This is awesome! I've lived in Atlantic Canada my entire life and I had no idea you could do this. I remember as a kid my sisters digging and digging and digging for clams, but didn't know all you had to do was pour some salt water in the holes. From what I've read, this isn't just sea water. It's water with added table salt, and since mollusks are sensitive to salinity, that's why they rise to the surface. I am totally trying this next year at the beach.

To tell you the truth, it's easier to just dig them out. When you salt them, they open up and get sand inside, which can make for some rough eating depending on what you're cooking.

wolffriendinus saltwater solution and seawater is different thing, seawater has a specific salinity which fit for sea critter , salt solution is dry salt which mixed with water, high salinity and concentrate solution can hurt or even kill the animal

I think the first one might be Saxidomus purpuratus, because it looks SO much like the related butter clam of the Pacific Northwest of North America. I know that when you put just a half teaspoon of chlorine in to a half gallon of water and squirt it into the cracks of the large rocks at low tide, small octopus , octopuses ? octopie ? scurry out. I've seen folks get quite a catch this way. Maybe this is the same thing? Also ive heard of scuba divers doing this to catch octo's by using a squirt bottle with force even underwater alls it takes is just a hint of chlorine. Now I'm saying that I've" seen" and" heard" not" condone" and" done"!

it may be toxic to them because table salt isnt always from the sea. They arent coming out thinking its high tide, theyre spitting out whats toxic to them. I clam-dig myself and have never seen them spitting just sitting in low tide getting wet from sea water

Lilliana Hogg I'm not really sure. There are certain laws and regulations on how to harvest clams. But imo this seems to be the easiest and successful way. It sure is better than taking a digging utensil and tearing up the beach.

I’ll bet living in those holes is dark and clammy. It was very nice he got them together for a selfie. They probably usually go through life without any idea who lives next door. This was a landmark video in the socialization of the clam, not that anybody gives a damn. But think of the joy this video will provide for generations of clams to be, clustered in the sand for all to see. Nope, that's a misconception. The walter gets too salty for them and they want to leave this inhospitable environment, that's why they come out.

These are "Quahogs" something everyone comes to Cape Cod MA. for. The small ones are cherrystones they are perfect for eating raw with tobasco or shrimp cocktail sauce. The large ones I grind up with onion, bread, stuffing mix and spices like sage, eggs water and hot pepper flakes then stuff loosely back in shell tie with string and bake, delicious!

The small ones are little necks. Cherry stones are the medium sized ones. The big ones we call chowders.

I'm very curious as to where this mudflat is located. The clam looks a lot like the butter clams in the Pacific Northwest, but I've never heard of them reacting this way to seawater in their burrows.

Sea water and concentrated salt solution is different thing, sea water has a many element in them and sea water also has specific salinity which sea creature need to thrive, regular salt not alway come from sea and high concentrated salt will stressed and harm animal, for example, sea water dont hurt cut, wounded skin but salt solution will hurt like hell

I looked this up. This are animals who are very vulnerable for water with a higher concentration of salt than they are used by. In other words, if you try to make them escape from the ground, make sure you use water with a higher concentration of salt than in the seawater nearby.

1) assuming everyone here eats clams 2) eating clams or meat from tortured animals is not the same as eating farm raised animals treated well or animals caught from the wild 3) Many don't know what this salt water is for, how clams are actually caught, or even if it harms them in a torturous way, so comments on the previous mentioned are not inexcusable at all 4) stop trying to act smart and pretentious lol.

Some shells contain horses and lions, be very careful when dealing with them. A cobra jumped out of one and tried to fuck me in the ass, luckily I wear full medieval body armor. Better luck next time, donkey.

Wow I never knew this method of getting clams as I grew up 3 miles from the Atlantic Ocean on the East Coast of New Hampshire, USA..... we had to get our steamers the hard back breaking way by digging them but I will say they are the best & sweetest clams in the world!,
