I Read All of Homestuck in Nine Days (and Here Are My Reactions)

Happy Homestuck Day! Despite what I claim in the video, not clickbait. Title is pretty much self-explanatory. I speedran all of Homestuck in nine days, and my reaction was making this hot mess of a video. Come for the outrageous claim, stay for the ensuing Karkat-esque mental breakdown.

Also your worry that the fans will murder you for messing up canon is funny to me, since Homestuck as a story breaks canon as a central theme. To me Homestuck is a ride with ups and down and mostly just a sandbox to play in, because it gives you "canon" ways anything is possible, even if they aren't "canon", y'know?

When you were talking about describing the plot to someone, I tried to imagine doing it, and then realized I'm not sure I even remember what others might consider main plot points, even though I've read HS multiple times and I love it... I barely even remember the ending. I feel weird saying this, but HS kinda transcended its own plot. Normally I care a lot about plot, but for HS, it's the culture, the rituals and specificity, it's *waves hands* it's THIS. It's what @terribleTerrestrial is pointing at. That's what I remember fondly from HS (plus reading forums and trying to solve a puzzle/ARG that probably didn't even exist, oops? It was very 2013, ok?). You expressed that beautifully here, which is why I totally agree that you effectively rewrote homestuck ("but make it a youtube video essay"). Commenting on [AH's slice of] internet culture in a twisted, comedic, personal, and bizarrely uplifting way is exactly what AH was doing back then, and I think it's neat to see that whole journey recreated in a new medium for this decade. this has been in my Watch Later queue for 2 months and i’m so glad i finally got around to watching it. i even almost gave up 5 mins in, when i disappointedly realized it was “just” gonna be 50 reaction images. buuuut then the 1st intermission came on and i was hooked. so glad i watched the whole thing. (even at 1.75x speed, like a madman.) i DIED laughing (with you, not at you!) at your perfect trollsona reveal, (and the pure silence that followed), i had to go back and watch it like 3 times. and i Lived, crying at the metamission. i know many others have already said this, but it’s such a perfect video encapsulating the homestuck obsession/ experience. this video made me retroactively hate myself so much less for making a (copperblood) trollsona (with a giant golden jackal lusus that he rides on) all those years ago, and also made me retroactively love all my “shitty” self insert fansession art, & my unintelligible archive of fansession writing prompts/ short stories ive made for myself and friends. because even if they’re not all that great, and no one will likely ever read them, i still put a bit of my heart and soul into them, in a pure act of creative energy that i couldn’t contain within myself, and they’ll always be perfect for that reason alone. so thank you again for making this masterpiece, and sharing it with the world, and especially our community of weirdos who love this “webcomic”, flaws and all. I don't think I've ever seen a Homestuck video like this before and it was genuinely so enjoyable, couldn't wipe the smile off my face when I realized what was going to happen in the intermissions !! I only read Homestuck back in November 2020, but I still really enjoy hearing from people who are new to it lol. Anyways vid was a 10/10. Your trollsona is wonderful and I would totally read that fanfic if it's not a bit lmao (also if anyone is actually reading this I second the point about Homestuck Made This World, I've been listening for a few months and it's very good) (Also also, the Homestuck AU project also follows the idea of Hs being a rough draft, and they've been rewriting and voicing the entire thing!! It's on funkmclovin's channel if anyone's curious, I personally think it's really good) ANYWAYS SORRY FOR THE WALL OF TEXT HAVE A NICE DAY

Oh! I should recommend to you the fan adventure "Vast Error." The post-story Homestuck canons are a clusterfuck, but the spirit of the comic is alive and well in some of its fan content. Vast Error has a lot of a stuff that made Homestuck great (worldbuilding, humor and dialogue, music, genuinely great characters and art) while avoiding some of the originals downsides (I'm mainly thinking about the pacing issues and digressions here. It doesn't have the same commentary on internet culture either.) Frankly I'm often tempted to recommend Vast Error over the original. Anyway, give it a shot if you've got some spare time, here's a link to a thingy from them kzread.info/dash/bejne/gGp4qq2JfLiumNI.html

I see people from so many vastly different walks of life, at so many different levels of scholarly knowledge and lived experience, from doctorate candidates doing dissertations on the work down to people making shitpost videos on youtube... and when they open up and talk about Homestuck in a serious way, there's this common thread. It's a consistent feeling, this discussion of the profundity of the act of creation, no matter how "serious" or whatever the piece in question might be. There's something real there, something genuinely universal, i think. I don't know how the hell it manages to get received so broadly by whoever experiences it, but it does, and that's fucking incredible. Also I think #25 "John Concerned Face" is vastly underrated.

oh god im going to have to try and keep this comment brief. okay first of all, i need you to know that if it were not for all the ways that it was apparent that your knowledge of fundamental homestuck was/is still growing, i would have assumed you were a long time fan of it. just. based on how well you encapsulate the feeling of homestuck and the VERY well made homestuck fanworks from when it was ongoing. i dont know if this is because of like, your friends' influence, or pop culture osmosis, or... you uniquely being well suited to things that Are particularly Homestuck so long as you pass a certain threshold and GET there or... if homestuck really just naturally transforms into this energy. I strongly suspect its a little bit of it ALL there. But it all combined into was was sincerely an extremely appropriate anniversary video. once that was also extremely vindicating for my thoughts on it too. see, i have been a homestuck since i think 2011-2012? later than many but certainly long enough, especially at this point, to wonder if certain things hold up about it to the kinda-sorta uninitiated. well would you look at that, they DO. and then the effects of the work you experienced ALSO follow relatably despite it being goddam 2022. especially when you talk about all that time dreaming. i dreamt, am dreaming, and will certainly still dream in the future somewhat, of the things i want to create. and as someone also with probable, longtime untreated ADHD, i think its natural to read homestuck and think "...how do i just MAKE like this? how can i not admire the audacity of homestuck to just EXIST when it is and was never going to be perfect, when it lives and breathes the limitations of the moment by some core conceits... and then to be that mind blowing?" in my case it helped that many of its central ideas were tailor made to be compelling to me, on top of being so proud of its idiosyncrasies. but its not just me. it would be foolish to think it was. ah fuck this isnt brief at all and got shit im putting off. okay lightning round: all that said try to have better working habits than hussie did while making hs shit sounds crazy and doesnt Need to be replicated over ones health and thats a reminder for me, u and everyone. your trollsona is a genuinely good fantroll, especially with the lusus-quirk connection. you call this video a mess but- and maybe its the hs brainrot- i don't think it is a mess i think its actually very coherent and instead YOURE just mess after the speedrun. homestuck is heavily defined by its readership, their reaction, and how they influence the comic so its pretty holistic that this video about REACTING to homestuck would also feel like homestuck. for me that also feels like home, so thank u for that. there were and/or are people who really like exploring the carapacians in particular and i think your AUnion fic is a good idea for that. for a not-hs related compliment, the start of your act2 came out to feel very similar to the opener of a super promising episode of the magnus archives. and finally, i WILL be adding several of these into my regular reactions, including the previously unsung utility of your number1 pick. thanks again and you Keep on making those things you dream about. they could be an amazingly imperfect reality no matter which moon you wake up on >;]

I'm so glad you put page 3690 in, as it was my personal favorite during my original read-through aside from Karkat's 3rd reaction to John recreating Con-Air (although #1 easily deserved its spot and is a close second for me). Your bgm choices were great and your intermissions were on point. They definitely delivered on the Karkat-adjacent "self-auspisticism" vibes. For some reason, it was reminiscent of what I've always though a Witch of Time could do; breaking the rules of time without any super major consequences as opposed to destroying the aspect entirely like a Prince. As far as the trollsona goes, I think it's nice, and I'm all for the Alternian Jurassic Park idea, although I have no idea how certain dinosaurs would work as lususes/lusi lol. Haha, thank you! I appreciate being welcomed into the Homestuck Trash family. This video has done the best of any video I've made so far, so I guess by KZread rules, I'm a Homestuck KZreadr now.

I probably should have gone to bed, but this popped into my recommends and I decide, 'ey, why not? Amazing. Well done. You broke Homestuck down to it's bare essentials while masterfully showing them off, while being hilarious and well-made, all at once. Bravo! For real, you earned a sub. Further, Dad Egbert unionizing the carapacians does sound like a great prompt that would most certainly be worthy of reading.

this video has... fortunately? unfortunately? inspired me, as yet another person with undiagnosed adhd, to attempt to read homestuck for the third time. the first two times were in high school and were frankly vaguely miserable to get through, which is why i gave up, but this time has been very fun! it's been a much needed hyperfixation in a void of (bluh) actual responsibilities, so thank you for that! (also, my #1 reaction image has got to be just. any image of the mayor. what you feel for that little slimer dude is what i feel for the mayor. i have genuinely teared up multiple times looking at that little fool) (also thank you for. the it's me boy i'm the ps5 meme i had not seen it before and it's going to be in my brain forever now, and i think i am glad about that)

I’ve been sent on a homestuck content binge due to a friend re-activating my hyperfixation by asking what the classpects of the PCs in our Sunday Rippers ttrpg game would be. That proceeded to send me on a four day character analysis binge of both the PCs from our game and homestuck characters to figure out who would be what, and by the end of it I had a full list of classpects for every pc and the benign homestuck mold colony in my brain revived and began converting braincells. So I’ve been reading fan fiction, listening to music, and genuinely considering going back and re-reading the behemoth, and now I’m here. This video is great, the vibes are perfectly home-stucky, and the Alternate-UnionVerse [or, if you wanna go classic- Unionstuck] is a great idea.

Thank you for making this vid. For me, this truly captured the essence of the webcomic. Love your metamission part! I felt the same kind of inspiration while I was still reading the comic, creating something big or making something to participate in the community. Your video is very nostalgic, reminds me of how it felt like when I was experiencing the comic. This makes me want to read it again (though it may not feel the same because of all the retcons). It's really well made, I hope you make more amazing content in the future (homestuck related or not). PS. You did mention them but not sure if you read them, the epilogues and homestuck 2. I think the epilogues give more closure for some plots that weren't explored, though they felt very fanfic-ish at times and really depressing. Homestuck 2 feels very much like fanfiction. I kind of liked it, but it got too woke and angsty for me. I kind of share the same sentiments regarding how you view relationships in the comic lol.

I plan on reading the Epilogues and maybe Homestuck 2 at some point, but I wanted to give my brain some time away from Homestuck first. This video is proof of how well that’s been going. And thank you for your kind words! I’m glad you liked the video!

I haven't commented on a youtube video in an INCREDIBLY long time, but this particular reaction has been in my recommended for about two days now? The title hilariously enough brought me all the way back to my initial experience with Homestuck - started reading in August 2011 after one of my best friends had mentioned it in passing to me after she caught up, and like yourself I binged the whole thing with only a handful of hours of sleep between those read-throughs to make up for it LOL It was about five days in total before I managed to catch up? And back then, this was at the time when Homestuck was being updated DAILY, so reaching what was quite literally 'the end of the comic' at that time felt like such an incredible accomplishment, but boy the psychic damage that did to me was something else entirely. Didn't help that the comic was at the point of introducing the proper lore of the Ancestors and Gamzee was in the midst of his You Know What (I am not ashamed to admit that he plagued my dreams for those last two days reading), but all of these reminiscent rambles aside... this was a fantastic video that invoked such feelings of familiarity from that time in my life when Homestuck was all I ever talked about with my friends who were equally obsessed at the time. I knew I was in for it when I recalled almost every reaction images' context just by the vague spoiler-free explanations you gave for some of them! It really doesn't matter how long it's been since Act 7 concluded and the curtains closed for a final time, Homestuck is always going to be much more than just a webcomic, or a groundbreaking fandom of the 2010s, or even a multimedia project... it's an Experience and out of the few videos I watched on 4/13, yours was one that tickled me pink in the way [S] John: Reunite with your loving wife and daughter does every time I rewatch it! While there's no way I could begin to explain my exact feelings for that particular flash, but please know that they're good in such a nostalgic kind of way! All that aside, I applaud you for this such a valiant effort. I wish you all the luck with future videos and further honing your work (the Alternate Unionverse too!). I give you all the standing ovations for the-lengthier-than-the-content intermissions and the Past Karkat vs. Present Karkat vs. Future Karkat vibes that were OOZING off of those exchanges. And I want to give all my thanks for creating something that put such a smile on my face this evening :) AND OF COURSE, DISMAYED SLIMER IS THE END ALL BE ALL. EXCELLENT JOB WITH NUMBER 1! P.S. Never apologize for the logistics of a trollsona. I created a handful of limebloods (and their ancestors) knowing darn well they'd all been deliberately wiped out. Did I care? NOPE. P.P.S. Sorry not sorry for the long comment. You especially deserve it
