Professional systems engineer here: most PA systems have a low end shelf of about +12db @ ≈85hz relative to the rest of the mix. We call it a haystack, and it helps match the human ears perception at loud volumes. If you have been making these tracks at show volume, but without that boost, your low end is gonna sound crazy every time you go out. A simple eq from the sp404 mkii, guitar pedal, or something like that would be more than enough to compensate for differences in the pa across shows so you don’t have to change up every element of your mix

Hell yeah! Congrats, Gabe! A simple mixer with a few bands of EQ might be nice to have, along with all the cables you need to connect to it plus pair of quarter inch or XLR cables to go out. It's nice to have some basic control on stage over low end and high end that comes after the main setup so that you can adjust to a boomy room or a PA with too much top end. I DJ occasionally and I always bring my Mackie Mix8 and cables plus a stereo direct box, power strip and extension cord in a Gator mixer bag. I don't always use it but I always have it, and I've saved more than a couple nights for myself and other performers because I have it with me. Even if it's only me using it, I like knowing that I'm going into a consistent and flexible mixer that I control and then going out of that in a way that any PA will accommodate.

I love how much you are buzzing over this. Amazing. But triggering scenes on both devices is my biggest bugbear with the dual circuit setup. I really wish Novation would fix that. I've gone as far as to suggest to Novation both the ability to: 1) colour code the scenes, like I do with my cue points in Serato, which gives me the ability to confidently jump to different parts of the track. 2) switch scenes, maybe even remotely via a Launchpad X, the scenes on BOTH devices at the same time. I find I'm particularly frustrated when I try to use the excellent Rhythm DJ style effects to build to a drop, but then I can't keep the tension building to the drop, unless I make use of Project switching.

I'm hyped. And yeah, I'd love if Novation updated that, but I was able to make it work with risers, occasional automation, and the master filter. I mainly had to use scene switching anytime the Tracks needed to do something longer than a bar. For big drops, I was able to rely more on project switching.

I've now done four +1 hour live sets with Circuit Tracks as the sequencer and two varying external synths. The main selling point of the CT is the intuitive interface which shines in live situations. I order and color code my projects based on BPM. I also have a cheat sheet as backup on paper with reminders on where the drop is and what batch I need to select on my external synths. It's been a blast!

I did not synch anything because as a giging guitar player for many years, that has great timing, I wanted to do everything live. Also, it was all improvised (one hour set). The Rhythm worked perfectly as kind of the center of everything, and then I would do more chill sections with Setraq being the center to give a different feel to everything.

No regrets at all! I'm using a BOSS RC-505mk2 loopstation, an Astrolab for synths and a CT for all beats and additional stuff, all midi-synced to the loopstation..it is such a creative way to go live. The CT is by far the most flexible and fast accessible beast of them all! I was wondering for you 'bass problem' maybe a small eq-mixer would help? Anyway, keep rocking!

9:05 too much bass isn't the worst. I was at a recent event and one guy's snare was like a fricken headshot! I had to back off well away from the stage. 🤕 When I used to go clubbing in my younger days it was good when the tweeters were stacked way on top of the mids - the dance floor was the safest place from those ear shredding highs. At least excessive bass just rearranges one's digestive system. 😎

I searched for your videos because I know you know Rhythm inside out and my question is this: Is it possible to load the samples (more than one or more than eight, until the available time runs out) on the key grid and play them "one shot/gate/loop" without writing them on the sequencer?

  • @GabeMillerMusic

1:30 who is that lightweight DJ table manufactured/sold by?

AxcessAbles is the company, Lightweight 28x16 Portable DJ Table Stand is the product. The table surface likes to flex a bit, but other than that I like it a lot.

You are aware you can sync the clocks right?

  • @GabeMillerMusic

The Circuits are sync'd via midi, and project switching on the master device will project switch on the other one. However, there's a bug (that I've confirmed with Novation support) that causes stuff to sometimes drop in at the wrong time in certain situations. Switching scenes does NOT work over midi, so for specific sections, I have to scene switch on both devices simultaneously. Check the full video about using both together for a much more in depth explanation.

I haven't used a subpac before, but I will play it on a variety of systems to see how the bass translates.

Congratulation to your live rave! Here some inspiration for you: If you want to see plenty (!) live techno performances with the novation tracks you need to check out "Gray Contrast" in Berlin See www.youtube.com/@GrayContrast Gray Contrast is next level amazing. He plays - Live Techno sets with the novation track as brain - on the street (!) in front of a random crowd - with live looping with boss RC-505 and lot´s of improvisation - on battery power Simply amazing what he achives with a simple set up on the street!

BTW: Check out the perfomance with live looped trumpet with the female artists. Improvised Techno on the Novation Tracks with a live looped trumpet is amazing. Never heard of techno with live trumpets in my life before.
