Theres something beautiful how Tenma is written here. The usual astro boy stuff happens. Once Atom dies, he goes back and claims he's saying goodbye. But he knows Tobio truly is dead in the process he learned Atom is his own being and had started to love him to a degree. Accepting this he saves Atom, but this doesn't inherently make him good, there's still a nuance that still makes him a terrible father and questionable scientist but still a father who loved his Son and had started to grow fond of Atom He's pretty much Gendo Ikari before Gendo Ikari. Even the way his eyes look are reminiscent of Gendo. This doesn't re-write, re-invent Tenma but rather expand on who Tenma originally is as a person.

I will say with this studio's art style and even the manga itself give Tenma Gendo vibes, especially the glasses and the coloring of the lenses

Plus, Mike Pollock (Dr. Eggman!) voices Dr. Ochanomizu here, ironically enough. The voice of one of pop culture's most famously evil roboticists now voicing one of its most benevolent. ...whoever was in charge of Pluto's casting deserves a raise.

When you’re crazy enough to scare *DR. EGGMAN* with your (mis)treatment of robots, you know you’re a goddamn psycho. Bravo to Keith David and Mike Pollock for their performances in Pluto.

After watching the 2003 series I was feeling this Tenma wasn’t nearly as unhinged as the 2003 Tenma. Then this scene happens.

If Netflix were to redub the entire 80’s Astro boy anime, Keith David (Spawn) would be the perfect actor to portray Dr Tenma.

This scene shows a much more complex side to Tenma, one that is more human and relatable than before. He isn’t a monster or scheming villain here, but a broken man who has faced the unthinkable not only once, but twice. His storyline is basically a story about complicated or prolonged grief and trauma, & how one can be consumed by it and deal with said grief and trauma in an unhealthy way. He’s a broken man, a man who was dealt a horrible hand in life because of what happened to his son. First, he loses his kid Tobio to a terrible accident, and refuses to believe that he is dead. No parent should ever have to bury their child. He builds a whole robot resembling his dead son, out of his unimaginable grief, in the mistaken belief that he can have his son back and that he can be a dad again. Thing is though, you can never bring back the dead, even if they are robots. He expected Atom to fulfill the deep hole in his heart that was left behind when he lost Tobio-only to then find out that Atom isn’t Tobio, but a being with a personality of his own. Unable to deal with such a change and consumed by his grief, he essentially abandoned Atom, essentially rejecting his own son, who desperately wants to be loved and told so. Now, he’s just lost his son, again, and now he has to face the unthinkable yet again. He probably had some time to think about and reflect on it, and now he feels awful that he failed to live up to his expectations as a dad-realizing how terrible he was to Atom and deeply regretting his rejection of Atom, and wishing more than ever that he could take back all the mistakes of time and right the wrongs again. He desperately longs to reconnect with his kid, maybe even wants to go join him in heaven. Keith David just gives off the best performance, brilliant acting and writing. In his performance, you can see how tired, grief stricken devastated, and broken of a man Tenma is, turned into a shell of what he once was because he went through something that no human being should ever have to go through, and he now has through with it again.
