I Messed this Gundam Kit Up

What's happening HOMIES! Finished building the master grade barbatos and had an absolute blast building it... for most of the build. Unfortunately had a few mishaps happen along the way but that doesn't take away from how absolutely amazing this kit was. HIGHLY recommend giving it a go for any of you interested in a little bit more of a challenge. Hope you guys enjoy the video and I'll be back soon for another one!

Glad to see you discover on your own why most builders cut out the parts they need as they go. You can get away with pre-cutting everything on a smaller model, but once you get into MG, RG, or PG territory that becomes a lot less practical. EDIT: oof, as soon as you said you used matte topcoat I knew exactly where this was going. The topcoat-before-liner tip is for GLOSS topcoat, not matte. The gloss coat gives you a smooth surface that wipes clean easily. What you did with the markers to finish lining the kit is a pretty common alternative to liquid panel liner, and one that a lot of people prefer since there's no risk of damaging the plastic, even without a topcoat.

Good thing i use cheap 0.03 + 0.05 snowman drawing marker from the very first time i build my gunpla because i don't really like how freaking expensive the gundam/tamiya panel line pour type is. And when i was about to buy it, i stumbled upon a panel line guide video explained that the liquid used in the pour type is dangerous for the kit's plastic without top coat.

Accidents happen to all of us from time to time, especially when we're picking up new skills. When I first started, last year, I cut into a piece I didn't mean to. It didn't result in the kind of cleanup pain you had to go through, of course, but still. Frustrating. Anyway, if you decide to later, you can absolutely just topcoat over the matte with a gloss coat so you can get that panel lining. The kit is definitely not ruined. But even without panel lines, the kit looks great and your hard work shows through. Also, I notice you upped your pose game. Barbie looks ready to deliver a massive beatdown. All in all, great job!

Often times when I'm trying a new process, I try them on smaller and cheaper kits like Entry Grade or High Grade. That way I feel less bummed out when things don't their way. Mistakes are part of the learning process, I still haven't top-coated any of the a dozen or so kits I've built, since I started the hobby last year. Also there are a few different kinds of panel liners, I usually use Mr hobbies Gundam panel lining markers, there are videos comparing them to the Tamiya panel liner online, I haven't been able to see Tamiya panel lines in person yet so I don't know which one's better. I'm still fairly new to the hobby, but videos online and reviews for kits have been very helpful!

I went with the Gundam markers because my local hobby store had them for $4 each and did not have Tamia panel Lerner. I gotta say, I like the quality of your videos so far, they're clean and relaxing to watch. Just a suggestion for building, on your little container, you can still use it even for larger kits with many parts, but you should use each slot per limb, like for example, one slot would be for the head, one slot for the torso, one for the right arm, one for the left arm, so on and so forth. Hopefully this helps you with your future builds. Keep it up man.

I've had my MG Barbatos sitting in my closet waiting to be built, but I've been putting it off to work on a couple high grades until I felt ready. I think I might finally break the seal on it. I'm pretty new to the hobby as well (half a year now?), and have been using the gundam fine tip markers to panel line. It could be useful to keep a couple on hand, especially because they are plastic safe. I want to get into top/bottom coating my kits, but I live in Florida where the humidity is almost always too high to top coat :/ Keep up the great work! I look forward to seeing more of your videos!

Great video as always! Also you should get yourself a Gundam panel line marker for such situations. As for myself, when i finish building one part or two, i'd panel line, apply decals and top coat right away (especially for MG ver.Ka kits since they have tons of water slide decals). This would keep me not getting bored from just doing one task for a long time and also if i get mistakes on one part, i can learn from it and do better on the other one, preventing me from messing the whole kit. Keep it up and you'd gain lots of experiences for the future kits!

Great build man! and good on you for even talking about making a mistake. EVERYONE in this hobby messes up, but a lot of people try to act like they don't. Thankfully most mistakes are fixable and the ones that aren't can be a great start for a custom kit. It's just a lot of extra time and and patience. Whenever you get back around to Barbatos there are a lot of cool upgrade kits for it available if you want to go even further than panel lining and decals. Bandai released an expansion kit through their P-Bandai service that let's you change it's armor/weapon loadouts to the others it gets in the anime, and a few 3rd party companies have made pre-wired LED kits for it as well! For Gunpla recommendations i vote the MG Ver. Ka Wing Zero EW, for non Gundam kits i recommend Flame Toys Furai Model line, they have a lot of Transformers kits!

Gundam Marker Flow type panel liners and acrylic paint thinner with q-tips will save you a lot of heartache. Since the Gundam marker flow type panel liners are not enamel, you don’t have to worry about top coating to protect it from cracking. Clean up is pretty easy too, just make sure you shake the marker up first before you use it. Trust me on that brother.

I think you did a great job despite the missteps. You made a good video and should be proud. Personally I use plastic sandwich bags for my parts (quart bags if the parts are going to be too big) and write the runner letter/number on a little slip of paper I throw in with the parts. One bag per runner, then it doesn't matter how many runners a kit has.

Easy fix. Take it apart, throw the parts into some hobby thinner (mr color thinner for example). The hardware store thinner, while cheap is too hot and can potentially melt the plastic. Hobby thinners are perfectly safe. Leave it at least half a day and the paint can easily be wiped off. I personally dip an old toothbrush into the thinner and go over the part to allow the bristles to reach the recesses. What I do is I take the parts out of the thinner one by one, quickly scrub with the toothbrush, then put that piece into a bowl of water. This prevents left over thinner from drying and leaving any residue paint/top coat on the part while you work through the rest of the parts. What's left to do is rinse the parts thoroughly. Let them dry and do what you will with them.

Don't let yourself get too hung up on your mistakes, everyone makes them all the time with Gunpla, its a part of the process. I've been doing this hobby for years and still make lots of mistakes that can takes ages to fix ^^; For your issue like you realised, you cant really do panel liner on a matte top coat as the matte finish sucks up all the ink. I'd suggest one of two options: 1. Take off all the coloured armour pieces (use a part seperator) and soak them in a solvent to remove the top coat and leave you with bare plastic, then you can top coat with a gloss finish top coat, do your panelining and then do decals and matte top coat to finish 2. Just place a new layer of gloss top coat overtop of the matte one, will make the plastic smooth and able to be detailed again. another idea would be to use a dry panel liner (looks kinda like a graphite pencil) to do your panel lines, as this wont run, but wont look as nice as liquid. Keep up the amazing work! If I can give a kit recommendation I'd suggest the MG Gundam Dynames as your next build, super nice kit.

model building is about the journey not the destination and learning every step of the way we've all messed up kits or lost pieces all about learning from mistake. Form my own personal experience ive never had a problem using panel liner before top coat just have to make sure it doesnt puddle up and you ive it a chance for it to evaporate and not sit there and it being matt shouldn't matter for the first coat if you want to do it that way just sounds like your top coat was acrylic based and the panel liner was enamel but i could be wrong about that anyway different paints are made of different bases and they will react differently to each other
