I made winter boots out of wool scraps! Easy home shoemaking!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Finnish winters are cold and leather boots are expensive. Poorer folk had to use ingenuity to keep their feet warm and they came up with these quilted wool boots that could be made at home.

    I get so excited every time you post a video! I love learning about folk costumes and what poorer people made at home. The only other costuber I know who has content about folk costume and folk art and culture is Pretty Shepherd. Does anyone have recommendations?

    I don’t know many. Most folk costume content is usually made in languages other than English. Besides Pretty Shepherd, have you checked out @elinabrahamsson9442 She makes Swedish working women’s costumes and her videos are amazing!

    Hi! First of all, the boots are gorgeous! Second, I'm so happy I've found your channel! I'm from Hungary and on one occassion at a thrift store in Budapest, I randomly stumbled upon two vintage skirts by the Finnish brand Arola. I've been obsessed with traditional Finnish weaving ever since, can't wait to learn from your videos!:)

    Yeah, it’s a pity. However, real shoemakers take the pattern from the lasts using tape. If you can find a pair of lasts that are your size, you should be able to make the pattern from them. That also makes sure that the shoes actually fit the lasts.

    Why yes I am actually unironically wearing sandals in December still T.T These look so nice and toasty, and the embroidery is cheerful and adorable. Colours on a black ground is always such a good design. Also, I don't know if the socks (or are they tights?) you wore with them are handmade or not, but they're so pretty and go really well with them.

    What would the soles be made out of in the past? And what glues would have been used? These are very cool!

  • @withmyhandsdream

    @withmyhandsdream

    9 ай бұрын

    The soles would probably have been wool but they would have been brushed with tar to make them more durable. They would have then needed no glue. With regular shoes, the soles were sewn on.

    They feel fine but perhaps a bit loose at the heel. I think I should have made my own pattern directly from the lasts. I have also been eyeing all the different kinds of soles on Etsy. For not so snowy days a thicker sole would be more practical.

    Well, we have these big second-hand stores or warehouses called Recycling centers in Helsinki region. People donate them stuff they don’t need and they sort it out and sell it forward. I love these places as you can do real treasure hunting in them! You can find anything from cheap H&M tops to 19th century antiques. They also have big craft sections where you can find materials and tools for many different kinds of crafts. Like how many people try weaving or bobbin lace and then realise that it is not their thing?

  • @withmyhandsdream

    Yes. They aren’t as warm and it might be a good idea to use some soft and thick layers in between. You could use polyester wadding of something like that if you don’t want to use wool.
