I was just about to go with Cosori because of your other videos. I went to the Excalibur website to look at the older 9 tray (out of stock) before I found your channel and there were several reviews saying their customer service is absolutely terrible, most people saying they can't even get a hold of them or can't get a call back. Customer service is very important to me..have you had that experience with them? I need to decide quickly which one I want, I just went raw vegan and in order to maintain I'm gonna need to make raw crackers, wraps, "breads", kale chips and raw vegan "burgers" looks like this one might be the best choice? Do you have a link for silicone sheets or will any on Amazon do? Just a tad worried my cat will sit on the top and break the glass, bit anyways please let me know about the customer service. And I just noticed your code expired?😔 aw man, they should have gave you that doesn't expire. Do you have a new one?🙏

I love my Cosori, that I purchased largely based on your recommendation. I also love my big old nine-tray Excalibur. And I’m still reasonably fond of my first dehydrator, a round Nesco with extra trays. Not kicking any of my workhorses to the curb 😁

i have one nesco with 32 trays that is over 40 years old and still going strong! but, i bought three more of those, and ALL THREE MELTED DOWN, and one STARTED ON FIRE!! lucky it didnt burn the house down!! that's when i bought my Septrees. but i do still use that old Nesco in season!

I’m sure this Excalibur works great but I love my Cosori very much and is perfect for me!!

I've been laying my plastic sheets on my veggies to keep from blowing around, works like a charm.

I have an old plastic excalibur dehydrator. It is the first and only dehydrator I have ever used. It is only 5 trays. I actually bought it at Ollie's a couple years ago for only $60. I was so excited. I do not dehydrate a lot of food yet. I dehydrated celery last week and loved saving my celery. Use what you have until it doesn't work for you any longer. We are trying to save money not spend money unnecessarily. Have a Blessed Week.

Wow! I have just got to get me one of these! My old Nabisco gave me 7 good years but now it’s way over heating my potato’s looked over cooked yet went back to looking normal when cooking but yuk I don’t want to chance once my harvest is coming in that I want to dehydrate, plus hubby is requesting jerky . This is a nice looking machine and I like that door. I have the 9 tray Excalibur that I should use way more than I do. I bought three greenstalk vertical planters so crossing my fingers that I’ll have a lot of produce to preserve in a few months.

Cosori has that reputation, bad. Check to make sure it's not the fuse that needs to be replaced. That's a lot cheaper of a fix than a new machine.

I love my old Excalibur with the dial and glass door even though you have to set the door on or take it off. My Excalibur is so much better than any other brand or configuration I have had, especially the kind with round, stackable trays. If I needed a new dehydrator, I would be hard pressed not to buy another old-school, 2 dial Excalibur, even with the crazy door.

It’s not fancy but it works great! 5 trays, black plastic door that sides on in front with the fan inside. Also have a consori that my younger sister gifted me ( I love it because I can set the time and temp, but I would never get rid of my first dehydrator! I’ve even made yogurt in my old one ❤️)

Darcy, literally signed on in order to check out the prices on a new Cosori, as I finally played TAPS for my old round Nesco. I have one of the old Excalibur square 5 tray that is still kicking it and outperforming both the Nesco and my 5 tray oval Cuisinart. Must do some thinking on this. Also, thanks for sharing the discount link, just in case...

I like the expanded lower temp range and the metal trays! If my big ole Excalibur ever fails, I’ll get this one! Or maybe I’ll get one for myself for my birthday. Thanks!

LOL If it fit my dryer space, I'd likely still be using mine indoors, too, but when we had to replace the dryer, it no longer fit, so it's relegated to the garage.

Love the review and I'm glad you like it! I have two 9 tray Excaliburs and personally I'm happy with them. There are some features on this (that top glass in particular) that would be nice, but I don't like digital anything. I prefer manual controls and purchase things with that option when possible. Went thru a phase where I wanted everything digital, but found that they tend to go wonky at the most inconvenient time, and the repairs are generally as costly as just buying a replacement. Yes, it is more likely for large appliances, but it is an issue. When you live where power outages are frequent, or power surges are fairly common, that becomes even more of a determining factor. For us it was lightening strikes (we lived on top of a sand hill), and one strike cost us every electronic in the home ~ and all of our neighbors had the same problem. I went full manual on everything at that point (stove, frig, countertop appliances, phones, etc. ... and the computers went on a rather expensive-but-worth-it backup system). That was a costly mess for people on a fixed/retired income. Insurance was useless btw. And ~ the single thing I did not have to replace WAS my Excalibur even though it was running at the time of the lightening strike.

I have a 23 year old 9-tray Excalibur that has been well used. I'm just waiting for it to die on me! I'm starting to look around at other options for when that happens. I am really happy with Excalibur, so this is at the top of my list of potential candidates. Thank you! 🌷 Michele

I have an older 9 tray Excalibur and it’s great but I would love to get this! It addresses most of the things that I’m not crazy about with my current model. I like the tip about putting the mesh screen on the top of the tray to help with clearance. I will be putting this on my wishlist.

Yep - the mesh thing was a game changer when I figured out how to make it work with my old machine - and it works with other machines with low-clearance, too!

THAT WINDOW IS COOL, all of them should have that, otherwise mine thats not a big brand has 12 shelves and i love it, its a workhorse...oddly you cant get them anymore!

I’ve got a double door Excalibur many trays , haven’t used yet brand new . Also the 9 and 6 tray ones. Work like a charm. Never ever an issue. Less than $500 for all three. Last two over 5 years old work horses. Love them but wanted this one cause double doors. lol always wait for deals. Your site rocks but I like old faith ones. Can count on them ❤

My original 9 tray is at least 10 years old and works great. It's just so big for where I can put it I have to have something else in here for everyday use. Thus it's now the garage machine for overflow work.

Thank you for your very informative video! I live in a 2-person (vegan) household and am considering purchasing a dehydrator for the first time. Reviews I’ve read all seem to recommend the 9-tray version, but I’m thinking your 6-tray version may be more appropriate for my household. Any advice on how to determine which (number of trays) version to select?

i purchased a kwasyo dehydrator 12 stainless steel tray for 150 dollars and have had very good luck with it just as good or better than top brand names and alot cheaper also i needed one with alot of trays i do like the one you got just to exspensive and not many trays

i bough several Septree dH...i loved them that much. the only issues are: 1. the timer is limited to 24 hours max, which i really dislike, and 3. they are 1500 watts, so i have to have them all over the house to be on different circuits. maybe someday i will be able to fix that one. and i am green that that one is 80 hour timer!! many of my runs are longer than the 24 hours, and if i dont remember to reset.....there you are.otherwise, my Septrees are great, but again, it doesnt really matter which you end up buying, theres ALWAYS a newer one coming out!!

You still have the handwash the stainless trays if you get something on them. The way the mesh on it is created (as with most stainless steel trays) things can easily stick to it and it's hard to get off sometimes. And if you have a small sink - then even harder. SUre - you can put these into the dishwasher if you have one tall enough to fit them, but if stuff is truly stuck on, even the dishwasher isn't going to remove it.

I use Shout (laundry enzyme spot treatment) for cleaning stuff stuck on my trays. Towel on the counter, tray(s) on the towel, spray. The gunk will usually soften in a few minutes and easily wash off (a soft brush is helpful). Works for lots of hard to clean issues in the kitchen. Thank you Darcy! ❤🙏

If I told the whole story, you would understand. But yes, it may have been a little harsh, but the truth. I have stuck by this company for almost 4 years. It is not like it hasn't been a great machine until it wasn't and the company did not do right to fix issues that are more than just the machine. It is also why I said if you are happy with whatever machine you have...great!

I have been thinking about getting a dedicated dehydrator. Up until now I’ve used my instant pot air fryer, which has a dehydrating mode, but your videos have inspired me to expand. My kitchen space is very limited so I’m looking for something that I can use out on my screened porch (I live in south FL). Would this be appropriate for that setting? Not in the weather if you were going to leave it out there all the time. I'd use a Nesco stackable plastic one.

Thanks for the great review. I am trying to decide between this model and the 6 tray select model. The performance differences seem to be the two stage temp setting and the countdown display lights. Does the digital display also show the time left or is it just the progress lights that let you know how much time is left? (Although I know you always tell us not to pay attention to the time 😉). A Nesco stackable. But with all of them - read the manuals to make sure you can use it outside. Not all would be appropriate.

I’m in Georgia and have the same issue. If you dehydrate when it’s humid it can take a really long time or increased temperature but things will dry eventually. Definitely use food safe moisture absorbers (silica) when you are storing your dehydrated food.

Hi Darcy, after watching a lot of your video, I decided to buy a dehydrator! I was wondering for a 4 members family, should I buy a 6 tray or a 10 tray, in your opinion?

The family member number wouldn't be something I'd be concerned about. It's more - do you have a large garden that you're trying to preserve or do you plan on purchasing? Are you trying to just do snacks, or are you trying to build out a dry pantry? That is more of what I'd think about for sizing. A six tray (or 5 tray with the Cosori) has worked well for us unless I had some big purchase I did or we were in the middle of harvest season, even in our small garden, and I was thankful to have a backup dehydrator or two.

Could you tell me what sealer would be good for wide mouth or small mouth jars

I'm curious if you have an opinion about this dehydrator? I found it on Amazon. Its a Tiastar 10 tray stainless steel 72 hour timer. Its 1100 watts and comes with enough mesh screens for every shelf and 4 fruit leather trays.

We have ours in a closet and if I've been running it for long periods of time without opening it, you do notice it one the doors open. It produces heat to dry, so yes, it puts off heat. But I have never noticed that our room was any hotter when I used to run it in the kitchen. If you were near the machine you might notice, but I didn't notice the whole room changing.

Which is quieter - cosori or this Excalibur?

Is this the select or the performance model ?

I have a line on an Excalibur EXC10, do you have any experience with that model? It's their semi-commercial model.

the timer is automatic at 8 hours - you have to adjust it to what you want. But it goes up to 80 hrs.

How does this excalibur compare with the Sahara that you have also used?

All dehydrators are basically the same. The Sahara has an air-only feature which is pretty unique to them, and while it looks like it might be flimsy - it's not. It's wider than this machine, which means I can't keep it up permanently, and it is a bit of a hassle to pull out and put back up when not in use, it's a great machine, too.

I know you have reviews. But is it time to do a favorite 3 dehydrators and why?

I don't really have favorites. They all have their pros and cons and my personal preferences. I'll use this one until it dies. The 3900 Excalibur (black plastic model) is a great machine - it's just too large for my main workspace, so it's my overflow machine.

Do these run up your electricity very much?

It's an electrical appliance, so yes it does use energy. It costs about $1/day to run it for 24 hours, generally. But it's purposeful use of energy to put food up for my family, to stop food waste, etc. It's not like the tv is on just running. The per day cost will differ based on your local utility rates.

It looks like there's a slight opening on the sides of the door that would let heat escape . ??

I explained the gap - it's there for a reason - the same reason that you have vent holes in a Cosori.

@thepurposefulpantry Could you share how tall the interior is? I'm wondering what size jars could fit to make yogurt in this one or if a 10-tray would be better for taller jars. I tried reaching out to Excalibur and they couldn't tell me the interior dimensions. 😕

You can fit quart jars on the bottom rack, but not half gallon jars

Quarts just fit. Anything bigger won't, and I can't get in to measure it right now.

I've never used the Magic Mill, so I can't compare.

Looks like a good one. How big are the trays, 14"x14"? I'll definitely need some silicone trays with a lip on them, lol, best to get ones that fit. Thanks.

Sure it is. Not for 25 years, no. But for 2-3+ years, depending on the food, it is.

the inside looks like metal. is it metal or plastic? I will not purchase anything that heats up plastic.

My only concern is that Excalibur's support has gone to the curb. I have the discontinued 5-tray. unit, which I have loved and used for more than 10 years. It no longer starts (most likely outlet or power issues at home). After four hours of going thru pointless troubleshooting scripts and long waits with low-information support staff, I still have no resolution, no access to the wizards who freely helped customers a few years ago. My unit fits in the mid level of a microwave cart and takes up ZERO counter space. I could dry food in it anytime I wanted, no hassle. I am unwilling to redesign my kitchen to accommodate a counter-top unit. I wanted Excalibur to sell me a replacement board or just the components, but the phone people cannot go offscript. The company has fallen from their pedestal IMHO. I would suggest that the quality of tech support be reviewed before considering any purchase that might need occasional help.

Sorry - I can't rearrange my kitchen at all - nor do I have space for a cart - thus mine sits on my dryer. :D I didn't have trouble with their support with the first one of these I purchased, and they replaced it immediately. But I didn't try to fix an old, discontinued model.

Thank you for your very informative video! I live in a 2-person (vegan) household and am considering purchasing a dehydrator for the first time. Reviews I’ve read all seem to recommend the 9-tray version, but I’m thinking your 6-tray version may be more appropriate for my household. Any advice on how to determine which (number of trays) version to select?

No, unfortunately - the larger the machine, the more you can do. If you are planning on having a large garden to preserve or want to really stock your pantry, a larger machine works better. If you are simply looking to create snacks and occasional dishes (vegan wraps, crackers, etc.) a smaller one will be fine.
