I NEED that Curious King version of A Blade Itself! I've been a huge fan of that series since 2008 when I found it just after finishing the first three Game of Thrones books. Martin ruined me on regular fantasy and Abercrombie made sure I never went back! I still cant decide which I like better. Ive read them both several times. When The First Law finally gets a TV series it will be bigger than GoT.

You praising The Will of the Many never gets old, I still can't get over it either. I'll be re-reading it over the holidays. I just started Dreams of the Dying and I can already tell this will be my kind of book. Then, I'll read The Grace of Kings, both of which came to my attention thanks to you, just like The Will of the Many. Thanks for everything that you do, Petrik. This is a rare occurrence, but I believe I've read a first book in a series which you haven't yet, based on your mention of it in another video: Godkiller. Not necessarily one of my top first books, but I really enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts once you get to it!

Great list Petrik! Just subscribed to you after watching several of your videos. Red Rising and Blood Song made me a SFF reader. I even stopped reading Romance, and YA fantasy bc they are just so tropey and predictable to me now. I want more. I've read 8 on your list and own another 3. Your review of The Will of the Many had me at Red Rising XD and is one of my most anticipated reads for this year, as is Empire of Silence (which I will buddy read next week). I adored the HELL out of Blood Song, was confused 75% into Tower Lord, and didn't read Queen of Fire. Went back and reread BS and TL (had to hunkerdown and figure out the timeline of each POV), and finally read Queen of Fire and found I loved them all (I need more Frentis). I also did not like Mistborn when I first read it, could not get invested in the characters. Read it again, still did not like it. Read it a third time (still meh) but continued on and glad I did. The 2nd and 3rd books are so much better. I will be reading more of Sanderson Cosmere universe. Thanks for your excellent review. You and Daniel Greene are my trusted book tubers.

I've heard this too about QoF, but I read it anyway, I just love the world and characters too much. I have a feeling Anthony Ryan may have been rushed to finish the series and got caught up in the publishing wheel and dragged down. It took him 6 yrs to write BS and far less to write TL and QOF. But as you say, reading is subjective. I still enjoyed it. @@PetrikLeo

So many series! Some great popular picks and less common ones, too. Thanks for the quality video, Petrik. I've only read the first books in about 50 series, so I have fewer to pick from, but here are my favorite 15 First Books in Fantasy Series. 15. Homeland by R. A. Salvatore 14. The Bone Shard Daughter by Andrea Stewart 13. Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse 12. The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison 11. Foundryside by Robert Jackson Bennett 10. Retribution Falls by Chris Wooding 09. The Ninth Rain by Jen Williams 08. The Art of Prophecy by Wesley Chu 07. Jade City by Fonda Lee 06. The Shadow of the Gods by John Gwynne 05. Kings of the Wyld by Nicholas Eames 04. Mistborn The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson 03. The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch 02. The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson 01. A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin * Some big names are absent because those first books were just not to my taste, but they are popular for most fantasy readers. Those include The Name of the Wind, The Blade Itself, The Grace of Kings, The Fifth Season, The Poppy War and Malice (I loved the rest of The Faithful and Fallen, just not Malice). I will have to add The Will of the Many, The Dragonbone Chair, Empire of Silence and Blood Song to my TBR if they aren't on there already. Thanks again, Petrik!

Thank you, Ronald! And hey, 50 series is amazing. Thank you for your list, too. I've read everything on your list except Homeland and Goblin Emperor. Really need to get around to those two someday. Especially Salvatore's books. I think you will love The Will of the Many The Dragonbone Chair! :D

@@PetrikLeo I think you would enjoy The Art of Prophecy by Wesley Chu. It's very much like one of those older 90's/00's Chinese wuxia movies, like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon or Hero, but in book form. Some familiar character types, but an interesting prophecy premise and great setting. Solid first book in the series and I'm reading The Art of Destiny, Book 2 in The War Arts Saga, now.

Free the Darkness is a really fun first book and the whole series is over the top fun. Seven Blades in Black is an absolute favorite. A Song of Wraiths and Ruin, The Prodigal Son, The Grey Bastards, Blood of an Exile, and Of Sea and Shadow are among my favorites too. Soon Black Tongue Thief will ba a favorite first when the prequel is released 🤪 Jade and Dandelion are brilliant.
