09’s the crew that beat Spain At their highest.
That was absolutely fascinating and great that you did this. A couple of general comments. First, most national teams that aren't in the top 5 or top 10 in the world would have a hard time cementing a European place in the EPL. Croatia and Uruguay, for example would be unlikely to be relegated but finishing better than 7th? It would be hard. We need to keep in mind that the top club teams in the EPL are effectively "all star" teams of national team players to begin with. Second, teams from 10 to 20, like us, would certainly struggle. Mexico in its current form would be a bottom table performer and have to work hard to stay up, and Switzerland and Denmark would be relegation candidates. Third, coaching matters, but the quality of players -- and above all, depth -- matters more, much more. To compete in the EPL and keep afloat across all competitions you need 28 players and an academy that can spit out one or two youngsters every year than can step in at a moment's notice. And to finish top 4, you'd better have two to three truly GREAT players, especially great SCORERS. For the also rans, a good manager can get the best out of what you have, but a league manager can pick the players to fit the system. A national team coach does not have that luxury, and he must use a system to fit the players. This inability, at least so far, on the part of GGG to do that is his greatest shortcoming. The lumbering possession style he likes simply does not serve us well given our tremendous advantage in speed and athleticism. That's why it is interesting that Arteta and Pep were the best performers, -- Arteta especially. Arsenal was on its way to a tie against Brighton and then --- bam!! -- counters on the break and it was lights out. That's how we should play with Weah, Pulisic, Balaogu, Pepi, Reyna. Run right at the opposition when the ball is won. It's so obvious, it smacks you in the face.
@ItsCalledSoccer
7 ай бұрын
That was definitely interesting to me too, that if we're true to ourselves... Arteta and Pep's STYLE is not that far off from what Gregg is trying to implement. It's just the way they are able to galvanize their squad and make their players better every day. That plus a gap in understanding the tactics... but still. The way they were playing weren't so different.

Remember these games in no way reflect the real game in real time. Regardless of manager I think with the players at their disposal the USMNT would seriously struggle in the EPL. The money is such in the EPL that even mid/low table teams have really really good players that would play for top sides in most other leagues. This is why there is talk and movement on a European super league because its starting to get to a point where the money is making it near impossible for alot of top European clubs to compete with what would be historically mediocre English teams and the European clubs would dwarf them in every aspect bar money
imo, irl around 12th-14th would be a very good showing. lol, like you found out, we don't have depth once our top players get hurt, and in the an EPL season, multiple injuries are *guaranteed* ...just ask newcastle!

Columbus Crew fan. Nancy and Berhalter are very close in coaching philosophies and differ really only in their preferred system. At present, I can't rank one over the other. I'm just happy to have a good coach I can trust back managing the team. They have the same strengths as teaching coaches, talent evaluation, and tactical coaches, but they also have the same problems within game management. If anything, I think Nancy would frustrate the US fans even more than Berhalter, as his in game management is basically "don't make subs unless you absolutely have to" and he's even more of a system coach that doesn't adjust than Berhalter.

@_Jake.From.Statefarm_

You might be right if it was that simple but the US does have many coaches and players from all around the world. A lot of club coaches 20+ years ago when I played were from the UK. It was just really expensive during that time period and there wasn't exactly a logistical way to go pro unless you knew someone or got a good scholarship and scouts were always tied to high paying clubs, and within that, parents who would pay good money to see their kids succeed.

Interesting ... although a study of just 1 season for each manager kind of undermines the results a bit. I mean, yes it is interesting how each one set up, but their final position is somewhat of a lottery. If you had used Berhalter over 10 seasons, seen his highest and lowest position, and then Pep or whoever over 10 seasons and seen his highest or lowest position it would be interesting to see how much it really effects the results. Of course, you would need a LOT of time to do each manager over 10 seasons, lol

5-3-2 would be an interesting formation for USMNT to play but we would be hard pressed to find scoring opportunities with such a defensive formation. Our biggest problem is the lack depth and high quality players that can finish the few opportunities we have like a Harry Kane and play makers/quality attackers that make smart runs to create chances on and off the ball. Playing a quick counter attack style instead of possession would give us way better results then GGG's tactics however we need to sort out our defense first, we lose the ball deep on our half of the field way too often over bad passes/mistakes that can be avoided

I picked a 25-man squad, with: (in order of apps) GK: Matt Turner, Ethan Horvath, Gabriel Slonina DF: Chris Richards, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Tim Ream, Antonee Robinson, Miles Robinson, Sergino Dest, Walker Zimmerman, Joe Scally MF: Yunus Musah, Christian Pulisic, Tyler Adams, Mark Tillman, Gio Reyna, Luca De La Torre, Weston McKennie, Johnny, Alan Sonora, Timothy Weah, Brenden Aaronson FW: Folarin Balogun, Haji Wright, Ricardo Pepi Stats: 38 games, 18W-9D-11L, 65-54(+11), 63 pts. 7th pos. Biggest win: Fulham(H), Luton(A) (4 - 1) Biggest lost: Liverpool(A) (1 - 5) Top scorer: Balogun (32(2)Apps, 14G/3A) Top Assister: De La Torre (23(14)Apps, 4G/11A) Top goal contributor: Tillman (26(10)Apps, 9G/8A) I started with a 3-2-2-3 formation at the beginning of the season; it defended well but failed to bring the ball to the final third, which often led to being punished by a late equaliser. I switched the formation to 3-1-2-3-1 (or 3-3-3-1 DM Wide called in-game) to improve the offence after another lost game with a late goal against Aston Villa in mid-December. The idea behind my formations is slightly different. For the 3-2-2-3, I am inspired by Mourinho's Porto, with 3-2 as the defence unit and the front 3 as the attacking unit with 2 dynamic CM will join the attack. However, the Football Manager's match engine isn't perfect. It is challenging to balance avoiding opponent players cutting off the passes toward the wingers and being effective. So, I switched to 3-1-2-3-1, taking a DM off and putting an AM into the formation. This time, it is inspired by the famous unorthodox tactic of Iwata Jubilo in the 00s called N-Box. It is a formation with high fluidity. The closest player to the ball will rush out and try to win the ball back, and the teammate must cover their position. The two sides' centre back will stay wide to build up, with the centre-back and DM will form a diamond to keep possession. Those two CMs will join with both ends and are the bridges between attacking and defending players. The striker often drops back and makes some link-up play, while wingers and AM can search for pockets to take the chances. I might have gone too far with my gamer logic, so realism is absent in the results. (Like a 3-centre-back formation without using side-backs to cover the flank, using Haji Wright mainly as a winger/wide target man, etc.). I am not familiar with the USMNT players in real life, but I researched the players and have some thoughts. The current USMNT reminds me of Belgium's 2014 & 2018 World Cup squad in a way. Let's be honest: Hazard, De Bruyne and Courtois are one of their kind. I don't think even Pulisic can reach the height of Hazard, but there are many promising rising stars among American footballers can be a real force in the future if USMNT has a good coach. USMNT could be an overachiever in the 2026 WC, like Japan or Morocco in the 2022 WC. Preferred Formation: FW: Balogun (Pepi) AM+WG: Pulisic(H.Wright/Tillman) - Reyna(Covered by Pulisic/Tillman/Sonora) - Tillman(Weah/Dest/Aaronson) CM: De La Torre(Sonora) - Musah(McKennie) DM: Tyler Adams(Johnny) DF: A.Robinson(Tim Ream) - CCV(M.Robinson) - C.Richards(Scally) GK: Matt Turner (Ethan Horvath) Finally, I wish you a good 2024. Happy New Year.
@airynod
6 ай бұрын
P.S.: I picked a 3-back formation without side-backs because of my bias against modern attacking side-backs. While attacking ability like Dest's is a great add-on to the team, I prefer a solid defence than a "second winger". Pure gamer logic :) P.S.2: I still picked Antonee Robinson, Dest and Scally in the squad for the tactical versatility. I converted Antonee Robinson and Scally to a wide centre-back and Dest to a winger.
The simulation believed that Gregg would play... exactly the way Greggteams play.

This was fun. Two things: 1) Perhaps I missed it, but in what position did the Landau coached team finish? 2) I would love to see a part 2 with a few specific coaches. The most obvious based on global reputation would be Ancelotti. Also, is it possible to use retired legendary coaches like Sir Alex Ferguson? Two MLS names I'd love to see are Wilfried Nancy for his innovative tactics and Pat Noonan for his seemingly lack thereof, yet still overall effectiveness. Love the video, however, the most competitive league is the championship, not the premier league and as season one showed, USMNT would probably not get out of that league, as the Plymouth cup result highlighted. It is the same when people talk about Celtic and Rangers joining the English leagues. (Although starting with that as a premise wouldn’t make it a watchable video I guess?) Another example to evidence this is the length it took Haji Wright to adapt to playing for my team Coventry. Our manager has currently been using him on the left side of 4-3-3/4-5-1 and could be one of those players that, as his game develops (better press and providing assists) through being with us could be a player to have impact on the national team bench.

Truth be told, it’s nice to finally be able to play with possession and play out of the back. However, there’s another big truth out there. We don’t have the players to play that way against top ten World Cup competition. That being said, we absolutely NEED to be ready to sit back and counter and GGG refuses to do this against anybody. We had more big, surprising, signature wins using less talent and a smart play style than we’ve had with this group playing “modern”, highly tactical soccer. We are not going very far unless we admit we’ve still got to play as feisty underdogs in most games we play past the group stage in WC or even Copa.

Last season the USMNT team finished like 26th in minutes earned among nations in the Big 5 leagues of Europe. Before that we were like 28th. In 2017 we were 43rd. This year we are on pace to finish 20th. In the 2006/2007 season the USA was 19th in minutes earned among nations in the Big 5 leagues of Europe. So contrary to what people think, back when we were getting signature wins we had more talent than we do now. We are just now getting the level of talent that Bruce Arena or Bob Bradley had available to them. If only it was that simple. You can have the best coach or manager (or whatever you guys call him) in the world, but if he doesn't have talented players, with a lot of experience and that can adapt themselves to different positions in the field and that understand his tactits to the 'T', you're gonna go nowhere. That's the problem Mexico has been facing since... forever. They hire pretty good coaches, but once they're there, they find out really quickly that no matter how you talk to them or how you tell them to do their jobs, they simply don't have the talent required to win something outside of Concacaf.

Yeah I think our top end talent is good enough for 10-14th but there is a dropoff and then the big question if the manager can get the most out of them.

@@ItsCalledSoccer Well, one thing is certain, your football has progressed a lot in the last 5 years. Now you have many players abroad and in decent teams, and some of them in really good teams, so that will only help in the long run. More games outside of Concacaf with big national teams is what you need, getting out of your comfort zone and visit more "hostile" environments. Another BIG item for many national teams in Concacaf is that they're really naive to play, although that's changing really fast in some teams from what we see here. Cheers from Argentina.

@@Lucas_Tulic Hopefully copa america helps with this! Tough when Mexico, probably our best competition in concacaf, is in a bit of a rough spot right now. More competitions w/ conmebol teams should help improve our play as a national team! Friendlies help too obviously, but competitions seem better overall.

@@td7221 If you set your bar too low, like trying to get to Mexico's level, you will fail as they have in the world stage. Aspire to be like the best out there, and don't try to copy England, 'cause they suck in this sport! They have a great league, but only thanks to all the foreigners.
As an American this is painful to admit but..,The USMNT would struggle to stay out of relegation.

You never know if you gave them a few years. The biggest problem is that we don't have depth to mix and match.
Nice to see Americans are getting invoved now, and you seem passionate about football which is great. Just 1 thing tho, for example if the score is 2-0 it's said as "2 nil" & when its 2-2, that would be called a "Desmond" (after Desmond TUTU, the South African Anglican Bishop) Also any references London clubs like Arsenal is said like "arse-a-nal" and their fans are called "gooners" after the goonies. Chesea fans are just called "chavs" and West Ham fans are "Spammers" cause they love their Ham (Spam) & love rhyming things . That's how we say it in London N17 anyway. Other countries may differ.
How do you put a national team to play Club League?

I had to create a club and then build the roster
You didnt mention where the team ranked when you took the reins.

14th! Must have forgotten to put the slide card in :(
Whenever I think of a manager that cab turn a mediocre team in a menace I think of Bielsa. Can you test him? I think he would play with 3 attackers and high press

There will be a part 2!
Excuse me, am I seeing this right? Simulated Pep Guardiola got a midtable finish by using Gregg Berhalter’s lambasted inverted right back tactic?

That’s true. Maybe he was able to coach it better or motivate better or pick Richards over Adams or someone else.
Your team would struggle in EFL1 never mind the premier league
As a Celtic Fan I would have Carter-Vickers as a Starter but that’s just me

How can we be stopped?
I wouldn’t use Roy Hodgson as a basis for anything!
FIFA criminally underrated US players. Pulisic has been one of the best players for AC Milan and they have him at the same rating as Chukwueze

I agree but this was on football manager which tends to be a bit closer to real life.
