natives." Wayhels don't have a ceremony or anything as they're an extension of someone's soul (the 2nd external one), what she did was just odd and like she was trying to make it a novel thing or a plot device for the sake of writing in a novel thing or a plot device. After watching this and Rachel's review, I don't think I'll pick up this series because of how indigenous people are used. I also think she forgets what she writes and doesn't take notes ...

I don’t think The author has any real intention of going deep or exploring themes or character development or anything like that, she just wants to tell a silly ‘romance’ story and make money off of it and be seen as a “writer” on the level of Maas. Which is why I think there’s not a lot of chatter about this sequel? It’s all empty and surface level and above all else forgettable. And people forgot.

I will admit I enjoyed Lightlark in a so-bad-its-good sort of way. Most of the opinions I see on this book make it seem like the writing has improved, but not enough to make it good which leaves it somewhere in the purgatory that is "boring". The first book was bad in the way people could say something about it which made other people talk about it. I wouldn't be shocked if this series was cancelled by the publisher before it can conclude.

15:49 funny enough panthers can be, amongst othe big cats, melanistic jaguars, who do indeed exist where capybaras do and also eat them often. Still a nonsense, terrible book though .
