I'm Throwing Away Years of Training!

We are still in Bali! My freediving training has been going really well although I am going back to basics. My technique needs some fine tuning. It needs quite a bit of fine tuning! I have always been able to continue freediving deeper but in order to progress COMFORTABLY I need to establish some new and more conducive habits. Its always hard to take a step back but sometimes that enables you to run forwards!
We also take our Sony A7S MarkII and Paralenz for a dive to do a camera comparison... check out the results! Also, for those of you who don't know how to make a neck weight it is super easy and I'll show you how.
Thank you so much to Apnea Bali for all your help with my training and also to Eli at Apnea Bali for your help with filming most of the dive footage of me you see here, you have been a lifesaver!

Hey Adam! In my experience with shooting on mirrorless cameras underwater the final image result is determined way before you get into premiere pro. Biggest tip is to set a custom white balance at depth. In the A7S ii you may have to do this in photo mode first which is a bit of a ball ache but possibly something you can set to a custom button. Say at 10m depth point the camera at the reef or sand and use that to capture a custom white balance. This will drop the blues and crank the reds and things will look more normal. I wouldn't shoot in sLog 2 because it's only 8 bit colour space and you will get heavy banding issues on blues if you grade it too hard. Slog also doesn't perform well in low light.

Ah bro thanks so much! I'll have a look at my camera now and see if I can program a 10m white balance into one one the buttons. By the way yours are the only spearing vids that I watch and the only decent ones out there in my opinion. No one else seems to understands how to create a narrative.

Thanks Adam, too kind! I’ve sent you a DM on ‘gram with some snaps I’ve taken with a custom white balance and a GH5, should be able to get similar results with your camera with a bit of fiddling.

Kudos to you Adam for taking the nxt step with your training! There comes a time in every professional athletes career when they have to take a good hard look at their technique to see if there are areas of improvement. To realize that some of your techniques need to be changed so that you can advance your performance, are some of the hardest changes to make, as the old techniques are so automated and have become so 'comfortable' and 'reliable'...we just know they work for what you need them to do (which must be an incredibly reassuring feeling when participating in your field of sport). But, to advance you must change & adapt your technique, which means leaving your comfort zone...becoming anxious, & unsure (which isn't at all how you want to feel for freediving, because it interferes with your relaxation)...and sometimes what proves to be the best technique, at first, seems quite foreign, strange and maybe even a bit uncomfortable. Good on ya' though...can't wait for your nxt instalment, and keep up the fantastic work!! :)

Thanks so much Rory! You see the situation perfectly :) I know I often make light of things in my videos but it actually has been quite a tough process. In many ways I'm feeling like a beginner again, i'm having issues performing basic skills because they're foreign to me and it's emotional at times but I'm coming out strong now! I just did a 92m dive that was the best and easiest dive i've ever done to that depth so ideally I'll be back over 100 in a few days and just loving it!

That’s pretty amazing for you to be able to implement such a high level of self reflection to improve and be able to pass barriers you are experiencing. In my experience- it’s easy to say this, but very hard to actually do especially when you’re a high level athlete. I know this video is quite old, but the level of reflection is hugely impressive.

About camera's in good light conditions they are not too far apart, but when the light goes down the A7II should show a clear difference (colours, detail, noise), especially in the shadow areas. To see the benefit of the bigger lens en sensor use a fast aperture (F4 and lower), and use Slog2. Slog3 will give a bit better dynamic range over Slog2 but it falls apart quicker because the 8 bit compression. Do some on land side by side test with a consistent static scene where you control the light and have detail in the highlights and shadows.Aside from selecting the F-stop also choose the shutter speed to 1/60 when you're filming 30fps, let the camera choose the ISO automatically.I think Daan Verhoeven can give you more detailed advice. On your diving and quest for more speed, have you tried going down arms over head? I think that is the way of the future, if you can retain enough relaxation that is. Work on those shoulders!btw on that last dive the current looks massive!

Thanks Kars! I have some experimenting to do to seems! :) I've been playing with my camera settings all day :) about the freefalling, I now have a 1mps descent time but I was actually just thinking about freefalling with the arms above my head the other day! haha I think i'll try it out. I can't imagine it being too challenging to maintain relaxation during freefall. The biggest issue I can see would be to not allow the slight engagement/tension in the shoulders reach the neck area

Was just looking at your neck weight wondering if you made it or bought it. Then you showed us how! I’m sure you know this, but the nice thing about the Sony is it’s not over exposed, basically you can always make an image brighter without losing quality, if you recorded it too bright you cannot keep the quality. There is a simple way of colorgrading making one layer on top of footage so through the whole video it’s that grade. It works but not ideal
