I've got a little Duratool soldering station and I'm very happy with it. The base is a lot smaller than most, no temperature display but the cradle is detachable which is nice. I still may have to pick one of these up if they do a 240V version though. It's amazing value considering it comes as a complete kit with a carrying case containing a stand, tools, solder and everything.

I've got the same iron, mine came in a mini plastic tool box instead of the case. Mine is branded as a Vastar AC222. I love that little, easy to use iron! It works great! Had it a couple of years, and it works as good today as the day I got it. Thanks for the video!

another good option would be those tiny hakko t12 compatible station (kits) that they make now. Some of them are tiny, and can be had for 20 bucks or so as well. Of course in your case, you'd have the same problem as with the ts100, the shipping time. If you search for "quicko mini aliexpress", you'll find what i mean, but the same kit is also available from other "brands"

I've had a couple of these (the first one got lost) and I've been happy with it. As someone who's been doing electronics since the late 70's I've soldered a joint or two, and this iron is pretty good. The bits that came with it were junk and eroded away quite quickly, but as you point out it takes standard 900M bits and cheap replacements have lasted well. I've used mine to build several replica computers, thousands of joints, and its done the job really well. The only real thing to watch is that its easy to knock the dial and change the temperature, if it gets too hot you'll start lifting pads on PCBs, so just keep an eye on that. It's not as good as a proper temperature controlled station, but its an order of magnitude better than the thermal balance type and pretty much the same price. I'd definitely recommend getting one of these even if its just to sit in your bag as a backup, or for your portable kit. The fact that it likely uses the same bits as your "good" iron means you're not going to need to buy extra spates for it. I've used mine for through-hole and SMD devices. If you're doing truly tiny SMD work you might need the extra control a more expensive iron gives, but for general hobbyst use its a good cheap iron.

It's not temperature controlled, it's just thyristor power controlled with no feedback at all. And it thus tends to have a bit of thermal runaway, which is why it seemed to perform "better" in a very short test. I petition learnelectronics should open it and eat his words about it being high-tech and them stuffing all the things you'll find in a regular soldering station in there. That being said, there's a similar looking soldering iron that is made of clear plastic, with a just very slightly thicker handle, a couple visible trimpots and distinctly indicating LEDs, that does have proper and working temperature control, with again thyristor based switching.

I sometimes need to take the back off a watch too :) "Good" bits aren't just copper these days, they laminate various metals in this case to keep costs down it's probably soft copper which with the exception of the tip is then coated (PTFE or some other heatproof protection). Cheaper than treating the whole thing!!! www.newark.com/pdfs/techarticles/oki-metcal/extendingTipLife.pdf I always used to carry a rechargeable soldering Iron I'd made myself. The bits were a fraction of the price of the "real" iron. For a project The fancy irons used with the solder stations are only 24v ... at a pinch they'll work with a "standard" drill battery pack. Failing that a powerbank and a £2 fleabay adjustable dc-dc booster will provide the required juice. You can't play all day - but batteries do make you self sufficient for those odd occasions where power isn't available. I've been refused access a couple of times in hospital cardiology depts where they don't allow anything "foreign" on their supplies.

Just came in a clear plastic sleeve branded "Vastar" with a large tube of really good solder and extra tips etc. I never expected it to be so good as its just a wall plug iron, looks just like the iron youre showing here with same tips etc. After re-watching your vids on the zeny solder station I found one on sale for $27 also from California and ordered it, seems like a bargain at that price.

i picked up a very similar kit. www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B071XJLGK9/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 have to say im pleased with the iron its self, wait for heat is a bit longer then a station but its pretty good as it goes. the rest is nice to have other spare bits available. all in, getting the iron, pump and a case to keep your other bits aint bad for the price. the stand is rubbish tho haha

These irons are great, but the tips that come with them are garbage! If you're a novice at soldering and get one of these irons, and solder just doesn't seem to flow properly, and its hard to even tin the tip anymore after even 10 minutes use, it's not you! Get some better quality tips (they can still be cheap ones from china, the ones it comes with are just especially bad) and this iron will serve you well for many years :D
