I Ran 4 miles EVERY 4 HOURS for 2 DAYS - The Goggins Challenge 4x4x48 + Training Tips

Спорт

I ran the David Goggins Challenge 4x4x48 - running 4 miles EVERY 4 HOURS for 2 DAYS (48 miles). As an experienced ultra runner, I want to provide training tips to help you succeed in this Goggins Challenge 4x4x48 and help you increase your mental toughness and discipline.
Curious about the trail running gear I use and recommend: check out this link
linktr.ee/runningwithsimon
First proposed in 2020 as everyone was getting cabin fever. David Goggins proposed people to go out and run 4 miles, every 4 hours, for 48 hours. It was a tool to help build mental toughness, resilience, and discipline. Although there are no fixed date, it's usually done in March.
The Goggins Challenge, or the 4x4x48 Challenge, is at its core both a mental toughness, and long distance running challenge. It's a tool to help you develop mental toughness and discipline. Something that will help you beyond running itself. To help you not get complacent and lazy.
Physically, if you run ultra marathon like I do, this isn't that difficult. I would say - in terms of fitness - it's similar to running 50k. But at the same time, you need strong mental toughness to keep going during the challenge - and if I had to choose, I would prefer running 50 miles straight and get my night.
I had done it in the past and felt now was a good to repeat, as I felt a bit rusty. I still race 100 miles ultra marathon every month, so I know I have the fitness. But my training hasn't been ideal for a while. I also figured it'd be a great opportunity to share how I would approach myself such challenge to help you be successful.
Next is Antelope Canyon 100 miles on March 9-10. Nora will also be racing the 50 miles - stay tuned!
As always, thanks for watching!

    In terms of my tips to share: 1 - Plan every route and, if like me you have limited overnight running experience, practise 1 or 2 night runs each week for 3 weeks. Here is mostly unlit farm tracks, so getting acquainted with the terrain, darkness, and wild animals [boars mostly] was a big confidence boost during the actual challenge as a solo runner. 2 - Beware of cumulative elevation gain and pace accordingly. My total gain was 1,225 m (4,019 ft) over 111 km (69 mi), so I took it slow and steady until the last 2 runs (total: 13h 56m). 3 - Prepare all food in advance and test it out, since eating after a run, then taking a 2-hr nap, and then immediately running after waking up is unlike normality or even my usual 40-50k distance running. Fuelling with on/off sleeping was the biggest physical challenge. 4 - Have 3 sets of all possible clothing you could need and shoes all out ready since you may not be able to dry stuff sufficiently between runs. Did mine in December and had considerable temp variation, plus it rained for 6 of my 13 runs (incl. the "extra"), and for 3 runs it was torrential. Weather can change very quickly (it does here), but the run times are fixed once you start; again, unlike "normal". 5 - I set out my large training schedule whiteboard to show each run stage, so I could "tick them off" - good for motivation, but also kept me grounded as I kept forgetting which number I was up to when cold and wet. 6 - I publicised my challenge ahead on my personal social media, incl. a world time chart for each run, and then asked for the odd support message. I received 1-2 messages for all but 1 run, which really helped, esp. at 4am when it was pitch black, howling wind, and torrential rain, lol.

Really looking forward to do the „whole“ one someday. I think everybody can adjust it to their training level (like you did with the extra one). You‘re absolutely right about the injury risk. The rest of the challenge is all about sleep deprivation, mental toughness/discipline and being prepared and organized 💪 I felt like after a long rave weekend in my twenties 🤣

    I did it 2 days ago except I did 7km instead of the 4 miles so that I covered 2 full marathons. It was a stupid thing for me to do as I’m prone to injury and it doesn’t really help improve your physical performance. It does however challenge your mental fortitude and it gives me some confidence for my first ultra in a months time. As a training program, I feel that I would’ve been better to Zone-2 run a half marathon everyday for 5 days.

    Yeah I remember when I did mine. In matter fact, I think I did a 50 miler like a 12 hour race like a month or so before I found out this 48 miles throughout the two days was a lot harder and it was a lot harder in my family you know cause my wife was worried about me so she asked me to we have a treadmill she said go on the treadmill in the middle of the night and so I did that and got through it and it, I think I grew you know through it. I’ll have to do it again sometime good man enjoyed it.

    My wife was also worried. But mostly worried I'd miss a night run and originally wanted me to not go in a different room for the 11 and 3am. I vetoed that however - didn't want to wake her up. (Also I know it's a random thing to say but...I should really get a treadmill...)

  • @marathoner_Ali
    @marathoner_Ali4 ай бұрын

    Did a version of this back in December. In mine I did 100 km split equally over the 12 runs to add a bit more challenge, then topped that up to 111 km in a 13th as still within the 48 hrs. The midnight and 4am runs were certainly a bit tough in the pitch dark, and pissing with rain, but that made the 8am run in the first light quite magical. I didn't find it that much of a physical challenge (the 48 hrs felt no more than a single marathon), but the mental game was fun, especially during the very wet night runs when the family was snoring in their warm beds :) Considering doing a 72-hour version next winter.

    I originally went for 7k, but 84k was then too close to 100k not to be done, lol (and then 111k with #13). Double certainly sounds fun, but as you say timing is important for challenges like these which are optional after all.
