Living in Russia, and I always liked to watch Coaches Corner. Don loves hockey, he is sincere and honest about it. I didn't always agreed with him, but I didn't have to. His show was damn entertaining. Yeah, he is harsh on outsiders (which I personally don't mind), but he loves Canada. And, what, he was cancelled because loving his country is suddenly a bad thing? WTF? Also it was always funny, how Don butchered players names, like Lucic or Bieksa. Man, his show was a jewel. A diamond. A gold bar. I miss him. You all miss him too.

He isn't racist, it's just that any criticism of immigration in Canada offends urban sensibilities. He is a Canadian icon from a simpler time when skin colour was irrelevant. Coach's Corner was much better than what they replaced it with, that TV deal really ruined HNIC.

Pretty fucking hurtful when you and your family are "outsiders". A simple search will show you hes had a long history of racism and ignorant stances. Its not an excuse anymore to have grown up in a "different time". The thing people dont udnerstand is just because youre not bothered by something doesnt mean others arent. By letting someone like that continue on the air and give them a voice means you condone that behavior and that way of thinking is okay. Call me sensative, call me a "liberal", call me whatever. You have a problem with the way others live their life, you have a problem with the mindset that some people dont belong because of their colour, creed, religion, place of birth or sexual orientation, youre not someone who should be given a voice. Live and let live.

As an Asian hockey fan that was born and raised in Canada I have mixed feelings about Don Cherry. I love his personality, his patriotism, and his love for hockey. At the same time I can't help but think about his xenophobic remarks because it always reminds me that hockey isn't for everyone. I wear a poppy every year, I do the exact same things that "Canadians" are supposed to do because this is the culture I grew up in. But the sad reality is that i'll never experience the feeling of belonging to this country or to the game of hockey because there are people like Don Cherry always there to show how they're superior to me in every way. I understand he doesn't like immigration, whatever, but you have to accept the people that are already here. Disregarding people based on their ethnic background is just something I can't and will never understand. White people are also children of immigrants that came to an unknown land and made their living following the same culture they came with. With that being said, I do agree that the reason Don got fired was stupid compared to everything else he has said in the past. I still like Don Cherry and I miss Coach's Corner every Saturday. I ask people to just take 2 minutes and reflect on their views of other cultures, and ask themselves why they think the way they do.

All Don had to do was not single out immigrants for not wearing poppies. He didn’t get fired for saying “you people”, he wasn’t fired for saying support the military, he got fired for saying “all you people who come here”. If he had just said “whether you were born here or came here yesterday, wear a poppy!” he would’ve been just fine. Now, they were definitely looking for a reason to let him go, the game had passed him by and his commentary had kind of been reduced to “look at this” and “good boy from _____”. But still, all he had to do was not single out immigrants and he couldn’t do that.

"single out immigrants" The mob will find any reason to go after someone. The average idiot is so simple that hate isn't just an emotion, it's a guiding metric used by their tiny minds to make sense of the world around them. Don was guilt of being an old white guy talking about immigrants. I love how people talk about privilege and crap like that when literally every single person I've met from Don's generation suffered what we would call child abuse. No, my parents couldn't always afford a Poppy.....no my parents couldn't afford to spare a couple extra dollars to buy one. I'm not patriotic, thankful, or a good Canadian because of it? Thanks, Don Cherry. I for one don't miss him. He and people like him have caused a lot of pain, suffering and hurt for people just coming to build better lives for themselves and their kids. I fucking LOVE Canada. I love my country, I love I was born here. But sometimes all people see is my colour. Sometimes all people saw is that I didn't have a poppy. Sometimes all people heard was my parent's accent and that was enough to hate us. I hate that I'm saying this but it's awfully privileged to sit there and say I miss this guy. He and people with his mindset didn't hurt you. It's nice to not be hurt for who you are. The way you sit there and laugh at the fact that he's being racist... It's not a joke when there are people in the room not laughing.

@@jamminninja8924 I'm talking about his commentary on the sport you knob. He lost touch with how the sport was evolving and he couldn't (or didn't want to) keep up. You can't pretend that the games today are the same as games in 80s / 90s, which he would do often. Whether you want to admit it or not, he wasn't willing to adapt and he should've lost his spot years before he eventually did. And I can't wait for your dumb peanut brain to spin this politically. edit: I guess I should mention that I also had ancestors that fought for Canada and the Allies in WW2, because for some reason thats relevant.

@@jamminninja8924 Oh my look everyone, it’s another person that misquotes it to downplay it. “You people who come here… and take our bread and honey” He singled out immigrants when he didn’t have to. That’s why they fired him. If he said “every Canadian, whether you were born here or came here yesterday, should wear a poppy for those who fought and died for our freedom”. There! That’s all he had to say! But he had to single out immigrants, when I know plenty of people born in Canada that don’t wear a poppy in November

It's Don's fault Don isn't on TV. Why is it always when people say "just telling it like it is" they are talking about a racist or xenophobe? Don made a career off of it, the world changed and he didn't. Simple. Happens. HNIC intermission could be more entertaining then it is, but it has to be better than it was. Why doesn't it surprise me Johnny loves Don's racism, sexism, xenophobia, etc?

I think when he first begun doing coaches corner it was more socially acceptable to say the things outlined in the video. If you compare the more recent Coaches Corner clips before his firing you can definitely see that he mellowed out. The majority of people that say "Don tells it as it is" is referring to the things he says about hockey. He's not afraid to call out players. I agree that he said racist, sexist and xenophobic things in his career, but I disagree that he didn't change.

I feel like it is also a jump to say Johnny like racism sexism and xenophobia. You are extrapolating way too much from the fact that he like coaches corner. Heck we don’t even know why he like it. Maybe he likes how lively it is and is willing to disregard all the bad thing don says. Doesn’t mean he likes it? Just that he is willing to turn a blind eye

@@shadowbbb4010 he absolutely did not change. The reason he said less xenophobic things later in his career is because he knew he was going to be fired if he did. Just because he said it less doesn’t mean he didn’t have the same views. He did have the same views and that’s why it was a xenophobic comment that got him fired

I mean, all Don had to do was *not* whine specifically about people who come from different countries/cultures wearing or not wearing a poppy. Easy. He could have said that he felt like "EVERYONE should wear a poppy." Or he could have said nothing. But he put his foot in his mouth in the age of the internet, when if you're a public figure, everything you say goes around the world twice within minutes of you saying it. No one to blame but himself for that. Though frankly, I don't miss Don's homerism for the leafs and/or the bruins. *shrug*
