I imagine I have some L takes in this video as it is my first ever read through of the series, and some concepts I may have missed the mark on. I think this is a series I will need to read more than once in order to fully understand it all, and I have the entire anime to look forward to too, so I imagine with time I may feel differently on certain storylines and arcs (and even the ending… maybe) 😄

Oh yes, definitely ! This story feels like it was written to be read/watched more than once for all the hidden foreshadowing, even through the dialogues ! I have watched the show so many times, even now I am currently rewatching it with a friend who has never seen it before, and it keeps blowing my mind 🖤

I would reread, watch the anime, and look into the manga artist's life a bit. There are definitely correlations between what was going on in the author's life and how it shows in the manga.

I believe I read somewhere that the author considers the anime to be closer to his ideal vision of the story, even though it doesn't actually make any drastic changes. So watching that as well as videos about all the foreshadowing in the series might be good. Won't make you like the manga's ending though lol

Oh girl, about the big revelation of the Armored Titan and the Colossal Titan, I feel you. Reading it on paper must have been so weird, but once you get there in the show, you’ll understand that the feeling of "is this a joke ?" was intentional. The author actually directed the voice actors during that scene, telling them to speak like they are chilling at a restaurant - and then comes the transformation and OMG…. this is a full body chills experience 🤯😭🔥 And there’s no better way to experience AOT but in the sub version, so glad you are doing this!

I think a large part it why the reveal was dropped in casual conversation was because Reiner was having a bit of a mental breakdown. This is the first time we see the cracks in his armour start to appear as he grapples with being a double agent and not knowing where his allegiances truly lie. We then go on to see him grapple with this for a lot of the remaining series, but this is kind of where it truly begins, at least for the reader/viewer

Why Eren did the Rumbling- When he says he had no choice because of the future he saw, he meant that because he is the one with the power he could only do things the way his brain works. He says in the show/ or the manga, that it all happened because he was an idiot. He couldn’t think of another way and he knew that in the end he would just resort to violence (like he always has) so that’s why he did what he did. It’s not that genocide was the only objective option, but more so it was the only option for HIM. If he was wiser like Armin, the outcome would have been different. The message is that someone undeserving got the power and he used that power selfishly - to protect his friends in the most drastic way possible. He also says he did it just b/c he wanted to, because he fell in love with the idea of a clean world that could be explored but when he left the walls all he saw was more hate and oppression. He wanted the world that Armin convinced him existed (the ocean and the outside world they could explore), that’s why Armin feels guilty because he introduced Eren to that idea. It's slightly more well done in the show.

I didn't realise how messed up Reiner's mental health was until my 2nd buddy watch. The way he was switching personalities 🤯 He wasn't simply torn between two sides, he literally developed a double personality. How did I miss that !! Both the revelation and the conversation on the trees gain further depth when you realise that. I was like "OMG this is so f*ed up" the whole time.

I love the extra pages of the kid discovering the tree and how it acts as a direct parallel to when Ymir first discovered the tree. When Ymir found it she was running for her life while being hunted down by dogs, meanwhile the kid at the end of the story, is seemingly travelling and exploring the ruined area with a domesticated dog as a companion. Automatically framing the scene as being lighter just from that. Remember in chapter 137 Zeke explains how the titan powers and the Paths were created out of Ymir's subconscious desires. She created a strong titan body to defend herself from the attackers, and once she died she created a world free of even death (the paths) which was also created out of her desire for connection with others, hence why every Eldian is linked to The Founding Titan which is her. This implies that, that worm creature, whether it be the source of all living matter or whatever, is essentially a wish granting creature that grants powers based on the inheritor's unique desires. So if the boy were to walk into the tree and obtain that power it could be something drastically different from what Ymir created, it could be a power that helps create and flourish things in such a barren environment. I like the framing of the ending since it's neither overly optimistic or nihilistic. It suggests that conflict may be something unavoidable that will persist as long as humanity itself does, but also argues that at the same time, people will constantly struggle to escape the metaphorical forest and keep trying for as long as it takes to make a better future for the next generation and the next, etc.

Lets goo! I think you'll enjoy the anime more. It really elevates the experience Having said that- So the thing about Eren that is very present throughout the story but it is difficult to grasp is that Eren never changed as a character. He was always this child with an abnormal penchant for violence who was always looking for "freedom". In ch 131 and the final chapter the real confession that we get from eren wasnt that he did it all for his people which was definitely one of his reasons but the real big and shameful reason was that he did it because he "wanted to". When he saw the sea with mikasa & armin, he couldn't enjoy it like them because he of the realization that there were people on the other side and they would always had to be at war. He couldn't deal with the complexity of the world. He couldnt let go of his childhood dream of seeing "water made of ice, lands made of ice, fields of sand" like in Armin's book. And when he realized that the world wasn't like he dreamed of he was disaapointed and wished for all of it to get wiped off. Like a child destroying his toys. But here the child is eren and he had too much power to put it to use. He remainded caged by his desire for freedom never quite grasping it with him achieving true freedom only in death by the hands of Mikasa who in in my opinion is the freest character(I'll have to go in a deep dive about her character from thw begining which runs parallel to eren's but is more subtle). Attack on titan has a lot to say about freedom, external freedom like freedom of countries which should he fought for and achievable but it also delves into freedom of self which is impossible achieve as long as you live in this world. You can only be free, if you go looking for it outside, you will forever remain caged by yourself. It's a complex dichotomy it presents.

Ive only just heard you mention this bit in the video so i have 0 clue if you picked back up on this point later on lol , but with the reiner and bert reveal the reason it is so great and considered one of the best plot twists in the whole show is exactly because of the way its done. The fact that this seemingly massive plot point that is assumed to be an end of series reveal gets revealed to us in such a nonchalant manner half way through the show is crazy. Especially how its done in the anime , you have to sort of double take the subtitles for a sec🤣I'll carry on with the vid but i just wanted to write this 😭 Ive now got towards the end and would like to say that Isayama - the mangaka - actually wrote a different ending but then manga fans were complaining about how it felt weird which left Isayama to come out with a couple more endings and its kind of a weird mess icl , the manga anyway. Im pretty sure the anime goes with the original ending but polishes up some dialogue and scenes especially between armin and eren when they meet in his memories. I'm not 100% sure which of the endings the official manga print has or if there are different versions someone else will have to let me and you know i guess but yeah I personally think the ending in the anime was near perfect for the show and the original message it was trying to portray but media is subjective and if we all viewed the same piece the same way it would be a boring world.

(This comment contains spoilers) This video was FANTASTIC, Gavin, thank you so much ❤ By the end of it, I literally had to write down all your confusion because I didn’t want to forget most of it while writing this comment 😂 But once you are done with the show, I hope you’ll tell us how you lived it and if your feelings are different from what you felt reading the manga series, especially regarding the low moments you picked up on. And here some things you might enjoy to know: when you said at the beginning that these titans were things from nightmares, well that’s how the author got inspired to make them the monsters of his story. He was thinking about the one thing that could represents human’s worst nightmare, which is definitely us being completely defenseless and vulnerable against monsters, and this idea was emphasized by the fact that he used to work at a bar or a restaurant and some drunk assaulted him and he got quite traumatized. Also, Ymir (from the SC) and Historia are indeed a canon couple / at least, their feelings were mutuals. It’s part of the reasons why AOT is so different from other animes, because of the diversity. In the original version of the manga, Hange is never mentioned as a ‘she’ or a ‘he’, the author wanted to let the readers interpret her gender however they wanted to, but it was done differently for the international audience and the author let Hange be a ‘she’ for us. And there’s a fun fact about the creation of Levi’s character. The author is actually a big fan of BL, so when he sketched Levi, that’s what he had in mind, he said : ‘yaoi fans are going to love this’. He also has a kink for size differences 😂 and by the way he drew Erwin next to him, it’s not surprising at all (but this is sore spot for a portion of the fandom, we wonder why💀) And it’s okay if you didn’t quite get the moment Eren was reciprocating Mikasa’s feelings, because the japanese culture actually have a different approach to express their feelings compared to the western-ish ‘I love you’ and desperate kisses. Saying ‘thank you’, for example, is way more meaningful for them than saying ‘I love you’. If you remember the moment Mikasa kept thanking Eren for everything when Hannes died and it seemed they were all going to die, that was her confession. And Eren reciprocated by saying that he will wrap that scarf around her forever. That was it. And yeah, some people are a bit nitpicking saying ‘but this story is not set in a japanese culture’ - well, indeed it’s not, but it was still written by a japanese person, and incorporating parts of their cultural ways is a recurrent thing they do, no matter the setting of their stories, because this is the way they’ve grown to live and to express their feelings in everyday life. So yes, this story was not a romance at all but it was still able to convey beautiful love stories, realistically set in an apocalyptic world, in my opinion. I loved that Sasha was confusing you like ‘why, potato girl ?’ 🤣 but she was kind of the comedic relief of the story, a comforting character the viewer could relate to in all this darkness. And when she died, the author said that it was like the last flicker of light and hope has been extinguished, it was the catalyst moment of the dark turn the story took. And the parallel between her character and Gabi destroyed me. I LOVED that even though it’s hard to forget what she’s done, you are protective over Gabi 🙏 A lot of people are, but I still see a lot of people being so hostile with her, it’s very frustrating. Because her character was written with a precise purpose. She embodied the rotten seeds Marley planted in Eldian children’s head, as children are way more easy to manipulate from their emotions to their perspective on the world. Therefore, Sasha’s death was like the ‘necessery evil’ that cracked the door of Gabi’s redemption arc for she was deeply brainwashed and hated a group of people, that she didn’t even considered humans, to the core. I struggle a lot with people don’t understand the point of her character but… everyone’s entitled to their opinions. Mine is just that I will defend Gabi every time 🤍 and knowing the way Sasha was raised and her personality, I am convinced she would have forgave her. Now, I agree that the epilogue was a bit confusing, but I also found it realistic. Because, as we can see in our own world’s history and what’s currently happening, I think the message here was that at some point in time, humans eventually forget and we realize that we never learn from our mistakes, and so the cycle of hatred keeps going. But what I also loved about the end is the scenery of the tree. If you remember the first time we saw that tree, it was when the real Ymir was running for her life and when she found the tree, it was gloomy and scary while she was alone and at the verge of death. She runs inside it to escape death. And the epilogue shows us a little boy with his dog showing up before the tree, and the tree is like glowing and beautiful. And the boy is not running from anything and he has a friend by his side. That scene, I interpreted it as ‘hope’ and ‘life’. That’s like the image we need to cling on to in the dark times. And I think it also portrays the difference between Ymir (the god) and Eren. She was a slave of her love for the King and of submission, and Eren was a slave of freedom. Way before he inherited any titan, he already had this fire inside him and I think the Attack Titan made it worse because it’s a rebellious titan who is not meant to be chained. And looking back on every Reiss royal who inherited the Founding Titan and promised to save humanity once their time comes, but when it does, they always end up making the decision to do nothing, that’s because they’re shown the devastation their uprising would launch into the world. So now, take the Attack Titan + the Founding Titan + Zeke’s royal blood (to activate the founding titan’s power) : boom. And that’s why the rumbling stopped once Zeke got killed. No more royal blood. The Founding Titan’s power was deactivated, and Eren was actually in his full titan (the Attack Titan) form when he fought Armin. Eren actually tried to change the future, to prevent the rumbling from happening, from the moment he kissed Historia’s hand, because that’s the moment he saw everything happening and why he has changed so much. And I think the moment he bet everything was when he asked Mikasa about her feelings for him. Of course, he already knew she wouldn’t tell him, but we know what could have been if she had gathered the courage to do so. And I loved that you asked why Eren didn’t decide to make the titans go away if he could manipulate the past ? Because it made me think of Armin’s line : ‘only someone who can give up on his humanity can defeat the monsters’. Nothing would have changed if he had commanded the titans to turn away. But there is an interesting argument between Eren’s choice and Zeke’s plan in the fandom. Is creating an Alliance at the cost of 80% of humanity was worth it ? Or was Zeke’s euthanization plan better ? Still horrible, but much more of peaceful way to break the cycle of the suffering of Eldian people ? And yet, I can’t sit with the ladder because… Zeke’s plan aimed for an ethnic cleansing, when Eren’s plan aimed to give the whole world a reason to break his people free from the hatred they’ve been enduring for centuries so that they can live freely and be able to live normal and long lives and have families of their own. It is still selfish though, honestly, and I do not condone his decisions… but the rest of the world still held their Eldian inhabitants in internment zones… See ? There is no good side. So yeah, it took me a while to understand Eren in his last moments… And when you said his crying caught you off guard, it was intentional - a reminder that he is still 19 yo kid, and he actually never changed, he was just eaten by his father’s memories and the power that was passed on to him. Omg… if anyone in the comment section has read all of this ? I LOVE YOU 😭 and Gavin ? I’M SORRY AND I LOVE YOU TOO ❤❤❤❤ Thank you, thank you, thank you again for this amazing vlog 🔥

I did really enjoy the series but the ending disappointed me. Glad you experienced the series tho not sure whether you enjoyed it 😂 Some of my spoiler thoughts I don’t think Eren’s idea of freedom was positive to begin with.. I think the choices he made had few reasons behind them: 1. Yes he wanted to save his friends by killing his enemies and he knew if it was his friends who killed him they would be accepted by the rest of the world 2. But Eren never grew out of his childlike mental state, he remained as angry and violent, he got disappointed that the world was different from how he saw in Armin’s book, that the world wasn’t his to explore in a way 3. And imo his idea of freedom which is extremely flawed was the emptiness of the world.. 4. I also think he was angry that while having a big power abilities like looking into his own future he was still incapable of changing any future because it was set in stone.. and everything he did still brought him to the same conclusion cause his freedom was limited, making his obsession with freedom so desperate… 5. I don’t think Zeke changed his ideology but him realising that even playing a baseball with his “dad” was worthy enough reason to be born anyway… so then he decided to act and since he was providing the royal blood to Eren’s founding titan he knew that by killing him the rumbling would not work, the connection would be damaged between him and Eren.. so he reemerged to let Levi kill himself 6. I think what Ymir felt towards King Fritz was called “love” cause in her traumatic life of seeking connection she thought it was love.. idk it felt like a stockholm syndrome to me, I guess she felt helpless and needed someone to show her the path out and she found that in Mikasa who killed her loved one who in no way was as cruel to her as Fritz was to Ymir, so I see it not as a parallel but as a complete opposite of her. 7. I loved how Annie was the one who understood Mikasa’s feelings the most when guys started to pressure her into killing Eren 8. Hange is the badass !!! 9. It was never confirmed that the titan curse can return cause the worm in itself never was the source of titans, it was a source of life and by Ymir’s desire to create a bigger stronger body the worm helped her to created titans.. but that child going into the tree can use the source in a completely different way, so it’s still an ambiguous ending. I guess the whole point was that the cycle of violence will always continue and no matter what you do it’s in people’s nature to start a war and the managaka felt that it was the only way he could end the story cause otherwise it would’ve been cheap and not true to the AoT world.. I’d recommend you also to read his interview for New York times when he talks about how he as a managaka had his vision and how he felt as trapped into his story just like Eren felt trapped.. also he redrew the final scene between Armin and Eren cause he wasn’t satisfied with how it was done in the manga. Anyways thanks for the video!!!

I definitely think reading this as it was coming out was more enjoyable than binge reading it like you did. We had so much time between chapters to really mull over what happened and go wild on theories. Like the titan reveals, we had days and days to be like "YO THIS HAPPENED" with people and throw theories and it helped build excitement every single chapter. Imo, the manga definitely DROPS once we get to the time skip (Marley Arc and onwards) and absolutely depised the ending. But until that point I absolutely adored this series.

I had a very love hate relationship with the series. The anime got me back into anime post high school when it first aired. Then in the years long gap before season 2, I read the manga until the end of the royal government arc and thought that it was so bad I gave up on it and hated on the series for years. Then I gave the manga a 2nd try and fell in love with it again. I was kicking myself for stopping right before the return to shinganshina arc because I thought the basement reveal was so well done and I hadn’t managed to get spoiled on it. I caught up to the manga on the chapter right before eren and zeke enter the paths together, and was monthly for the 2 years until the end. I think the biggest issue with the end of the series was going into the last 3 chapters there was such dissonance between the fandoms perception of eren’s character and Iseyama’s. I felt everyone was so down for the completion of Eren’s corruption arc because with him being in the paths there didn’t seem like a way he could be stopped and a lot of people honestly didn’t want him to be. Then 137 happened and no main characters were dying against the army of titan shifters, armin just talked his way to victory in the paths, zeke died so lazily, Ymir loved the king who made her suffer so much and gave up, and eren was revealed to not be who we thought he was, and that was all a very hard pill to swallow. The last chapter made me so angry when it came out with armin and eren’s conversation in the paths. Eren going on his I love mikasa rant and not having a firm perception of reality it the paths, Armin thanking eren for committing genocide, and then there just being the most ham fisted fallout 3 “war never changes” ending felt so unsatisfying and like a stab in the gut after the roller coaster I’d had with the series. I was mad that I felt like the series had tricked me into thinking it was amazing and that I was right about it when I dropped it all those years ago. Iseyama added 8 pages to the ending when the volume came out but it didn’t fix it. And my anger faded over time. In the anime/manga sphere there are many variations of this ending, and one of which is considered by many to be one of if not the best anime ending of all time. I think the attack on titan version is inferior and in a lot of ways just baffling. Having been a monthly reader I’m not sure if the month to forget everything between chapters made me lose track of the potential foreshadowing, or there wasn’t any, or it was just not foreshadowed well at all. I watched the last anime episode when it came out to see if they changed anything. They hadn’t really. I just shrugged, said well that was dumb, and moved on. I think there are merits to the series looking back on it. Some of its highs and reveals were so high that I’ll always remember my reactions to them fondly, but If I ever re read Attack on Titan, I’d stop at chapter 136. Those last 3 chapters having nothing in them worth reading.

While i do get your frustration with the ending, i got to disagree with the narrative of a bleak ending being unsatisfactory. Maybe it's just me and my cynical mindset, but i think we need more stories that reflect the realities of our world even if it's fiction. All fiction doesn't need to have a clean and happy ending. And while i do think the execution of the ending was quite haphazard and wonky, i really think the idea of it was very apt. As long as humans are alive, there's going to be this cycle of war aand conflict and we're basically living it right now. But having watched your review i can understand that political and open ended, dark bleak stories really arent for you and that's totally fine too. But yeah, i do agree that the execution of the last few chapter was very abrupt, rushed and disappointing. I wish we took more time to sort out the character dynamics to make it more impactful and not so corny like it ended up being.

i few things i want to point out: - idk if someone mentioned this already but meat in japanese is niko and it sounds a lot like Nicco (Niccolo) so the implications are that shes calling his name and is implied they like each other (which is why Niccolo was pissed off at gabi's remarks). - dont forget that annie, reiner and bertholdt were still kids when they were sent into the mission. - the owl saw some of eren's memories thats why he said mikasa and armin - there is a theory that eren might be the real father of historia's child which i really want to believe so bad cuz its so good and the way the author drew the baby reminds me so much of baby eren esp the eyebrows! - also do u think mikasa married jean or no? because we never really see the man's face even in the anime - about zeke and eren, i think he still needs the royal blood to control everything thats why the rumbling stopped - i agree with all the romantic points cuz i dont feel that much chemistry between them and i was so pissed off that ymir stayed with that king because of "love" but then again i guess its possible cuz there are a lot of ppl that stay in abusive relationships regardless

Regarding Isayama's drawing style: He was sometimes pretty sloppy with the perspective and/or anatomical correctness, and from time to time his sloppiness made his characters look a little "off model" in some scenes. As the series was progressing, his drawing style was improving, but occasionally his sloppiness was still spoiling some of his drawings, although not as badly as in the beginning. However, there are three visual elements he actually did very well: --- Showing the dynamics of movements, which is an important thing in action scenes. --- Showing the emotions of the characters, not only on their faces but also through their body postures. --- Convincingly presenting the ages of persons. If you compare the scenes of: ** Armin showing Eren the book about the outside world ** Mikasa's back story and her first encounter with Eren ** the fall of Shiganshina ** the beginning of the Training Arc ** the Battle for Trost Arc you will see that in these scenes Isayama really made Eren, Mikasa and Armin look like being (respectively) 8, 9, 10, 12 and 15 years old, each time looking at least a little different. (IMO, the episode 1x03 screwed this up by making them look at least a year older than how they were supposed to look.) Also, I like how he gave his characters a whole specter of different body types.

Kinda wish you experienced this series in the anime first cuz it's a much better experience than the manga (the reveals are so well done and the animation is top tier 🔥) but I highly recommend watching videos on KZread showing you all the foreshadowing in the show cuz it's jaw-dropping !! Fun fact : in the 2022 anime awards Eren was nominated in both categories for best protagonist and best antagonist (he ended up winning the latter and Attack On Titan season 4 part 1 won anime of the year).

Sorry for the long wall of text, but I will say Erin should not be perceived as a good person in the end. There are some fans that still try and act like Erin is a "chad", but if you look into Isayama's biggest influences, it's a warning about why flawed people should never have unlimited power. He's cited Breaking Bad as an influence, which is why Erin has that line in the end about actually being a selfish idiot. The Eternal Champion series by Michael Moorcock is suspiciously similar (80% the same plot), and also a warning about Fascism. Muv-Luv, a dark visual novel that he's cited, also explores heavy political themes from what I've heard. And finally, Dune Messiah is clearly a massive influence on the series: the Path's (seeing the past, and directing the future) is just Prescience from the Dune series, and Erin is just Paul (Justifies putting himself in a position where he commits genocide, because he initially wanted revenge, and becomes Hitler). Erin is not a chad, he's a flawed human, not smart enough to think of something other than genocide.

Yep, a lot of people defend Eren because he claims that this is the only way to create a good outcome, completely ignoring that he also said he wanted this, that he never changed from when he was a kid, and that Eren is consistently shown to make numerous errors and mistakes throughout the series. It's just mindless "well he's the MC so he might be right..." thinking from some people.

  • @Mitchis_Euphoria

I think you missed the point a little towards the end. The reason Eren thinks it’s the best idea to kill 80% of the world is because out of all the futures he’s seen that’s the one where he sees it has the best out come. Obviously killing all those ppl is awful but the point is that he did have anger in him but the reason for doing it is also as a sacrifice. He didn’t want to tell what he saw of the future to Mikasa and armen. Bc he new theh would want to help and find a way to “save the world” or would help him commit those crimes if they new what his end goal was. Also the reason the idea of killing eren was a way to make peace is because it chose what side mikasa, armen and the others are on. One of Erens plan was to also purposefully become the villain, he wanted to be hated and disliked, bc he knew by doing that it would save his the ppl he cares for most. In a twisted way, he sacrificed himself in the begin, not just in death but the sins he committed. When he saw the future he didn’t want to do that he was freaking out. He didn’t necessarily want to kill those ppl, the think that was in a way making him go towards that were the visions. He didn’t want armen and mikasa to know as well bc he knew they would be there with him and he didn’t want them to have to commit such a big sin so he toke it on himself. And by creating a villain that both sides hate and want to take down, it creates an Alliance between them. It’s kinda like the enemy of my enemy is my friend. By Eren being the big villian and by mikasa and armen killing Eren, it make both sides have relief and feel united against one enemy even if they hated each other. Sorry if that sounds confusing but I tried to explain my thoughts best I could.

I feel like his intentions aren't that noble. He was chained to the idea of freedom, that he literally couldn't think of a better outcome, the Attack Titan showed him the future that only HE could conceive of, I believe that if someone else had the Attack Titan power, they wouldn't have seen genocide as the only choice.
