I Played Three Hours of Elden Ring’s DLC, and I Have Thoughts

Ойындар

I recently got to play Elden Ring's upcoming DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree, for three hours at an event in Paris. Here's my analysis of what I got my hands on, and why no preview of something so dauntingly huge can be fully comprehensive.

How does one preview an expansion for what is already one of the most expansive, flexible games ever made? When so much of what players enjoy and don't is going to come down to granular choices made in terms of build, an expansion as massive as Shadow of the Erdtree, coming two years after Elden Ring's release, is only going to complicate matters-making it impossible to state with any degree of universality.
And so, when Bandai Namco invited me to a preview event for the upcoming Shadow of the Erdtree expansion last week, allowing me three hours hands-on with the game, I decided I wasn't going to try and cover absolutely every new aspect of the DLC, instead simply trying to honestly describe my own personal experience and the complicated feelings I had to work through during those three hours. Insodoing, however, I come to the conclusion that the most exciting part about the upcoming Elden Ring expansion is that it is bigger than any of us could have possibly envisioned.
Let's talk weapon arts, environments, bosses and difficulty in this (sort of) preview for Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree!
0:00 - Intro
0:08 - It feels impossible to preview Shadow of the Erdtree
1:52 - The structure of the Elden Ring preview
3:29 - Shadow of the Erdtree is TOUGH
5:59 - The new options are daunting
7:40 - The massive explorable areas of Shadow of the Erdtree
8:31 - The bosses
9:16 - The sinking feeling of previewing Erdtree
10:08 - Why Shadow of the Erdtree is so exciting
11:53 - Outro
---
As stated in the video, the preview event didn't allow direct capture, and so the footage (unless stated otherwise) is from b-roll provided by Bandai Namco.
Bandai Namco paid for flights and accommodation to Paris for the night. They had zero editorial control over any part of the script.

Making the "mini sequel" to Elden Ring as a big, and relatively expensive, DLC is a pretty good idea. The devs can reuse the same engine as is, while concentrating on just making new content. Also, who's ready for 18 inches of Messmer?.

Based on past DLCs, you'll want a character with a completed build (which clearly includes a lot of Vigor), but you probably DON'T want to push into NG+ cycles because that's going to amplify the HP and damage of the enemies. You don't necessarily need to finish the game, but it's probably a good idea to progress to that "full build" point, whatever that means to you. Personally I've already started a new character to start rebuilding my muscle memory and timing, since my main from release with 100% completion went into at least one NG+. I'm shooting for a couple maxed weapons and casting catalysts and all the useful spells and talismans.

I guess the open world is like breath of the wild. Except there is almost no friendly settlements or npcs except for roundtable hold. The main attractions are the legacy dungeons that have treasures and awesome bosses at the ends. It can be a very difficult game but it can also be a very easy game depending on how much you want to prepare. I will say that my least favorite part of the game is the very confusing quest system. I do not think it is feasible to play all of the game blind aside from the core bosses. So as long as you are okay with using the wiki, it is a wonderful game to sink hundreds of hours into.

This game is nothing at all like Skyrim, except that exploration plays a key role. The quests will only give you vague direction if any, but they aren't necessarily the point. You're not going to be able to do everything on one playthrough, and even if you could I don't think you should. The main point of the game, like pretty much all of Fromsoftware's games, is the combat system and building your character to your own unique play style. It's a difficult game, but the game gives you tools at every turn to overcome the challenges. Not only that, but because Elden Ring is an open world it means that if you're having trouble with one area it's ok to go a different direction and try something else. These games aren't for everyone, but I believe everyone should give them a solid try at least once.

I’m sorry to say but the end game bosses in ER are too hard, I barely escaped without summons and I don’t plan on using them in the dlc. Either the bosses are unreasonably hard and frustrating or you use summons and they’re all trivial speed bumps. Balancing is the worst I’ve ever seen in a video game and no one talks about that. FSW fucked up big time. And that’s fine, bc most gamers are cool with summoning and optimizing the challenge out. I believe in playing solo and unfortunately FSW designed their bosses to be played with ash summons/coop, so playing solo goes against the design philosophy of the bosses. FSW needs to realize not everyone wants to make it easy, which is why they’re this big of a company in the first place. If FSW started making bosses in DeS with the same design philosophy as Er, no one would care bc they’d just summon and have a shitty time. The reason FSW is so successful is because people enjoyed overcoming a challenge that was presented to them fairly, balanced and reasonable. If you got good you succeeded. In ER, you’re encouraged to summon and that sucks.
