I see people saying that the cedi is stronger than the rand. It doesn’t quite work that way. If you are doing international trade the currency you want in all of Africa is probably going to be the rand. Despite its problems (cough- load shedding) South Africa’s currency is unfortunately undervalued. The ANC has not done a great job with the things that I think are easier to fix. Like building and upgrading a power grid that fits the entire country. Like the pula the cedi trades higher than the rand against other currencies however South Africa has the better economy so that almost doesn’t matter. What’s messed up is that given South Africa’s positives (infrastructure - health education, Internet and rail/roads), the fact it makes and consumes more of its goods and services the country should be in a lot better shape. It’s rather frustrating to see a country that could be much better not be. Sorry but I gotta get political here, stop voting for the ANC that’s problem one and income inequality/wealth distribution (a hangover from the apartheid era) also distorts the nation’s economy.

The rand is undervalued not because of the ANC or anything that happens in the country but international speculation rather.

Cedi is stronger than rand but remember Cedi was as a result of currency denomination where 4 zeros were removed. It is an artificial economic measure to counter hyperinflation but it is not sustainable if the conditions that caused the issue persist. The denomination was done by Zambia as well. All these currencies that are said to be stronger than rand are due to currency denomination.

Currently - C1 = R1,58 Rand is a little wicker compared to Ghana Cedi but the Cedi has lost a lot of weight since 2019, Cedi used to be C1 = R2,60 or more, I remember because I wanted to go to Ghana in December 2019.

You can’t have a 1:1 comparison. I think in Ghana you guys revalued your money by cutting 4 zeroes off of your currency so for example R100 might be equivalent to 1000 cedis or less(just an estimation)

Mathematically it doesn’t make sense; if Ghana Cedes is more than the SA Rand then what it means is that a Ghanaian buying your merchandise should not feel like it’s too much to pay you in Rands because, it means they can use their Cedes to buy a lot of Rands and send you the Rands you need and still have change. As you said 1 Cedes is 3x R1.00; what this means is that R100 Cedes can buy them R300 which will allow them to send you the R100 and still have R200 back in Ghana!
