I kinda hate when new trends or methods pop up cause it confuses people who are still learning their hair. I’m starting to think oils and butters aren’t the issue... product build up is. What’s the coincidence that people who use heavy butters and oils are suddenly feeling their accept moisture after clarifying their hair and reduce/adapt the way they use products 🤔 Oils and butters don’t need to be slathered on, honestly your hair shouldn’t even feel greasy after applying it either. A few drops per section is all you need with a oil that work for the occasion. And a butter on the most vulnerable parts of your hair like your ends and you need just a smidge of that butter. You have to be mindful of what you used and how you used it and what type of cleanser you need to follow up with. Wash day is just a reset of the slate and reapplying mindfully. There’s no need to throw out your products, just cut back and explore ingredients cause oils and butters are not the only that can cause build up, actually no one ingredient can.

It’s really not a new trend/method it’s basic hair care I get how it can be confusing though after doing all the things KZread and naturals taught. Plus it’s not necessary to use raw oils and butters at all if you cleanse condition and style properly. But to each it’s own.

Ive gone without Oils and such for over a year and the length that I've retained is ridiculous. I was so shocked when I saw my hair straightened. Ive been following some stylists on twitter who made it all click. Washing, conditioning and styling my hair weekly has really changed the health of my hair and scalp. Shampoo (moisturizing or clarifying), conditioner and a gel or foam wrap. That is all. Thats all your hair needs. Even when you go to the salon, they arent pulling out mielle or shea moisture. That stuff isnt doing much of anything for the hair. Sealing the hair with oil, is doing more harm than good. It isnt a new trend or a method, its science thats always been available. Oil is an occlusive thats hydrophobic, it repels water. Be open to new ways of treating your hair. Let go of the notion that our hair is hard to care for, it is not. Let go of the idea that black hair doesnt grow, it does. It always is. Focus more on length retention. Washing your hair does NOT have to take all day. Im done with washing my hair (twice or 3 times) and conditioning in under 15 minutes. What we were taught about our hair is a lie and these natural hair care companies made money off of that.

I live in South Fla. I work out in the sun 3 times per week in West Palm Beach, Fl where it’s 90 degrees on the regular. My hair was dry as hell before I found the professional advice of Black Girl Curls. I started the detox after reading their e-book and found a professional in my area (Hydrabar Salon) to partner with. My hair has never been so hydrated and just like the woman in this video.....cleanse, condition and style w/ high quality products allows me 8 days with a gorgeous wng without having to refresh even with working out in the heat! I will never go back to using raw oils and butters/DIY concoctions. I use salon quality products (some have oils...just not in the first 5 ingredients and well formulated w/in the products). My hair is my own hair receipt now! The two professional stylists gained my trust because their IG pages are full of happy women with gorgeous hair and dope curly cuts in addition to their stylist directory....not to mention their hair!

Did the Max Hydration Method and I was amazed how even though I was using so little product my hair was the most HYDRATED I’ve even felt it. I don’t do the max method consistently. For some people, even oils and butters cause major issues. I am one of those folks who after decades finally realized I have high sebum production and the addition of oils and butters was making my issues worse. I too a minimalist when it comes to product for my hair as that is what is best for it. Yes, one ingredient can cause build up. I have not used oils, butters, gels, leave-ins etc for the last 7 years and my hair has never been soft like it is now. I have locs and what sealed (pun intended) it for me is that the ends were a bit hard and the locs were scratchy when I was using oils. I'm wondering why I ever used oils, butters etc. Everyone's hair is different and thus different things, including natural ingredients work different for everyone. So it is imperative to get to know one's OWN hair and use what works for YOU, even if that means NO products, including NO natural products. It is great for folks to share what works for them as you might find out about something that might work for you. That is how I got the inspiration to stop using oils, butters and products. However, that comes secondary to getting to know your own hair.

Less is definitely more when it comes to natural hair. Shampoo, conditioner, styler, done. Me personally, I’ve actually not used any products except for aloe leaf two different times on my scalp for the past 2 years. No shampoo, no conditioner, no butter, no oil, no gel, no nothing- just water. I put a shower filter on my shower for washing and fill up a spray bottle full of distilled water for styling. I very regularly stritch and massage my scalp and wash my hair with only water and then t-shirt/turbi dry and blow dry. I only wear my hair in mini twists and twist outs and do a slight trim at least every 2 months. By doing just these very simple things, my hair has grown from bras strap length to almost tailbone length. It’s also very manageable, strong and defined, and my twistouts hold up very well even in humidity. And I have very dense 4b hair. Natural hair can be so easy it’s ridiculous.

@Flower Girle, great testimony! How long have you had this regimen? And, how often do you retwist? And, how long do you leave your hair loose in the twist out? So many questions! 😁 Also, why distilled water to style? I’ve been working to get beyond BSL and get to waist/tailbone. Do you ever do larger, chunkier twists? Thank you for any further insights you can provide.

  • @flowergirle9250

@ Tiffany W Hello, I’ve had this regimen for almost 2.5 years now. I am currently at tailbone length from BSL 2.5 years ago. I used filtered water to decrease mineral deposits and chlorine and sediment on my hair. Just a simple filter I got from Lowe’s and replace every 6 months. I use distilled water b/c it’s more pure, more clean, and very soft/mineral-free- plus the ph is naturally more acidic than tap water or water with minerals added. I also don’t allow my hair to really air-dry. I dry in a T-shirt, then use low heat and high speed to blow 90-95% dry. This makes sure I’m not allowing my hair to mildew. I also use satin pillowcases and/or satin braid bonnet for bed to preserve styles/natural oil from my scalp. I have a braid bonnet for each day of the week. I keep mild and simply formulated clarifying shampoo, reg shampoo and rinse-out conditioner on stand-by in case I have a situation where I feel my hair needs suds. And that’s pretty much it. Not a whole lot to it, but it’s hard core minimalistic, not a lot of styling or experimentation and something everyone won’t like. But it works for me and had helped me maintain strength and elasticity in my hair better than any deep conditioner or oil or products ever have. I have coarse, smooth surface low porosity hair by the way.

What do you use to moisturize your hair then? Can I use spray leave ins that are oil free? I only do wash and gos and my hair is fine using leave ins with oils in it and my hair comes out really defined. But there are some parts of my hair (my crown only) that are super dry and break off and I'm wondering if its because of those oils. I shampoo weekly and use a sulphate shampoo every other week, I always deep condition when I wash my hair and I don't use pure oils on my hair. My hair regardless grows like a weed ( think I'm just genetically lucky), but I want to see if my crown area can become moisturized if I stop using leave in with oils.

Hey! I just wanted to share information that I’ve learned from the stylists. Moisture is water. The moisturizing/hydration process occurs during shampoo and conditioner. The usage of raw oils and butters can perpetuate dehydrated hair, which leads to breakage. However, there are other things that are part of your regimen that can be causing issues in your crown area. Leave-ins are a styler with no hold, so stylists typically don’t suggest it for WnGs. Rather, they suggest gels because they give hold and have ingredients that provide moisture retention that you’re looking for. I would suggest looking into @iamblackgirlcurls on Instagram and their online resource SeeSomeCurls. It truly educated me not only the products they suggest, but also the why and how’s to using them. Plus, it educate you on the fundamentals of hair that clear up many misconceptions you may have.

I deep condition every week and barely manipulate my hair, my wash and gos are great I've learned what works for my hair but I was just wondering why I have breakage near my crown. My boyfriends mom is a hair stylist and I asked her about it and she didn't really say anything, I'm wondering if its from sun damage since the sun directly hit that spot in my head all the time.

@@kyonaharris8239 I’m glad you were able to find a regimen that you’re content with. I know you mentioned that you’ve had breakage your whole life. Breakage can be of the cause of many things. Do you wear tight braids, buns, or ponytails regularly? That tension can lead to breakage. Do you get regular professional trims? Ends can naturally split, and if you don’t keep up with it, they can get worse. Do you wear protective styles back to back? Do you use a lot of heat? There’s a lot that has to be checked to get to the root of the problem. Although, the products you use can play a role to it, your overall regimen can also do it as well. Try to partner with a hairstylist who can give you more information than what your boyfriend’s mom was able to. I don’t think the sun is a true factor to that. I don’t believe using a leave-in with oils is the problem. Now, stylists suggest not having oils in the first 5 ingredients. It’s fine if they’re towards the end of the list. If your leave in consist of a lot of oils, especially in the first 5 ingredients, it’s likely of poor quality. Poor quality products can be bad on the hair. Also to touch up on the deep conditioner thing, as it’s seen that you use it weekly. It’s not preventative, it’s restorative. It’s not meant to use weekly, being that it’s only needed to treat a hair problem. And if there’s already breakage in that area, deep conditioner can’t revive that. Be aware that some deep conditioners contain protein. Too much protein, especially on healthy hair, can make the hair brittle and break off.

  • @UsonePrecious

    @UsonePrecious

    3 жыл бұрын

Hi Adwoa, the thing about the detox is that it is alot about accepting your hair the way it is and the soft hair is unrealistic for a lot if not most of us. If your hair is naturally coarse, it won't be soft or silky and that's perfectly ok. I don't have a silky surface texture from what I know, however, I will say that my hair does feel good and better to me since doing this. Idk about the less breakage question because I think having hydrated hair like is practiced in the detox would help with preventing breakage, but breakage might likely mean a cut with a stylist is needed. I don't feel like my hair breaks off abnormally and I do feel like my hair is healthy.

I've seen others claim that this only works for low porosity, but the detox and limiting and not using oils and betters was created and is supported by cosmetologists who specialize in afro hair. They've worked with hundreds of heads of clients, as in they see all different kinds of porosities on a daily basis. They have their receipts, and not one of them has said they achieve results by LOC/LCO, oiling, any other oil using/sealing method, or using thick oil and butter based products that just coat. @@yardleywood7585 There's a lot of followup questions to ask the trichologists about oils and I would also very much ask a dermatologist. I have never heard of a dermatologist prescribing oils to treat a scalp. In fact, I've heard some say not to oil the scalp at all. That doesn't mean that prescribing oil has never happened. I would just ask. Also I would look into the reason why I myself would feel like I NEED an oil, not so much if it's okay to use. If nothing is wrong with my scalp, then why can't I let my natural sebum just do it's work and let my scalp be? l'm assuming that we both are talking about these professionals with the understanding that neither are hair experts, and they work with the skin so the oils and butters question would be to ask them if they should be used on the scalp. I personally would follow whoever has the evidence to show. If I have, I am sorry for referring to gurus in such a way. I do no longer see much value in gurus since most are just pushing products and have led us to believe our hair is harder than it actually is and don't work on other heads of hair, but they were there for us when professionals weren't exactly. So I understand looking up to them. Aisha and Aeleise are not gurus they are licensed cosmetologists who've trained and specialize in black hair, and do hair for a living. That is not a guru. They have to monetize because that's their career they went to school for. Not everything they give can be free, but even so they give plenty of free advice to the public. When you say I'm just "parroting" I do take slight offense to that. My experience is my experience. That is 100% me. The stylists are the ones who do the research. The research part is not my expertise. I just try it on myself. I wouldn't have said positive things about it if I didn't like my experience. I relay what they have said, and just my experience. @@godiseverything1482 It depends. It's not so much about using less products. It's mostly about simplifying your routine, which does lead to using less products, and learning what your actual hair is like. It's mostly about unlearning what we thought we knew about our hair and learning what it is actually like. We've been conditioned to have a million and one steps in our hair routine and have oils and butters make up a large part of it, but with the detox you're supposed to cut out coconut oil, shea butter, castor oil and eco styler (products many of use gravitate towards) from the first five ingredients of your products and from using them raw and switch to a simple three step routine, which is shampoo, condition, then style your hair. No LOC/LCO, prepoo, deep condition for long periods, hot oiling, oiling the scalp, "moisturizing" mid week, or anything else that is outside of cleaning, conditioning, and using a styler. In short, the detox isn't really a physical hair detox, but a detox of the mind. Does that help? Your hair is obviously low porosity which means you don't have to heavily rely on oils and butters to keep the hair sealed, because the tightly closed cuticles are doing that job already (cuticles are like moisture gatekeepers). That's why you also get quick buildup, the hair absorbs less moisture or product due to the tight cuticles (gate closed). High porosity hair (like my hair) has raised cuticles and are in high need of lipids as it's lacking that. With low-po hair the focus should be on getting moisture IN, which is harder because the hair won't absorb water fast; but once it's in it will easily stay there (closed gate equals hard to get in and hard to get out). High-po hair (non-stop open gate: easy in, easy out) absorbs moisture like a thirsty camel, so the issue is not getting moisture IN but the real issue is to KEEP it there: and that's where oils and butters come in (closing the gate). My high-po hair would be like straw without oils/butters. Your hair would probably just need humectants (glycerin is a humectant). Oils will add to the hydrophobicity of your hair and make the hydration process harder. From time to time to maintain elasticity you could use an oil with a low molecular weight ( such as Caprylic Triglyceride) which will absorb faster & easier than heavier oils because of the smaller molecules and has no greasy residue. Gel (pure gel, no custards with oil) could actually work great for low-po hair as it's just moisture and not oil, and since it stays on the hair for a while the hair will have enough time to gradually absorb the moisture. Just make sure that gels don't contain alcohol.

My favorite oil to use in fact was the one that stylist most hated and a very heavy one, castor oil. I LCOd with it all the time. I never felt like my hair was dried out from it or like there was a problem with it in my hair. In fact I thought my hair was moisturized, which appears to go against what people say about low porosity hair not liking oils...I'm just saying this to relay that I am not on a no oil and simplicity journey because I've had bad relationships with oil in the past. Sometimes there is better for a person and they themselves don't know that.

@@UsonePrecious I would have to respectfully disagree; this theory is one that is bearing fruit for certain types of hair, and I have found that porosity is a huge part of how my hair behaves and fares from wash day onward. It is a bit too sweeping of a statement to say that oils are detrimental to us, when there are people, also cosmetologists, also with receipts, who can attest to the benefits of using oils and/or butters. Heads of textured hair vary widely. I appreciate the different approach and perspective, but I fear that people tend to make pronouncements dismissing things that work for others based on a sample size of one, or on a subset of people with textured hair. Black girl curls are also businesswomen who are selling products, a philosophy and approach, and a pricey hair care course, if I'm not mistaken. This preaching of a new, alternative, anti oil and butter hair gospel is also an avenue for marketing products of a different kind, so they aren't entirely above the fray. Again, thank you for sharing your experience. High porosity, something that isn't part of your particular experience, can't be dismissed as unimportant to hair care or overblown. My high porosity hair, when not sealed, crackles and breaks and I can't undo that damage once it's done. By all means give alternatives, but do recognize that there is more to this debate than citing some cosmetologists who have receipts. Professional trichologists - and I work with one, who is Black and has textured hair, and who asked me to mail her a strand of my hair to analyze the porosity and density before recommending a regimen - cite numerous scientific studies on porosity as a main factor in product selection. This corrective risks going too far in the other direction, discarding sound hair science.

But also people use in their hair what’s available to them. It doesn’t mean that they used it to make their hair grow or that it’s something that’s actually good for you. Often times cultures with long hair that I’ve noticed share a common denominator. Which is they leave their hair alone. I’ve never seen any culture claim their hair grew because of what they put on it. Most of the time things like using These “natural” clays, powders, waters, etc is due to something significant in a culture like religion and not for hair growth/health. Lastly we forget too often that hair growth rate is 100% based on genetics. Nothing is going to make you “grow” hair. If these women had hair that grew long with butter, they’re hair would have likely grown if they slapped regular dirt on it or pink moisturizer. Also long hair doesn’t equate to healthy hair. Regardless unless you’re clarifying your hair every week. The thick oils and butters still build up.
