The first thing I ever made on my own was a bathing suit. It was the hardest thing to make, and stretched like crazy when it got wet. I think I lined it. The tension of the thread didn't work and the seams snapped. What a mess! Wrong project for a beginner, I'd say!

If anyone wants to recreate the denim jacket I highly suggest seam ripping the bottom part (the band?) and sewing it onto the top, it's really easy and it'll make it look a lot more professional! Denim is annoying to work with and you might have to adjust the band (just cut it in the back/ middle) but it'll be worth it ! (make sure to use the right needle tho ! otherwise the denim will break it)

@@LillyPadArt I am not professional, but still have some experience. Check if your sewing machine has a stitch that looks like a mix of straight and zigzag. That can be first step. Check your manual, there can be a LOT of good information in there... I have a Brother sewing machine and for that I have a special foot that actually can cut the edge of the fabric like a serger does. I got the official Brother foot, but I know Amazon has plenty of no-name feet, so it doesn't have to be expensive. I later bought a serger, and it is better than the sewing machine with the special foot, but in a pinch the foot is fine.

I've been sewing for about 15 years now and make most of my own clothes, it's always great to see someone get started! I hope you don't mind some unsollicited advice that can really elevate some future projects: When sewing things like t-shirts or the halter top in this video, try looking into finishing the neckline and armholes with bands made from self fabric instead of bias tape. They have the same amount of stretch and because you use negative ease (make them slightly shorter than the circumference) it helps with any gaping. The next time you do any visible stitching on a denim project, try stitching from the right side! You can get a thicker thread called topstitching thread that will look like that typical thick jeans stitching, but those often don't play nice with home sewing machines. I thread my machine with two bobbins of the same colour on top (just pull them through as if it's one thread) which gives the same look. If you want to make a stripy garment look a lot fancier, try matching the stripes along the seamlines. This is a telltale sign of higher quality clothes because it means they cut the pattern in the way that's the most aesthetically pleasing, not the most economical way. Pattern matching is also super satisfying. The neck on that shirt is called a polo neck and while they are tricky and require some accurate sewing, you should be able to find a tutorial on it. For a cleaner finish on the swimsuit: sew the straps first and sandwich them between the cup pieces before sewing those together, that way the ends are tucked into the cups. Sew the bottom strap as if it's a piece of bias tape, sandwiching the cups in between. No raw edges! If you want the bottoms to be a bit more secure, try finishing them with swimsuit elastic (regular elastic erodes quickly when exposed to salt or chlorine). You zigzag it to the wrong side, stretching it ever so slightly to create some tension, then flip it over and zigzag again. Forgive me for my novel, and I'm looking forward to seeing your sewing evolve!

What the other commenters said is true - it's practically slave labour which means very low pay. Yet still, the markup on clothes is INSANE. They'll usually be at least 2 times the production prize, oftentimes a lot more than that. So while the workers get underpaid, the customers overpay.

To make the Jean jacket even better you could have taken the bottom of it and used it as the hem on the chopped one. It would have given it a more finished look

I love watching these videos of you making clothing . I am a larger lady so making my own clothes is a bit harder but still do able. I have many patterns (paper) but have taken paper clothes to make myself clothes and don't usually like the results. Practice makes perfect!

Just a suggestion from a fashion designer: when tracing your garments trace out a different piece for your front and your back. The back needs a longer ride and sometimes a wider back to accomodate a bottom. It’ll help the top of the waist sit straight all around. Also with leggings flares and shorts you can add a rectangle waistband to the top to finish it really nicely. Or add in an elastic to help hold them up. Love watching you on your sewing journey

Het Mia! Love love love! The items came out so good! They fit all very well! Just a tip for improving on the pattern with th bikershorts: you need to account for the back. Now the back is curving down slightly as does the front, because the bum takes some of the back length, hence why it is curving down in the middle back seam. With copying the fabric you shape the back identical to the front, but the front doesnt have that curve from the bum. What you do is: instead of cutting the waist straight across, you want to end a little higher than where you started cutting in the front seam. So from the sides, you cut in a slight curve upwards. This way, the back goes straight across your waist. This will improve fit and look even more profesh!

You did so well sewing all those things you weren't familiar with. I want to challenge you on something because you almost did it by accident so I bet you could do it on purpose. Next time you're using striped fabric, take the time when you're cutting and match up the stripes so each piece will flow seamlessly into the next. Look at those striped pants from the side and you'll see you almost did it and how much cooler it would be if you had. You are really improving every video and I'm very proud of the way you're saving money and learning new skills. Great video as usual!

I think it's so cool that your giving away a sewing machine!! I hope someone really deserving receives it!! Sewing is truly an awesome hobby!! I'm currently sewing while I watch this. You can always just make your own bias tape. I do it all the time. For the jean jacket, I would have cut off the original hem and sewed it back on and skipped hemming all together.

I was SO hoping you would sew the bottom strip of the denim jacket to the edge where you cut it off. For anyone looking to make one, it would probably be a super easy transition and give a professional look! Either way Mia killed every look as usual!!!!🔥🔥

since you have a serger, when you're sewing your stretchy fabric together (like the long seam on your candy cane pants) just use the serger from the get go. the stitch is meant to work with stretch fabrics AND in encases the seam so no rolling :)

Mia you've come so far in such a short time on your sewing. I've barely tried to make anything in the 5 years or more that i've had my machine so I still feel like just above beginner level at best. Tend to make more craft items in case I can't do the clothing. I have only made a tshirt so far. I was thrilled when you started to sew and feel so encouraged to get more into clothing. I have collected so many patterns to try the whole time I've been hesitating. No joke I have over 300 and only done the 1 clothing and 2 bears as gifts! Anyway good luck to those entering the competition. I'm in the UK but I'm set anyway but it's nice to think you might be getting others into this hobby :)

I love this series Mia! Quick tip: look up tutorials on pants that show how to accommodate the bootie. I have had to so that so my butt crack doesn't show in the pants I make. You could also add a waistband to add one coverage and a finishing touch.
