    In aviation, we etch and Alodine aluminum prior to paint to protect the metal. We thoroughly clean the surface, we do not sand. Sanding removes the pure aluminum facing on the sheet metal that is naturally corrosion resistant.

  • @Skinflaps_Meatslapper

    @Skinflaps_Meatslapper

    2 жыл бұрын

    Aerospace is about the only widespread application for alclad, and you definitely don't want to sand it. That's why there's so many "aircraft paint remover" products out there, it's the only safe way to remove paint from aircraft so it has to do the job. I dunno if you watch Mike Patey's channel, but while he was building his cub, he sanded the alclad to "give it an etch" for paint and sealers to adhere to, even inside the fuel tanks of all places. For all the great work he does, to see him doing that really melted my brain. I don't care what you put over it, you just don't do that to alclad.

    Another reason I love your channel Robby: I learn something new every time. Here I thought having the color code was the only way to ensure you have it correct to match. Who came up with the variance options? What a curveball. Does that apply to different materials to ensure the colors is accurate? I spied Papa Dar's Knapheide Service bed being painted. I used to think that the guys at Kingdig Custom were the best vehicle painters in the world, but I have never seen them do the wax & grease or blow tac and static steps, and I don't remember them starting with an epoxy coat either. They certainly don't put as much work into their prep as Robby does either. So I am now certain sure that Robby Layton is officially the best vehicle painter in the world.

    You DO realize they don't show EVERY step they take on TV right? I agree Robby is the best, but neither shows EVERYTHING. One KZread channel was accosted for not greasing a rebuilt machine. First, it was a mock up assembly, and second, if you don't know how to grease stuff, maybe watching a video on rebuilding a machine on KZread, isn't how you should be spending your time.

    @@haroldphipps3457 But having seen a LOT of episodes, you would think the entire process would be revealed by a sort of law of averages. Kingdig has also repeatedly made the point of not touching bear metal with an un-gloved hand. I started my working life as a toolmaker at Ford UK Product development finishing as a design engineer, so I have a reasonable idea how stuff works. ;-)

    A paint code that really irritates me is the “Radar Blue Metallic” for a 1994 Chevy S-10. The body shop that painted, repainted, and continued to repaint my aftermarket hood until finally giving up and telling me I’d have to pay to repaint my whole truck to get it to match left a sour memory. My truck was a real pretty blue, but would shift to purple when it was clean and the sun would hit it just right. The hood kept coming out people and would shift to blue in the right light. 20 years later, and seeing several other trucks with the factory color, and I learned that my truck had already been repainted once… the hood was the color the truck should have been all along.
