I Played The New 2024 Epiphone Les Paul Custom For A Month... Do I Think It's Worth $1299 Now?😬
Ойын-сауық
One month ago I purchased a brand new 2024 $1299 Epiphone Inspired by Gibson Custom Shop Les Paul Custom in Alpine White, and was a little on the fence if it was actually worth that price. But after owning it, making music with it, and comparing it to other guitars for a month, has my mind changed about this guitar? Is it worth the price tag?? Is it overpriced??? LET'S FIND OUT!

I'm sick of things being more expensive and lesser quality, i'm sick of price-gouging, i'm sick of corporate greed. I'm not accusing epiphone of any of that, but if no one pushes back on these insane price hikes they're just going to keep going up. If stuffs going to get more expensive, then at the VERY least the quality needs to show for that.

@@DenDenBMXI bought AJ and a black and white LP and all 3 needed a level job. The pickups in the white one had to be replaced. The build quality is good and felt great to play but at that price range I should not have had to do a level job or replace a set of pickups. Gibson offered to replace them but shouldn’t have to do that on a brand new guitar. The pickups are NOT THE SAME as they put into a USA made.
I used to buy and spend months comparing guitars which is quite a lot of fun but eventually I've come to realization that I don't need those guitars if I can buy me a premium custom shop from Gibson. I ended up selling all my guitars to afford a regular Gibson Les Paul custom which I acquired in 2023. Since then I've been tremendously happy and satisfied with it. Absolutely no regrets selling my Gibson LP standard and classic. It's surely a quality instrument and a keeper. I have a feeling you will end up with a Gibson Les Paul custom real soon 😅

maybe one day i'll get a Gibson custom, but right now i'm not feeling too hot about gambling thousands of dollars on whether or not i'll get a good one. And right now with Gibson's focus on being a luxury brand making $20,000+ guitars for rich people instead of working on improving Gibson USA's subpar quality control among a myriad of other things that I will be talking about in a future video, they're not really a brand I want to support these days. If I was gonna get one i'd probably go for one that was made in the 90s

I have one in Alpine White. And I like it. A lot. For me, everything about it is great. I am taking it to my luthier next week for a pro setup and fret dress. In the meantime, I took off the covers and checked out the parts. Mine has Gibson USA 490R and 498T pickups, CTS pots, Mallory caps and Switchcraft switch and output jack. I was pleased to find that the cavities were super clean and painted white. The wirings were neatly soldered and nicely tucked. I am very happy with this guitar. So impressed that I purchased the IGC 1959 ES-355 in Ebony within a couple of weeks later.
In my opinion Epiphone should just sell these guitars for a better price and move more of them by discontinuing their models with lesser specs. It feels like they are making improvements and asking more when they should just make improvements that replace their former standards instead of giving us so many price and options headaches

I think a lot of the backlash wouldn't have happened if these guitars were only $900 or even right at $1000, I guarantee that would've been the price if they'd released these in 2020. Either that or if they released for the price they are but the quality control was SUBSTANTIALLY better. Instead they picked the higher margin pricing and did the absolute bare minimum when it came to improving quality control.

Gibson uses veneer and lots of it... · Jan 5, 2024 Gibson's semi-hollowbodies like the ES-335 and ES-339 have tops and backs constructed of layers (either 3 or 4) of maple veneer. My understanding is that the veneers are assembled in successive cross-grain layers with the top layer having its grain longitudinal to the length of the guitar. The tops and backs are approximately 1/4" in thickness after layup.

I have several Epi,s. 2013 LP Standard. 2021 LP 50's. 2022 Silverburst Custom. 2022 "Wino" Jerry Cantrell. They're all very nice but not as good as my, 2003 South Korean made LP Standard Flametop. It weighs at least 10 pounds, probably more, and the tone and sustain is terrific. Would love to replace the pots and wiring and refret it. When Epiphone says these newer models are "better constructed" its kind of a slap in the face to anyone thats bought the older models. Still I would love to check out the newer Custom and 59 LP's, preferably in a store where I can thoroughly inspect it. And likely ask the store if they can prove they still have the stock pickups, just to be safe.

The one to go for without a doubt is the 355... That one is worth the money
I recently bought one and I totally agree with you on the pickups, the tuners and the neck shape. I’ve played on 498t pick ups and these sound way too muddy. The neck is way too chunky, It felt like I was working extra hard to play this guitar. I ended up returning the guitar cause It didn’t meet my expectations. In my opinion it’s over priced. Yes the open book headstock is beautiful! But trust me, the standard Epiphone with pro buckers sounds the same and feels better. Save your money.
from what I've seen the pickups are exactly as advertised from my own buddy's gibson les paul custom to the epiphone les paul custom igc and you're absolutely right they don't sound at all as advertised they're extremely dark
I got the same one… I love it! 😎👍
0:41 - If you'd rather not have that high pitched sliding noise in your playing I'd suggest to relax your hand after each chord and move on to the next by hovering above the string. If you press down whilst changing you get these sliding noises.

I have played some ec-256's but not the new ones, however I agree that those guitars are also incredible, I like how the new 256's are like les paul studios just not $2000 and have better quality control, and the new ec-01's are awesome too, like a modern les paul junior, just again with actual modern specs and better quality control
I don't think they are worth 1200, but it's pretty clear you just don't like epiphones at all. By the way, you do know if you tighten the screw on the tuners, it will tighten them up right. I bought an epiphone classic worn not long ago it was really good. Then again, I only paid 450 for it. I think most guitars are hit and miss, with maybe the exception of PRS. Unfortunately, I don't like PRS

Actually I had been a massive lifelong fan of gibson and epiphone until these last few years when they got all weird, you know what they say about assuming. What I actually don't like is billion dollar corporations like Gibson/Epiphone putting out lesser quality products for an increasingly gouged price. like I said in the video all mass produced guitars are going to have some bad eggs, but while the ratio of good to bad guitars from most brands is 80/20, Gibson and Epiphone are around 60/40
I have the Inspired by Gibson "Worn" series. that i then upgraded with pickups, bone nut, redrilled for cts pots, capacitors. its a 2020. it outplays and sounds better then my 2018 Custom shop lespaul. this guitar would be pretty cool. and is on my watch list.

I own a 2016 Gibson LP Stnd and an Epiphone Ltd Ed 1959 Les Paul Standard Outfit, but the best LP I have played to date is not an LP at all. It's a Fender Special Edition Custom Telecaster FMT with Duncan pickup's 🤣

I think the headstock probably adds about $200 to the overall vibe. Pickups *should* add a few hundred bucks more as well, so the price makes sense if you are a Gibby fanboy. I picked up the ES-355 version and it’s no Gibson. It feels a little cheap, but it plays and sounds amazing.

EPI’s are not a bad value, I find the quality to be, why not 100% very acceptable for the cost with very minor issues. Realizing that a Gibson custom new is 5 times more expensive you can’t go wrong with the new epi custom if you want one. As for the sound that’s certainly subjective, I for one like the pickups tones. Last, once you receive it, if you have an issue send it back and get another it’s not hard!, reviewers are a dime a dozen ignore them and go with your own gut and in the end if it doesn’t work out no loss, move past it and get something else 😊.

Gibson's price gouging doesn't justify Epiphone's price gouging. If the spec and lax quality control on these are good enough for you, then great. But after experiencing this new epiphone I can confidently say your money could be spend much better
Well now! I am 71 and have been playing guitar since 1964. I am also a guitar tech for the last 47 yrs. I have owned a few Epiphones and Gibsons. Also a lot of other brands including Fender. Epiphone is way out of line selling these Open Book Inspired by Gibson guitars for over $1000. The shape of the headstock does not warrant the price at all. I agree with you that Epiphone is price gouging but then aren't all of them doing that these days. I was furniture shopping a while back and it occured to me that some wood and metal no matter how much craftsmenship it has, is not 3 times what a couch or kitchen table and chairs cost. Just my old man 2 cents.

Most brands do have inflated pricing these days, bur gibson and epiphone seem to be the most egregious about it by a long shot
I could be wrong but from what I see, Epiphone decided a couple years ago to change the headstock a bit, and made the 59 at a slight premium. Once that guitar was out and people raved about it was when they did the complete headstock change and jacked the price. I honestly think Epiphone is trying to figure out how much price gouging the market will support. At the end of the day, if people keep paying inflated prices the prices aren't going to go down. These days I buy my guitars used. So much more product for the money.

I bought the first iteration (Kalamazoo headstock) of the 59 LP new. My guitar is a well made guitar and sounds good and stays in tune (I've upgraded the bridge, tailpiece and tuners though) I regret buying new however, I should have waited until the guitar came on the 2nd hand market (they started to appear on the 2nd hand market about 6 months later) because I could have got it for 30% less!

Looking at this, I wish Guild made a white Bluesbird, and I wish the Bluesbirds were closer the the thickness of a Les Paul. Hmm...so then why not just get a Les Paul? Well, I like the idea of Les Paul meets ES335. Which is basically a Guild Bluesbird is. I have the black Bluesbird, which has a pickguard ( the nat finish doesn't). I hated it's looks and even made a Les Paul pickguard for it (it had to be slightly larger)... Then one day I realized that the OEM Bluesbird pickguard looks like an ES335 pickguard, and that's when I realized Guild borrowed from the 335: the Semi Hollow Body, the body width right in between the 335 and the LP. The horn is 335, the body thickness is 335. At a glance the guitar looks like a chubby Les Paul. My black Guild Bluesbird is a June-2016, made in South Korea and it's a flawless build. It had only an inferior 3-way toggle ( you know the type with the thin 'half moon" shaped flat spring metal. Well it will snap at the seam. SO ALWAYS buy Switchcraft 3-way toggles! So it ended up at a Music Go Round brand ( all clear vinyl protection on chrome and tags etc) new for 450 usd back in November 2019.

And I have to laugh also , you just said Gibson pickup’s suck which half the world loves. So………

If you actually payed attention you'd know I didn't list the specs in this video because i've already listed them in great detail in the 4 other videos I made with this guitar. And I never said Gibson pickups suck, I said their quality control sucks, which is why the pickups in this guitar don't sound the best.

according to Gibson's website they're supposed to be their snappier higher output pickup, and that is not the case. If that's not what they're going for then they should advertise them properly. But putting Gibson and Epiphone into a box like that is silly, they shouldn't be for only one type of music
Well on these grover tuners you can alway tighten the screw on the kidney buttons. dont overtighten it though, might impossible to turn afterwards😂

@@DenDenBMX I have had many Gibson USA guitars. Now I only have Gibson Custom Shop guitars. The Gibson LP Custom is worth the money if you have the change to drop. That being said, the reason I bought the Gibson LP Custom is because I was blown away by the Epiphone. That was before the 2024 revamp.
BARITONE! Get a baritone prs SE or a baritone kiesel or ANY baritone 6. You will have the lower range you're looking for and have a ton of features that are conducive to extended range. I personally think the customs and the greeny are the worst value for the money, only because you can buy the pickups in them cheap and swap them into a 799 custom or a 50’s std and you have the essentials. The AJ is a sweet guitar, but I’d argue 1299 is perfectly reasonable. The 59’s are closest to the price value only because you’re getting custombuckers ($500), real MOP inlays and a more vintage correct neck. That’s just my opinion. Honestly, the only thing I think makes the new customs cool is the one thing you don’t like, and that’s the neck. If I could get a 50’s profile neck on the 799 guitar I’d buy one tomorrow.

@@DenDenBMX Mine sound bright and bitey. May just be inconsistency in the manufacturing. I first had the $799 version with the probuckers, then they dropped this one, so I had Sweetwater exchange. The probuckers sounded good but muddier/foggier. The 490/498s just sound a lot crisper. Again, could just be inconsistency/QA issue.

yeah i'm pretty over Gibson at this point
I didn't think you were gonna keep it after the last video because the neck just didn't seem to be a good fit for your hand. As far as those pickups and my previous comments about my Gibson's 490/498 and my other 2 Epi LP Customs' Probuckers, I have an update. A few weeks ago, I got rid of a bunch of gear that I had trouble GIVING away and instead traded it for a Marshall DSL40 at Guitar Center with a little cash left over! My first tube amp. I don't know if it's due to using an actual amplifier over a computer modeling setup, but the difference in sound between my Gibson and Epiphones is significantly more substantial now, whereas it was fairly marginal at best in a solid state with distortion pedals. Yes, the 490/498 are pretty damn dark, but simply boosting the upper amp EQ and using an EQ pedal in the loop took care of most of that. I wouldn't say the Probuckers absolutely suck, but they were never meant to be in my guitars for long anyway. I suspect there will be a lot of buyers' remorse in the not-so-distant future for these premium Epiphones and I might look at this model at somepoint in the future for what should be a fairly substantial discount. If I do get one, it will have EMG's 85/81 put in it and have a bullseye graphic painted on it. However, my current white LPC might be a good candidate for that as well and put the money for something else. 5 Les Pauls is enough. If the Adam Jones LP Custom was an actual Silverburst and not the piss looking Antique hue, I'd be $1500 in debt. Calling people over 40 "Boomers" is very hurtful. 44-60 is GenX. We've been fighting Boomers our entire lives.
@DenDenBMX
Ай бұрын
I would love to see someone turn one of these new customs into a bullseye! I think tube amps do sound better in person, they have a certain analog feel and thump that modelers haven't quite nailed down yet, but for videos/recording modelers and plug-ins are basically indiscernible from a tube amp. And I know a lot of you aren't boomers haha. I just thought it was funny how so many old farts came to my channel running their mouth and then got REALLY upset when I accidentally said "boomer" instead of "olds", you seem cool tho, thanks for watching!

@@DenDenBMX Most of the Boomers' comments just come from insecurity. "I spent $9500 on my Custom Shop Les Paul and some kid with a $950 Epiphone sounds better than I do! I saved up my whole life for this guitar and now I have this underlying sick feeling that it's not the best thing ever... " Then again my 490/498's were made almost 30 years ago as my LP is a '97 model. Maybe that has a difference. I dunno, but there is a difference now. I had an '81 Custom made from spare parts like a Frankenstein into a Bullseye made for me back in 2001 because I didn't have $5000 back then either. The body is starting to come apart, but the electronics are still in great condition. The monster just needs a new body. It will eIther be my current white LP Custom, Slash (completely blacked out Vermillion finish, dyed board to look like ebony, black hardware, even the nut) or possibly this new "premium model" LPC or the Matt Heafy white LP Custom with that speed taper neck that I want to try.
And let's not forget that you can buy a used Gibson in that range.
