I made a Christmas 🎅 song with AI 🤖

Challenged by a friend last week on why I’d never done a Christmas song, I protested it wasn't really me, and besides I didn’t think I had it in me to write suitably Christmassy lyrics. "No problem”, he said, "we’ll get ChatGPT to do it for you!", upon which he instructed the AI to generate Christmas lyrics in the style of Steven Wilson. Which it proceeded to do so. By the yard, in fact, I was shocked at how instantaneous and easy it was to guide it ("don’t actually mention Christmas" we said to it, "make it feel more lonely”…etc)
I’m still not entirely sure what I think about AI, the knee-jerk reaction is to consider it a threat to a musician like me, but it’s clearly not going away, so this is my experiment to try embracing it and using it as a tool in the creative process. And of course also to have some fun doing something I would never normally have thought about doing, the archetypal seasonal song. December Skies is the result, swiftly recorded last weekend and written in collaboration with an Artificial Intelligence version of myself. I wonder what people will make of it. I wonder what I make of it.
In keeping with the artificial intelligence theme, the visualiser for December Skies has also been generated using a purpose built AI system created by Miles Skarin. The video is based on imagery drawn from some of my previous videos then placed into 2D and 3D backdrops.

The music draws out the "you" that the AI created lyrics for. The instrument choices also really lift the theme. The words clearly fit your lyrical vocabulary. The music sits back nicely and isn't overpowered like many other Xmas songs are, and that was an inspirational decision, but it doesn't sacrifice the seasonal motifs we associate with Xmas music. The build is gentle and leaves a nostalgic feeling like many of the Tin Pan era songs were written to do. It's not overly exuberant but has that realistic-optimistic sense to it, "yes the world can be shit but as least we have each other," kind of thing.

Really liked it. The melody, mood, and style were great, which is what really matters for a song like this. The lyrics worked fine, did fit in with your style, but also a bit lacking (hollow?), but are much less important than the overall feel of the song, which was great.

All seemed very authentic Steven Wilson. However, the absence of any reference to cigarettes was a dead giveway that the lyrics were AI generated. All in jest, all in jest. A very neat treat and cool experiment. Many thanks for sharing!

The lyrics are simple and catchy. I could tell it was missing that "something" then I read the beginning and it dawned on me. While it works, it's missing feeling. There is the human experience/ relatability that you give in YOUR lyrics. "December Skies" is good but not great. I've been a fan for decades and it's an interesting experiment. It sounds a little bit like Coldplay decided to make a Christmas song. I don't like it, but I am sure millions of people love it, if they ever hear it. After almost 30 years of awareness in life, I pay attention to any song that catches me. From any Genre. I find a song I enjoy about every 3 months. The two latest that I discovered are Celldweller - New Elysium and an oldy, Abba - Gimme, Gimme, Gimme I once heard a Christmas song on the radio at 2 am from the 1920's and I have been looking for it ever since.
