I Made it to a Secret Country in the Amazon

Thanks to Expedia Group for sponsoring this story! Check out their One Key program: bit.ly/3qiFIrX
My last visit to Guyana (back in 2016) was not enjoyable, to say the least. I vividly remember my hotel receptionist locking the door at 7pm and saying that I couldn’t leave because it was too dangerous!
But back then, I was young and naive, so I decided to give it another chance with new perspectives. And this time around was a lot more enjoyable! Not only did I get to fully enjoy the street markets and tasty cuisine of Georgetown (the capital), but I also got to head down into the Amazon to meet an indigenous tribe and go hunting for anacondas at night!!
I hope you learned a thing or two about the only English-speaking nation in South America, and I would love to hear from you in the comments down below. Seriously - I read every single comment and your feedback is greatly appreciated so I can continue to improve the way I tell stories!

🇬🇾🔥 Loved to see this, you did Guyana justice now, Drew. I lived there (im Dutch) for 8 months this year for an internship. Similarily to you, i was warned about the roughness and dangers there. Thinking I'd have a bad time, it turned out to be some of the best months ever. What a beautiful country, especially the Rupununi. Never had any problems while living there. The Guyanese are some of the most hospitable people I've met, and they really enjoy partying and the outdoors. Having said that, I've also heard of plenty bad things happening in Georgetown, like robberies and assaults. One still has to be careful, use common sense, like evwrywhwre. As you've seen, the beauty of Guyana is in the interior. I've had the privilege to visit several parts of the country during my time - but tourism remains unaccessible for most of the country due to extremely high prices (because of the oil boom)

Your section on the Rupununi really captured the vibe, love it. Although... nobody go to Guyana please, I want it to remain a hidden gem!

I lived in Guyana in the late 80's and made several shorter trips there. I found it to be a simple, vibrant life with happy people, despite the almost daily blackouts. I'm sorry you had such a bad experience there in 2016 and that you gave yourself another chance to experience it. For more Jewish population, try going next door to Suriname, which has a long Jewish history and a community that is still there. FYI, when I tell people I used to live in Guyana, they say "Ghana?" Then I have to explain that it is in South America. More people were familiar with the older term "British Guiana."

As usual... U did a great job, Drew! Nice personal docu U shot🙏🏼 It's so important not to jugde basicly everything in life on a first impression. So good and heartwarming from U to go back to the countries U had a bad rep with. Especially for the genuine beautiful people living there. I'm from the Netherlands, and cosidder myself in the catagory C people for Guyana. But I'm biased because I've been to Surinam before (former Dutch colony), and as U know it's a neighbour country. But U did you're vlog so well, I see myself definitly go to Guyana one holiday. Bless the beautiful, warm people over there👊🏼❤

Drew just a small correction , the northern border of Guyana is not the Caribbean Sea , it is the Atlantic Ocean . Guyana is not in the Caribbean , it’s on the continent of South America ( the coast of ). Guyana is considered a part of the West Indies/Caribbean because of its colonial past and connection with Great Britain , also the cultural similarities of the islands.
