Hey, creative director for Abigor here. I always knew in the back of my mind that there was a chance we could show up on an Iron Pineapple video but I didn't think it would actually happen. Our team worked really hard on Abigor for 8 months and put our hearts into it. Glad you had fun with it; I couldn't hope for more! Thanks for playing, made my day.

It's actually really not that bad. I'd say even the combat is about 70% of the way there. Level design, maybe 20% since there's so much repetition; most roguelikes use proc-gen for a reason. Character controller like 80%, it just needs a lot of polish. Some balancing later, and it would probably be a pretty solid game. It takes so little to make a game feel bad. Like a platformer with no coyote time, which seems like a very minor addition, leads to a lot of people feeling deaths are unfair which sucks the fun out of it for them.

@@CrysJaL Having gone to college to study game design, I can confirm that (usually, at least) artists, designers and programmers tend to be very different personality types with drastically differing levels of competence. A designer worth their salt can balance a game, write well, make sure it's fun to play - but can't draw very well and putting together even basic code is a stretch (this was me). Artists, they can paint a gorgeous vibrant cascade of evocative imagery, _provided_ they don't have to do it with words. And programmers, well, they make everything work, work their butts off to do so, and are probably the most intelligent team members in terms of raw mental processing power and abstract thinking... while, again, not being great at the other two specializations' fortes. It's really just an evolution of the old webcomic dilemma: You either have at least two people working on a comic, or it's going to be either beautiful but vapid... or amazingly written, but look like dog poop. If you want everything to be up to the ever-higher standards we gamers have set for our games, you kinda have to get together a team of talented specialists! And those who don't... who lack a proper designer, for instance... well, you can usually tell. This Tower Princess thing sounded like a prime example to me, even before I read your comment.

@@Avrysatos Little Witch Nobeta: amazing blend of Resident Evil and Souls gameplay + cute and horror artstyles, it's a bit exploitative of characters and I wish levels weren't just the same 2 textures repeated over and over infinitely, but the core gameplay is an amazing mix of systems that synergize with each other and the bosses are really good. (The full release happened like a week ago btw) TUNIC: It's got an amazing sense of mystery and discovery due to some stuff I can't even talk about without spoiling the experience. If you like ARGs or grew up with 1990s gaming instruction manuals and schoolyard rumors, this game will speak to you on a personal level. Ender Lilies: It's got the souls sadness more than the gamplay, but the "you can leave a spirit behind and keep moving while it attacks autonomously" mechanic is pretty fun and has a lot of depth. The map is an atrocious mess that makes it HARDER to understand areas and also doubles as a little nagging reminder to backtrack to complete areas (which usually fails because of how many movement abilities you need) and overall I burned out on it so much near the end, I reached the final boss but never even fought them. Death's Gambit: played this in early access and replayed it when the big overhaul dropped, IMO the final cut made it worse (the forced humor just ruins the somber elements, most of the new areas are featureless padding corridors, the new ending selection gimmick actively punishes you for trying to enjoy all the content in the game, and don't get me started on the stat and upgrade systems...) Vigil: The Longest Night: I haven't actually played it yet (I got it right before Elden Ring news started happening and then got permanently distracted by FROMSoftware) so I can't tell you what I think about it yet, but it looks amazing. Death Trash: Also haven't played it, I'm thinking I'll hold off until it leaves early access, but I love it conceptually and style-wise so I just had to support the dev right away. Hellpoint: Amazing area design and has one of the best hubs in any soulslike, indie or not, but the gameplay is really janky with little touches like "hitboxes appear the same frame as attack tells, so you can't use the tell do see attacks coming before they hit you". If you play soulslikes for exploration, taking cool screenshots and feeling insignificant you might enjoy it, if you play for the core gameplay loop you probably won't. It really was 7 games, huh? I didn't realize until I counted...
Seeing Asterigos here was a pleasant surprise because that game is already on my wish list. Seems like you had a good time with it, that makes me even more motivated to buy it. Quick update in case anyone cares: I played it and loved it. Highly recommend.

Hat tip to you playing Wo Long : Fallen Dynasty demo! I beaten the PS5 version and have a bonus waiting. For me, troubles started at the half-point near the boss but I managed to request some back-up and finish him off with two peeps just before the lockdown time on it. Another problem to me is one must take note on leveling up; choose their elements wisely because boost one, lose two... tricky! This is where balance is key. And *yes* I agree with you completely that deflecting moves of the enemy to me felt very weak (and got me in a lot of trouble at the later half-point) and at least the 2nd attempt and onward against the major boss was me being hyper-aggressive on him and cornering him. Went well till Form-2 in which he was not staggered that easily even against 3 peeps to 1, but we did it.
the animations of the Tower Princess enemies and the art style of White Lavender is great
The addtion of Sir Whoopass to this list makes me way too happy tbh

What we need is a Conkers reboot in the souls genre.
For the first game, there should be a hotkey to toggle friendly fire on and off, so you can surprise your friends after building their trust that you can't or won't hurt them. Would make for some very entertaining moments.
I've been really liking Asterigos myself, but Immortal Planet will always have a special place in my heart, being my 1st souls-like and all.
Abigor may have been amateurish but it was SO sincere and the hand drawn cutscenes charmed me so much. Compared to something more polished but cynical like sir badass, I thought Abigor looked much more fun overall.

Recently found your channel, and bingewatched all your "I playe Soulslike that you've never heard of" videos. Really liked it. Also, may I recommend you "Enclave" and "Legend of Kay Anniversary"?
I first heard of Asterigos because the singer of the Nier songs, Emil Evans, did a lot of work for its music. You can also see some nier inspiration from the two-weapon system, so if the full game is good it might be a perfect fit for me as a combination of both nier and souls elements!

I really love this series. Funny enough, Titan Souls was my first souls like game, even before dark souls. It’s so cool to see the hidden gems, both the ones that should see light, and others that should stay hidden. I was curious if you’ve played Necropolis on of of these episodes. It’s An older game, that unfortunately has been abandoned by the developers, but it is still a pretty fun game. Highly recommend you take a look.
Man, Sokpop's games are so charming! Also it's disappointing that Wo Long's release version tutorial still didn't properly explain the Spirit gauge
Hey, so, been watching this series for a bit. I legit use these videos to find new games, and, I gotta say, Asterigos caught my eye. The demo was great. I legit loved every moment of play time I had in it. I'm so glad I found this, and I cannot wait for the release. I'm so hyped to give a new IP and new to me developer a try. Thanks so much~
This was a random recommendation on my feed, but it was so good. I don't play souls-like games, and 40 minutes seemed like quite a mouthful, but it went by in a flash. The reviews were short but good, and it was a blast to see all the different games. Subbed!

Oh you need to watch the older ones! Some of the videos are absolutely hilarious.
I just wanted to pop in and say I'm really glad you're highlighting some more fringe games here, I'm a big lover of indie game titles and got two more from this video alone now, which I might not have found otherwise. I don't mind if you do more than souls likes too, but if that's what you like to play that's ok as well. As an aspiring game dev I definitely also appreciate you showing off some student projects. Maybe one day I will see my own up there.

Glad you have fun making these videos and not becoming boring for you ! So do we watching them
Divinus Vanitas suddenly reminded me a bit of Soul sacrifice, which was technically monster hunter but with magic. Also tower princess is sadly another example of games that have amazing art direction but is lackluster on almost every area.
These videos give me ideas for comedy RPGs. Like if you defeat the tutorial boss in one hit, he admits you are stronger, and we get a 30 second training montage of the boss. It cuts back to you just lounging around in the boss arena as the boss returns, and now the real fight begins.
