I painted my barbell!

There are a few ways to restore your barbell, and this method is one of the quickest because it doesn't require soaking over time.
Step 0: Remove surface rust (if there is any) with a wire brush
Step 1: Apply Rust Dissolver (I used one by Rust-Oleum: amzn.to/3woTbhh)
Step 2: Wash product off with soap & water then dry well
Note: You can stop here for a bare steel bar and maintain it
Step 3: Cover with rust reformer (I used Rust-Oleum Rust Reformer: amzn.to/3XRY9hZ)
Step 4: Finish with your choice of paint (I used Rust-Oleum 2X Flat Black: amzn.to/3DdzTPs)
I did note at the end that if I were to do this again I wouldn't paint over the sleeves because they experience too much friction and will strip this cheap paint method.
I also restored my iron plates in a quick, inexpensive way. You can check out that video here: • Easy Iron Weight Plate...
Let me know in the comments if you have any questions and/or if you've restored your barbell.

Present sir ! 💕
How is the bar holding up? I have a chrome plated bar that’s in really bad shape since it’s been outside. Ideally I’d like to get rid of it.
Thanks for putting up a vid like this bro. I can imagine the sleeves color won't hold up as weel as the bar imo as well. Looks sick for sure.

Thanks! The bar looks exactly the same as it did the first day I finished painting. The sleeves I’ve touched up maybe 2 or 3 times since and it’s a quick spritz and done. Super fast and holds for a while. The big thing for me was preventing anymore rust which I’m happy to say I’ve achieved.
definitely appreciate you going against the grain cuz when I looked up info everyone recommended not painting it over. was the knurling affected at all? pretty sure that's the biggest factor for me

Thank you! Same, I watched lots of videos to see what other have or haven’t done. After a few months of use, it’s still black haha. The knurling felt the same to me before and after painting. I was careful to do multiple thin coats of paint rather than fewer thicker coats because that risks build up especially in crevasses and grooves (like knurls).
Can you post an updated photo of the barbell?

Yup! Will make a community post tomorrow showing its current state.
Hmmm... Water is NOT good inside the collars! The bearings would rust and get all clogged. Aside from this, the long term follow-up would be interesting to see how the paint held up. Great work removing all the corrosion though!
Thanks for the video. Any idea why they dont recommend painting the bar. My home gym is outside and im thinking of painting my rogue eco bar.

You’re welcome! Hmm probably just a durability/experience thing. No paint we can buy/apply will match a factory finish. They likely want you to pay for their finish options and have the best look and quality. I not only enjoy the diy process but as you saw I bought the bar used and it was in rough shape.
So couple months in, is it still black? Does the black match rogue like equipment or not really? Oh and, how many times did you paint it?

I recently posted a short talking about how the paint is holding up. Yes, still black. There was the slightest show through of the steel in a few spots as a result of heavy scuffing from deadlifts. All I needed to do was the quickest spray of paint and it’s covered again. Originally, I did two light coats of the rust reform paint followed by two light coats of the flat black spray. I didn’t have any black rogue equipment to reference the color to - I just chose a finish I really liked. I’m sure you could find a can of paint that’s very close especially when dealing with blacks.
How is it holding up? I’m about to restore a hex bar

Doing great! I just have to touch up the sleeves every few months, but the shaft looks like new. More importantly there’s no more rusting (as it was in rough shape when I got it).
How did it go I want gold?

Great! I only need to touch it up every few months but it takes seconds to do.
Is that stuff environmentally friendly?

No. There are other methods you can use to get rid of deep rust without chemicals, if that’s a concern. There’s always a way!
