I Quit Drinking Alcohol for 5 Years - Here's What Happened
5 years and 1 day ago I was headed for disaster. 5 years ago I decided to change my trajectory. I quit drinking alcohol.
By deciding to eliminate alcohol from my life a cascade of doors opened up for me. As I stepped through those doors the lie I was living began to fade. And while things didn’t get better immediately, incrementally I began to gain control over my behaviors again. And slowly re-created a relationship with an old friend; myself.
The last five years have unfolded into the best parts of my life. A new beginning with a stable metal health, new and stable relationships, meaningful work and financial freedoms are just a few of the things I blame on leaving alcohol behind. In short, I became more successful at being me.
Here is a walk along my path.

I quit five years ago and haven’t touched it since. When I read this comment I thought what a very good way to put it. Outstanding comment!
4 years sober. I also became friendless. no one I used to hang out with have the same rhythm of life i do now. No longer got invitations. My 'friends' are too busy drinking and curing their hang overs together. They sort of repell my energy. I have to much of it for them. No one wants to exercise with me, they go together, when i see them they are friendly, but they cary on on their path. That was the most dificult part. Having to deal with it alone. I actually drank because i have to self centered parents, i could drink all weekend long since I was 15 and get 'away' with it. Medical conditions forced me at age 21 to stop drinking. I turned to marijuana for a bit but I took exercise (cardio-Cycling) Too seriously and the smoke was (I think) to slow me down. Sober completely now and I struggle everyday to stay off substances. I drink coffee when I can anxious and exercise, listen to music. My self, everything on my own. No one cares about well being than yourself. Dont expect help, you probobly wont get it. Its on you.

Thank you so much. I've been fighting this battle for a few years now. Alcohol and cocaine. I've realized that it always starts with alcohol. I drink, lose my inhibitions and then move onto the cocaine. I've lost my job, my wife, my home, and my joy. And I've lost all respect for myself. Have had a gun against my head several times, wanting to end the misery.. You've given me hope again. I will succeed!

The failures in my life caused by drugs and alcohol made me put a knife to my wrist many times. I couldn't do it and I'm happy to hear that you didn't do it.
Life without alcohol is my story too. I quit drinking and smoking at the age of 23 . I was about to lose my marriage and my 6 month old baby girl. After a night of drinking all night till the morning with the boys I came home before sunrise and walked up to my daughters crib and looked at my baby girl wondering what kind of a father I was. As I looked at her a still calm voice spoke to my heart and said if I was willing to follow him and surrender my life to him he would guide me through a life of sobriety. That was 43 years ago. I wonder what my life would have been like if I continued to drink, only God knows and he didn't allow me to experience that..... Love life and stay sober my friend good luck to you God bless.

Thank you from Hong Kong. I just hit my 2000 days sobriety last week. For those who want to quit here, please have more chocolate or candies or spicy food, coz its taste doesn't fit with having alcohol and could refrain your craze for it. Bob, Thank you for reaching out and sharing some of your path. It took me quitting three times to make it stick. The hardest thing I had to get over was the guilt associated with the failure. Keep your chin up and if I was to make any recommendation it is to find the relationships that support you in what YOU want...I started by paying my Psycologist...the rest that followed have been far less expensive. Although that was one of the best investments I continue to make. Be well my friend and even when it seems lonely know that there are many walking the path with you. Sincerely, Jacob Urban

I'm 64, 6 weeks sober, and I'm undecided about how serious I really am about it all. I quit smoking about 25 yrs ago, and it was the best thing I ever did, but somehow I don't feel quite as motivated about alcohol. But that's ok. I'm not going to put any pressure on myself, because it will just create stress and is doomed to failure. It's about being able to understand what the relationship is all about and being able to say goodbye, rather than standing with your back to a door with a howling trying to blow it down. Anyway, well done, good for you.

Thank you very much! Appreciate you watching and sharing some of your story. I like to remind folks that the path to finding one's self is not linear. I quit drinking three times before I could make it stick. Every time I quit previously I "thought" I had control of the addict in me. I m one month sober. Took my Hindu vows and wore the sacred thread. Cravings r still there, but when you make a commitment like this, it becomes much easier. A big obstacle in getting sober is the feeling of "what will i say when my friends call me out for a drink". I tell them that i have taken my vows. First they laugh, but then it gets easier to explain it to them. Now nobody asks me out. And i have begun to see myself as a new me.

@@jhoutdoorleadershipinstitute There are a lot of subtle truths in your chat. I quit drinking not long ago for a minor health reason. My blood pressure had been creeping up and I decided to quit drinking to see if I could stay off blood pressure medicine. I didn't think I had a drinking problem or that it was f'ing up my life at all. A while after I quit and stopped having hangovers (that I didn't realize were actual hangovers) I became much more productive in my job that I now enjoy much much more than I did before. My relationships at work got better even though I work at a place where social drinking (hard social drinking) is well tolerated and accepted . I went on the first vacation in my life were I did not drink any alcohol and not only do I remember every minute of it I genuinely had a great time and didn't spend a thousand bucks on booze during the vacation. Now when I look back at the last several years its easy to see that I was on a self destructive path and although up to that point it had been a slow descent it had been accelerating for a couple of years and I didn't see it or I didn't want to admit it. When I originally quit I thought to myself that the quitting was only temporary and I could manage to moderate my drinking after my blood pressure resolved itself but now that I have had the chance to take an honest look back at my self on alcohol and what the real costs of a bourbon or two (usually ten) was I have no desire to drink at all. It turns out social situations are more fun sober, even if my friends aren't. Like I said, great video.

I was sober for a full ten years until I really dealt with the fact that the way I used to drink alcohol was truly but a "symptom" (just as very briefly described in the book Alcoholics Anonymous with no real elaboration) and dealt with the causes and conditions of my alcoholic drinking. I've been enjoying my bourbon, wine, and beer now for the past couple years. Glad I can do it, drinking for relaxation alone or socially. Responsibility vs. sobriety, I definitely choose responsibility.

What an amazing story. I'm 43 and realised I need to quit drinking. Or at least cut back siginificantly (but I know quitting completely would be best). I've been drinking daily for the past... 20 years? Not getting super drunk but definitely self medicating. I don't have any terrible rock bottom events happen to me but my life is not where I want it to be at all. I'm pretty comfortable (which is why it's so hard to change), but I'm also directionless, single, childless and these are all things I would like to change. Life feels too meaningless and empty right now. I've been exploring spirituality a lot lately. Also exercising more. I feel like my life could be so different, so much better. But I have a problem with self discipline, consistency and follow through. I feel like I'm stuck, spinning my wheels and life is passing me by ever more rapidly. Stories like this feel so inspiring, but also daunting. The time it takes to get through it all, the pain we have to face, the struggle. I know it's better than hiding in a bottle though. I will keep trying.

HI mate I keep coming back to this video, it's very moving and inspirational. Last year I spent an inheritance (50k) in the space of 4 days during a blackout bender. I spent it on hotel rooms, escorts and substances. I do not remember spending this money and have no idea how I did spend it in the space of 4 days... How do I move on from this? I ask as you said you were 250k in debt and got out of it. Would really appreciate any advice on how to look forward and not back because when I dwell on it too long vodka is the only solution. Im 12 days into sobriety but this time I really feel like im done with it all.

@Fartman3000 Thank you for reaching out and sharing some of your story. It does sound like you are done with it this time my friend. It took me quitting alcohol three times before it stuck. Only after I had quit the third time I started to deal with some other addiction behaviors. I have similar stories of excess and blowing all my money. All you can do is focus on today and not worry about tomorrow. Know that you will meet others on this journey. And soon you will find yourself...and that is all one needs. You are strong, you are worthy and you are loved. You have this. Be all my friend.

@@jhoutdoorleadershipinstitute Thank you for these words! I've figured I can have that money saved in two years if I keep my head down, and if during that time I stay sober then losing that 50k could be the best thing that ever happened to me. Peace and may you also stay strong!

@@Fartman3000 Exactly! Good and bad are differing perspectives of the same event. This is the constant polarity of experience. The trick is making gold from a pile of plastic. It is all in how you see it. I would never give up the experiences of parties and blowing money. They made me into who I am today and never would have found value otherwise. You gotta live to learn. Just keep forgiving yourself for living more than most. One step at a time...🙇♀🙏

i've been r#ped, i've overdosed, been beaten and robbed multiple times all thanks too alchohol. It sickens me to think it took me so long to get sober. I know most can handle their drink but i had to drink to excess every time like some sort of addiction. I can't stress to kids enough to stay away from drink, drugs and the wrong women.

I feel like while I’m really proud of you you probably should have cut out that coke first. Or at the same time as getting rid of the booze. Of course your sleep improved, you quit doing the booger sugar bro. You’re doing great but when you said you quit drinking I had no idea that a couple minutes in you were going to say that you kept doing coke for a year after that. Sorry if this isn’t a completely positive comment. I hope you’re still on the wagon man. Good luck to you.

Appreciate the observation. Keep in mind that we all do things differently. I never intended on quitting drinking. Rather I wanted to prove to a friend that getting your life under control was easy. What I found was that my life was out of control. Sobriety isn't a linear process. It take turns, failures, attempts and a perspective shift. Quitting drinking showed me I had issues. A lot of issues I would have never dealt with unless I started somewhere. We have no idea where the path may lead...only choices when we are served them. Once I realized I was an addict I realized I had other problems. Then decided to deal with them. Hence...we all start somewhere and that is different for everyone. Be well.

Yes...I never intended to say off booze. I was doing it to help a friend.I was planning on having a drink on day 366 after getting him through the year. In the process I found out I was an addict that had emotional problems. The path isn't linear. Rather one of slowly awakening to the realities of my own disease.

Alcohol, drugs, rehab, phsychotherapy, bottomless pit of money most alcoholics don’t have
Seemed impossible, but it’s been over 7 months and I don’t crave a drop of alcohol, the KEY difference was that I didn’t suffer withdrawal, not even within the first 30 days after I quit. No need for AA meetings or meds either, I just go’ogled Steffon Barkload’s Quit Drinking Forever, and I just don’t even think about it anymore

So many programs out there that promise you'll quit drinking from one day to the other and feel great for the rest of your life. I could not agree more with you! Most folks in the know that there is no "treatment" for this "disease". Because treatment doesn't work for something that is not a disease. Rather a choice. Choosing to want something different is a powerful antidote. Strong work my friend. A privilege to meet you on this journey. Be well.

Alcohol has had a place in life since biblical times. The problem is the abuse of it. Lifes pressures make us vulnerable to abuse because it’s legal. In Europe they enjoy a wine with food not binge drink like in uk
