How To Paint A Sailboat - Ep 283 - Lady K Sailing

Ever wondered how to paint a sailboat? I rolled and tipped Pettit Easy Poxy Sailboat paint but I cheated and made it even easier to paint a sailboat! I let you know which sanders worked and didn't work sanding a sailboat, apply vinyl stickers to my sailboat, and which products I used to sand and clean and paint my sailboat are covered.

Lady K looks Great!!! For random orbital sanding, always get a long flexible hose hooked up to a bucket (cyclone) trap and then to a shop vac. (Don't overthink fitting hoses and the tool just use duct tape. Hose goes over your shoulder.) This keeps the dust under control, but it also keeps it out of the sand paper grit so your sanding is more efficient. Always us vacuum cleaner bags in the shop vac. If the one you bought doesn't have this option? Just duct tape them in. Been doing if for years. The cyclone trap catches most of the dust, the bag catches the rest and the pleated filter on the shop vac never gets clogged up so you never lose power. Also wear a respirator and a Tyvex suit. A respirator is 100%, paper dust masks, even good ones don't work nearly as well. You want to keep the dust out of your lungs. For shaping: Get a long belt sander belt, 4" wide and cut it, then split it lengthwise. Get cut a piece of 1/4" plywood put handles on the ends. Just copy the tool that's like this. Glue one strip on it. This will shape your hull patches 'fair.' You can then use the finer grits. And grits. Always step through the grits. If you start with 40, go 60, 80, 100, 120, 150/180, 220. It could take you weeks to remove 60 grit scratches with 120 paper. What you'll find is that you need a lot of the lower grit pads and not very many of the higher grit numbers. And don't wait until the sandpaper is gunked up to replace it. As soon as the 'tooth' in the abrasive is worn off it's done. Painting is of course 90% prep, 10% painting. Replacing sandpaper sooner saves a lot of time and effort. David Lee, KZread channel, who fixed a Lagoon 450, is the expert on dust control. (I gave him all the tricks I learned over 50 years, and he improved every one of them. ) Great to hear you use a roller extension pole. Why oh why do so many KZreadrs never use them?? The 'swirlies' mxers. Good tip. I've tried to bootleg drill mixing tools. Not worth it. Just buy them. Well worth it. Mixing epoxy? I always use a cheap gram scale ($10 on Amazon). I drape saran wrap over the top. Make sure you look up the mix ratios by weight. (Different than volume). I've made simple spreadsheets for the two West System Hardeners. You only need 0 to 10 in 0.1 or 0.2 increments. (grams, ounces, pounds... the ratios are all the same. "1.1" can be 1 gram, 11 grams, 1.1 kg or 1100 pounds) Column 1 is resin, Column 2 is hardener, column 3 is total weight. One page per hardener. Color code it with highlighters and laminate them, or seal them in a baggie. Beats those pumps cold. With the cheap gram scale you can mix tiny amounts or all the way up to 500g (l lb). If you go over with the hardener it's easy to fudge a bit more resin to make it work. Once you try this you'll never do it any other way. I can tell you know what you're doing. You have the heavy duty filler. I've seen KZreadrs attach hardware with lightweight fillers. The instant pancake mix I've used on occasion is better for this than any lightweight filler. And white vinegar is cheap and makes a great 'thinner' for epoxy clean up. I drop the cheap 'chip brushes' in it and use them over and over.

If you apply soapy water (dawn) under your decals be fore applying them, then you can adjust them, and it helps remove the air bubbles.

As a house painter, doubling back like you did when rolling is called “back rolling” and is the most effective way to paint… even your house. It is like 1.5 paint coats in one go. The orange peel is usually because of too much paint on the roller, but doubling back tends to remove it. Sounds like a rough product to work with, but great results 👍

For power tools, I favor Makita the most, followed by Milwaukee and Dewalt, which are both superb. . . . . Hook and loop sanding pads can be obtained in 40 grit. ALWAY wash and scrub new roller sleeves and chip brushes because they will have stray fibers from the factory. Make sure to have plenty of rags and NO DIRTY LIPS on paint cans. Clean as you go and when you put the top back on the top of the can and the groove in the lid must be clean. Appl first coats of primer and paint as thinly as possible, with subsequent coats getting thicker so they will expand more than lower coats when it gets hot. It says on the can you can repaint in 24 hours, but you're better waiting longer, days longer.

As a woodworker, 3M Cubitron sandpaper is the best. A bit more expensive, but with wood, you save time and go thru less sandpaper. Plus it’s a net so there’s no holes to line up. Is it better sanding a boat than cheap sandpaper? My money is on the Cubitron.

Looks great Tim. Never used Petit but looks like it came out great. After having sanded and repainted my deck 2 years ago and the bottom this year I’ll echo the amount of sanding needed….you’re never quite prepared for how much. lol. I used the same dewalt sander and I’m convinced it’s indestructible. I couldn’t believe the abuse it took. I’ll also echo the epoxy kit as I have one too having done 2 deck repairs and it’s a must. I used Total Boat Total Fair vs the watertight and was great. I echo the sanding pads and paint swirlie mixer from Amazon. Great video Tim and all of your suggestions are really helpful. Anyone thinking about doing it should just do it. It’s not that hard just takes time. You’ll be proud of the results and save a pile of money!

I've used paint rollers, and telescoping extensions for my paint rollers. But the last time I put on bottom paint I cut off a bit of broom handle to make a 14" extension for my paint roller. Even the shortest telescoping extension is too long and too bulky, when I'm down on my back under the boat, but the unextended roller just doesn't quite reach. Just a simple modest extension can make things easier.

Porter cable random orbital sander, 6". Model 7336 (new is 7346). Variable 6 speed gentle or powerful. Handle can be used on either side or not at all. Buy the vacuum kit so a shopvac will suck up the dust as you sand. Used on Ebay is fine as mine has done not just a repaint, but the bottom and many projects (indestructible). New is a 7346, but do they make them like they use to? Tipping did make it smooth and glossy......

Super basic question for painting, sanding, even for just cleaning a hull. How do you get even results with the hull in contact with supports? Do you have to get the boat hoisted into different positions after each round of work so you can get to the contact points that you couldn’t reach before?

If you notice- those little metal contact points are only touching the black bottom paint- not the blue sides of the boat. I painted the bottom with black ablative bottom paint (separately) - did the best I could to fill in around the metal stands - then when the boat is lifted to go in the water, you can just dab a little on those spots- it really doesn’t make much of a difference

I guess this is a little late. But if it's warmer than the 72 degrees could have thinned your paint a little more. I've painted the same product at 90 degrees. You'd have to add thinner as needed in roller pan as the heat reduces your paint the longer it sits in the pan. Then no orange peel. She looks like a new boat.

Absolutely worth doing this process if you enjoy it. Otherwise you are way better off hiring someone to do it and spend the same time working over time.

Looks more than good enough. I have a question about IOR boat classes, such as quarter-ton, half-ton, three-quarter ton, and on. I wonder what these ratings were based on. They seem tho have no direct dimensional connection to the actual boat size or proportions. My working theory is that these ratings are based on likely crew weight. A quarter-tonner, for example, is like to have three to four crew members on race day. If I go by the old assumption that the average weight per crew member is roughly 150 lbs. The numbers seem to check out. A half-tonner would then have a crew of five to seven members. Does this make any sense to you?

Sure does. One many boats it had to do with crew weight. We should do an episode on this and see if we can find and old timer that was involved back in the 70s!

No such thing as a stupid question 😊 - if you notice the stands are under the bottom- where I painted with black ablative paint- you can sort of get under them- very carefully! 😎

I scraped then sanded 20 years of hard blue bottom paint off a mid '80s 36 ft boat. My shoulders ached. Watching the first part of your video the pain came back. With the top sides: and then some. It is a big job.
