I NEVER expected to find a mulloway / jew fish spearfishing here

Are some spots bad or was I just a bad diver when I dived them? Sometimes you go diving and it seems you see nothing but we all have that one mate who will always pull a fish out of a seemingly dead spot. Perhaps these spots aren't bad, we can just improve on our spearfishing and may be worth a visit again. This video shows how when I went back to one of these 'bad' spots I got a surprise!
Let me know in the comments if you have gone back to spots years later and had success.
Also for those watching around the world, similar species would be:
USA - White sea bass
Mediterranean - Corvina or Ombria
South Africa - Kob or Daga Salmon

    More, more, MORE please ! Another excellent story supported with QUALITY action footage. Love your work Daniel - it sets the standard. The jewie cyclones had my palms sweating. I found a similar story going back to the places I started chasing jewies, bass and XOS flathead as a kid. Right conditions, tides, weather, time of day, (line/leader/bait/lures) etc are often the key that unlocks the results - experience makes all the difference. Funny how there was just one large jewie under that log in the Tweed. It didn't even twitch when you shot it made me think it was a joke at first and you'd picked it up offshore, but you hit it in the sweet spot - perfect placement. Have you seen many big jewies like that all on their own ? ? ? ? Do you remember if it was injured, or just a lone fish?

  • @DanielMann

    @DanielMann

    6 жыл бұрын

    The vortexes certainly make it hard to hold your breath that’s for sure. I think the fish may have been sick or injured internally with a hook perhaps as it was really skinny for its length and head size. A still target makes it easy to aim for the kill shot. They get them in the Tweed every now and then. There was a guy in the Tweed club who shot one 24kg under one of the bridges a long time ago. I also saw a young guy shoot one 20kg in the river about two weeks ago.

  • @DanielMann

    Generally if you don’t kill it outright with the shot a swift knife to the brain will finish them. Not just anywhere in the head though, you have to know where the brain is.

    Through the eyes into the brain isn’t that effective on lots of fish, especially if they are big. Draw an equilateral triangle from the eyes backwards towards the tail of the fish on top and that’s probably the best spot to find the brain.

    Why did you not shoot that grouper and went for the mulloway. I have been living in the Mediterranean my whole life and i dont know anything about mulloways. Are they better tasting orbmore prized than groupers. Here groupers are some of the most prized fish. Looking forward to your mediterranean video.

  • @DanielMann

    @DanielMann

    6 жыл бұрын

    There are many groupers or as well call them in Australia ‘cod’ where we dive. Very easy to spear and when big they can get a bit chewy. Much different behaviour to the Mediterranean grouper from what I have seen in videos. There is one species we get called a purple cod which can be very difficult to spear when they get big but other than that all quite easy targets. To be honest a 10kg cod would taste better for me than a 10kg mulloway, I just like to spread my target species out a bit.

    Hey Daniel, that's true! Happened to me in a place in my hometown in the south of Lima Peru, with a huge school of Peruvian Grunt, which are not huge but super hard to catch (they live in the most impossible rough spots) and are really good eating (check the first scene at kzread.info/dash/bejne/mnh21tiafqSeh6g.html). But the other reality is that every place has a natural variability and randomness. Some times even fish that are territorial move along a variety of spots and you may find them or not in a certain place. I'd say a good spot is one that holds higher odds of becoming a shelter or feeding ground, and sometimes you just have to check them out several times before actually finding the same schools again, even with conditions alike!

    "Shameteurs" or simply people who sell recreational catch illegally exist throughout Europe and the world. I am not one of them nor would I ever want to be. In saying that, they are exceptional divers because they are in the water every day making a living from it.

    Not white sea bass. You might want to correct that info. WSB is the giant Pacific Croaker. No relation to bass .

  • @DanielMann

    @DanielMann

    Hence why the description says SIMILAR species. These are quite similar to the White Sea bass found in California. Bass is also the most loosely used term in fish naming conventions ever. It could mean anything.
