They were weren’t really exposed they weren’t good at allowing that season lost super Copa, La Liga. This was they really were missing a proper ST who had a better finishing like Mbappe if that were the case Madrid would have slapped City in the first leg 2 weeks ago cuz the chances were much better than City. Even so they used a backup keeper, 2 starting CB injured. PSG and Borussia Dortmund are playing each other in the Champions League semifinals and both of them had to overcome challenges in the quarterfinals and in this UCL season as to well to get to where they are now. It looked as if it would be another year without champions league title for PSG since in the group stage they were close to going to the Europa League and while they narrowly went through, in the quarterfinals they lost the first leg to Barcelona and in the 2nd leg they had a 2 goals deficit on aggregate and looked as if they would be eliminated from the Champions League again. Everyone will say that they got lucky because of the red card which is true, but PSG came back from 2 goals down to win the tie 6-4 on aggregate. Even though they played with a man down in an important champions league game when you’re down a couple of goals you have to take advantage and that’s what they managed to do and unfortunately Barcelona didn’t have any solutions to cope with a red card. This reminds me of PSG’s run to the champions league final in 2020 when during COVID they had an easy run of games where they didn’t play an elite team until the final. We all see them as favorites to get by Borussia Dortmund in the semifinals, but given the way in which they knocked out Atletico Madrid, you can’t write off Dortmund and they’ve been playing excellent football of late too. Borussia Dortmund themselves has had to cope with their own challenges. Many of us wondered how they managed to top the group of death as everyone thought that they would finish bottom of the group and they went through and after the first leg, I saw Atletico Madrid going through to the semifinals, yet after a back and forth game at home where they led trailed then led again, Dortmund went though to the semifinals. They’ve had a dream run so far and everyone wrote them off as they expected them to finish bottom of the group and because they haven’t been in the best form in the Bundesliga, what we’ve seen from Borussia Dortmund this season it’s been noticeable in the last couple of years the same thing with Bayern Munich too this season which is that the competitive nature of the champions league and knockout format means that your league form doesn’t matter in Europe. Do you know how many times Manchester City have struggled in the champions league apart from last season especially after dominating the premier league every year, we’ve seen teams like Real Madrid and Chelsea win the champions league on multiple occasions in seasons where they’ve struggled in the league, Inter Milan have had a good season in Serie A but they’re out of the champions league a year after they got to the final where they were poor domestically. Just like Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund have struggled in the Bundesliga this season and that didn’t stop them from getting to the Champions League semifinals and there’s a reason why winning trophies is difficult and it deserves more appreciation because in knockout football you have to peak at the right time whereas in the league you have to be consistent against certain opponents and it’s all about longevity too.

They defeated 3 Premier League sides at that time, who were a slight favourites to reach semifinal (Chelsea were the title holders and had almost knocked Madrid out when they were 3-0 up in the 2nd leg at Bernabeu). Even Bayern Munich, who were in the last season with Robert Lewandowski, were still on its peak than Madrid at that time (they won the 19/20 season with always win record). They should have been one of the finalist in Paris, but sadly, Villarreal were really deserved.

Against Manchester City everyone saw Real Madrid as underdogs and they got written off because of what happened last season and their poor record at the Etihad. The first leg at the Bernabeu was interesting and it was a high scoring game between 2 of the best teams in Europe in Manchester City and Real Madrid and both teams scored brilliant goals on the night as well. After a 3-3 draw at home, many people believed that at home Manchester City would knock them out and do a repeat of what they did last season. In terms of possession and chances created, Manchester City outplayed them and had a lot of shots, overall their attack was poor simply because Real Madrid did a great job in nullifying their threat and they went through on penalties. As great of a team Manchester City are, did you really think that Real Madrid are gonna get knocked out of the Champions League by the same team 2 seasons in a row in their own competition. In Europe they’re a different beast their pedigree in champions league football is unmatched, I mean you don’t get to the UCL semifinals 12 times in the last 14 years if you’re lucky every time, because the reason why they’re the best and they always win the UCL is because they beat the best. These guys can get lucky yet come away with the win. The 2nd leg wasn’t as interesting as the first leg, Real Madrid did what they had to do as they defended for 120 minutes and while they didn’t hold onto the lead, this was a defensive masterclass from them. They’re an excellent team that plays counter attacking football and they break down teams in so many ways, part of Real Madrid’s DNA is to do anything in their power to win even if it means parking the bus. In the semifinals they’re up against a Bayern Munich team that beat Arsenal again in the Champions League quarterfinals and for them given the season they’ve had, it was a big win. Just like Real Madrid, their champions league experience and pedigree worked in their favor against a team that’s never won the UCL ever. It’s going to be an interesting game, but I don’t see how Bayern Munich will beat Real Madrid across 2 legs, I think this is the most vulnerable Bayern Munich team in years especially since they just lost the Bundesliga for the first time in 12 years and obviously it didn’t matter in the UCL because it’s different from league football. I see Real Madrid going through, but since Bayern Munich are playing the first leg at home they would be fine with a draw or a 2-1 win possibly.
