Wear the bobble sweater, not too festive!

The thing about icelandic and the courser Norwegian/Nordic yarns is that we don't wear them next to skin. They aren't produced to be knit into next to skin garments, we knit outerwear with them, and often wear them as the 2nd or even 3rd layer of clothing. Knitting in the Nordics isn't just a neat hobby, it's a life skill, and in some cases even a survival skill. Wools inherent ability to stay warm even when wet is something the people who inhabit the arctic regions have used to our advantage to survive and thrive in the cold conditions of harsh winters. Fishermen, farmers, hunters and herders historically wore thick wool sweaters made from the icelandic lopi yarn that slightly felted over time and made a slightly water repellent garment that protects against the elements very well over time, and most still do today. Thick warm socks, mittens, scarves and hats are also a necessity when venturing outside in cold weather. Knitwear is very much a part of fashion in Scandinavia and the Nordics because we still need it to keep warm, and this is also why such a big portion of our populations know how to knit. 😊

FWIW, I finished a sweater out of Tinde about a month ago, and as I’ve worn it several times I’ve been pleasantly surprised at how much it has softened up

  • @Muminalfurinn
    @Muminalfurinn7 ай бұрын

Pro tip for softening lopi a bit. When blocking/washing, do a hair conditioner "wash" after washing. I usually wash all lopi first in a bath of wool detergent or shampoo, rise, blanch in vinegar mix (half a cup of vinegar in a full sink of water) and then I end off with a conditioner bath, rinse, lay flat for drying. To make the conditioner dissolve in the water I spread it thinly on my palms and dissolve in the water. Then you don't get clumps of conditioner in water.

I’ll remember this, I’ve been wanting to knit with lopi but am afraid of it being too itchy 😅

I buy a tallow conditioner bar I use to do this with. I just rub the bar in the water to dissolve a bit. Not that handling a cream conditioner is hard, the bar just work so well for this. You can rub until the water feels just right…

@@WOOLNEEDLESHANDSif I can add to this, I've been thinking of asking you if you have any ideas or tips on how to clean knits that have buildup. I live a pretty outdoor lifestyle in a cold part of Canada and I wear a mineral sunscreen everyday. I've noticed my store bought knits get stained by the mineral sunscreen and doesn't come out with regular washing. I've been really hesitant to make my own hats and cowls because when I have to bundle up to keep the cold Atlantic ocean air off my face, the sunscreen rubs off onto what I'm wearing. Also having 2 huskies and living in the woods means lots of dirt and mud and the bottoms of my hand knit socks have started to become discoloured. Not sure how to deal with that without wearing down or felting my socks.

Hi, Tayler. I’m reading “Knitting in Plain English,” thanks to your recommendation. As a beginning knitter (coming from crochet), I especially appreciate this book. 🥰 Timely that you mention your “time off.” This morning I realized my right index finger is painful. 😢 Too many hours, every day, of crochet and knitting! With a two week trip starting in a couple of days I could… should…. leave my yarn at home. If I were smart. If I can stand it. But, how can I?? 🫣 I’ll go through withdrawals! But, if I don’t…. Surgery? What a dilemma. 🥀🧶

One should always ease back into 'real life' after being on vacation :) I love your sweater collection - I really need a Tulip, a Magnolia Bloom (which was already in my faves on Ravelry) and of course a No Frills. I have some of the Lion Fishermens Wool in my stash, and I have been thinking of a Petite Knit vest for it, and I love the idea of pairing it with some suri... I think a whole sweater will give me limited wearability here in south TX. Thank you for the idea and of course all the inspiration :)

Love this episode. Such good information about what might make a person favor or not favor a certain sweater. Here's my take on green bobbles: It's not the bobbles, it's the color. The color is amazingly elegant, which makes the sweater seem too elevated for running errands. Wear it more. It's glorious, or save that one and make a more relaxed colorway. The cropped Felix, I think you could find or make a nice little camisole bottom half and blind stitch it up inside the cropped Felix. It could have just a bit of lace at the bottom hem, or take a dress shirt and give it some nice shirt tails and the collar stitched right to the sweater. That way you get the extra length to make it super wearable, without adding a complete layer underneath. I think this might work well because a short sleeve sweater isn't really about warmth, so when you add a layer to the body area, you have extra heat generated there, but not everywhere. That gives it a 'not quite breezy enough, but not quite warm and cozy' vibe. So maybe you'd wear it more if you leaned into it more one way or the other. Add some length with more knit, or keep it cool, by adding the length in a different fabric. Cheers!

I already ordered my second sweater, quantity of yarn for this pattern. i’m knitting it in acrylic because it’s all I had and it’s coming out a bit heavy so I wasted no time and already ordered yarn for my second Felix. Now I really want to knit a Felix pullover! For the Magnolia Bloom, I know what you mean about the bobbles. I recently knit a similar pattern that has a lace yoke and bobbles. I thought the bobbles were too big. I think they were 5-stitch bobbles so I made 3-stitch bobbles instead. I like it a lot better.

Great podcast! Have you ever found a pattern that is close to your Little Black Tee? I am too new to knitting to try to modify my own pattern. So love your Frankensweater too!

😂❤😮 I watched/listened to this while casting on, getting my NF Sweater going ... "Inga Krusiduller"/"Inge Dikkedarer", using some inherited yarn, that I stretch withvsome of "the right threads", "The Right Wool"? Hopefully it _will_ be useful. I will have to look up the " Felix" as well. Thank You for the company!

I was very surprised to hear you don't like the color of your Tulip so much! From the sweaters I've seen you wear in the podcast, this one was I always thought flattered you the most, because of the color 😁

Well it’s not that I don’t like the color. I do. It’s just that for whatever reason, I don’t reach for it. But like I sort of realize here in this video, it does look nice. And thank you for saying so Erika. ❤️

I have to laugh about the bobbles on your Magnolia Bloom. In the 80s, when I was in my 20's, every kind of knitted embellishment was the rage, so I absolutely would have gone for a coffee in this (it would actually have been a bit of a reserved look, actually, considering the muted color). You've just gotten used to minimalism!

A few things - I think the color of your Tulip sweater is beautiful! It reads purple-ish on the video. Not sure if that is how it is in real life, but I am a purple fan and I think it goes with everything! Your Magnolia Bloom is gorgeous and you should definitely wear it even just out for coffee! Also, I knit the Felix as my first sweater and the back right lace motif is offset just a bit. I think it is from where the BOR is? I'm not sure if that is what you experienced too. I am about to order yarn for my own Felix #2 so we will see if it is me or the pattern, but I think it is from the BOR.

I like a crew neck or mock turtle neck more than other necklines for sweaters. I have a few with bigger necklines but I really have trouble styling them. I am really just now figuring out my sweater length, arm style etc. My favorite sweater currently is my Harlow by Caidree. I just bound off the Lyons sweater by Petite Knit and the Versal by Ailbíona McLochlainn and I have to block them but I'm really excited to wear them. I don't really have an issue with coarse, rustic yarns as long as I am not hot. If I'm hot, they are all scratchy

You’re definitely overthinking the bobbles. Wear it. I made this sweater after seeing yours. I don’t wear mine enough though because the yarn I used is a bit scratchy. Not bad so maybe I just need to wash it again.

Tayler, I love your channel. You are so inspiring! I am planning to knit the Magnolia Bloom cardigan. The pattern calls for a DK weight yarn with two strands of mohair, but you knit your pullover with just one strand of suri, is that right?

I made the Felix pullover after watching one of your videos a year ago and I wish I had known because my armpit is way too deep. So I only wear it around the house really but it is so comfortable and I love it. I also made it with Superwash Cascade 220 and it stretches like crazy I may make another one very soon but right now I have three sweaters on the needles and need to get them done and they're going to take a while to finish one is the stripe pipe the other one is the Lumme, pull over by sorry nordlund and then I have one by petite that's on the needles but it's a larger needle I think a nine us which should be really quick but I got to the short row shaping and I thought or no the shoulder shaping and I thought I just didn't feel like doing it and then I just cast on for another sweater then I wanted to do a color work sweater so I can't stand for that sweater and I had to rip it back like four times in different spots and now I'm finally moving through it but I already have regrets with that because she says to start with a US 8 needle for your color work and then drop to us 7 for the main color in the body and I should have stayed with the us 8 needle I'm hoping that it'll block just fine but I also bought Fisherman's wool because of you and the sweater I'm working on is that white Tweed Fisherman's wool and I can't wait to get back to it especially after seeing your sweater finished it's just so pretty I can't wait to wear it . You have great influence over my choices. Ha.😂 I'm so glad you're back I missed you.❤

On the tulip sweater you’re feeling off about the color - I can’t quite tell on the video, but it looks like a cool plum/brown, as opposed to a warm one, and I always get warm tone vibes from you and your color preferences… so while it does have brown undertones if they’re cool ones then that could be what’s throwing you/why you can’t put a finger on it! Again; that’s just my phone’s color on the screen though, so I might be wrong.

I bet there are a lot of similar comments to the one I’m going to make, which is: wool is naturally self cleaning. That’s just one of the reasons why it’s so fabulous. I hope you’re smelling that wonderful lanolin scent-oh how I love that. Ok! I’ve heard a lot about Felix and think I need that pattern. Thanks!!xx

Since I have learned about wool naturally self cleaning, I rarely wash mine. How often do you think it's actually necessary though? Sometimes I wonder if I should wash before storing in the off seasons, however, I have also not washed them then, when they don't smell and haven't been pressed against my pits. I come from an "everything must be very clean, aka washed" background, so it still "feels" wrong to not wash them.

@@deeanndavis1256 I think it’s important to clean any spills (for instance food spills attract moths!), but all the Shetland wool artists and Arne and Carlos etc. say to leave your hand knits outside for a good airing before packing them away for the winter. I think common sense prevails - if it doesn’t smell or feel clean, then take action. There’s a lot of information online about this.

@@catnapper3923 all of that makes sense, thank you! I do spray my garments with alcohol and air them outside when I feel they need it. I haven't had any problems with moths, but carpet beetle larvae on the other hand, has been a real struggle since moving into an old house. Now my wool needs stored in plastic over the winter (I still check for pests/mold). They do so much damage so quickly!

Most wool is thoroughly stripped of it's lanolin in the process to turn it into yarn. Lanolin is produced by the sheep, much like how we produce skin oils. Therefore, once removed from the sheep it will not create lanolin. So, you would need to use a special wool wash with lanolin in it in order to have any lanolin in your wool garments. Also, wool actually holds onto bacteria. There is a bit of misunderstanding of science going around where a wool sweater was swabbed and the swab produced less bacteria than a swab of a cotton sweater so people thought the wool was resistant to bacteria. BUT the reason for that is not because the wool was antibacterial. Quite the opposite. The wool held onto the bacteria so it didn't transfer to the swab. Saying this, I don't wash my sweaters a lot, whether they're cotton or wool or whatever. I wear a tshirt underneath to keep my human fluids off of them so usually I just take them off and air them out and then put them right back in the closet. I'm not worried about bacteria, though, just my human stank scent lol.
