I'm Terrified of the Ocean...I Played Subnautica

Ойындар

I am playing all the video games I was never able to growing up. I'm not what you might call a "gamer" but now that I have my own money I figured I'd start playing the games I never could. Today I am trying the very popular ocean survival game, Subnautica. A game with terrifying fish that I hope I will never see.

    Got the two terms flipped, Terror is actively in your face like fnaf and other bullshit like that with cheap jumpscares and stuff, Subnautica on the other hand messes with your mind: Jellyshroom caves, "ooh cool mushroom", Crab Snake time!, you avoid every mushroom after that thinking there's a snake in there ready to snatch you up despite there only being a couple snakes. Or jumping into the water from the floating island and looking down into the darkness, i've played like 10 full playthroughs and countless unfinished ones and my mind still goes "no no no no FUCK that, i'm not going down there" despite knowing full well what's down there. THAT's *real* Horror.

    I figured it out on my playthrough but it's not worth doing. The best way to deal with crashfish is to swim at them. They are fast in a line but they can't turn well so when they pop out and come at you, you just go strait at them. You pass each other and you just keep going strait. The crashfish will not be able to turn around and catch you before it explodes.

    As a veteran of the game I have some tips to help you out. One, the scanner is how you progress the story, by scanning wreckage to get blueprints to build better gear, to ultimately go deeper. The game does have an ending, it’s not open ended like Minecraft. To get off the planet, you need to go down first. When you die, you lose any items you picked up since you last left your base. Any items you brought with you from your base do not get dropped. You met the Reaper in the first episode! They’re scary but you can manage them, they’re really bad at sharp turns! Also listen to the PDA’s of the other survivors! They shed light as to their fate and really add to the story! Hope you stick with it! It’s my favorite game now, and helped me conquer my fear of the ocean!

  • @ClusterDSA

    The scanner is your best, most important tool. SCAN EVERYTHING. And read the information. To make this easier, there is an option in the menus that makes it so the game is paused when you have the PDA up. So you don't have to worry about suffocating or getting hungry or thirsty while you read and figure things out, or change the tools on your hotbar. The game doesn't give you on screen direction for a lot of stuff, that information is instead in the scan data. Scan data tells you what things can be used for, i.e. what it's for in crafting. It tells you how predators behave and therefore how to avoid them. Good luck with one of the best games ever made!

    2 tips for when you go back to play more Subnautica (spoiler-free): 1) when placing habitat parts, if there's something near the wall you are going to expand, game won't allow you to place more corridors. Either plan a bit ahead or remove containers and stuff from walls (you get 100% refunded so at worst it's just a bit tedious, though it does use extra battery power which might be an issue at the earliest stages of the game). 2) PDA is really well done in this game - try to scan everything (at least ore crops, minerals, flora) and it will basically tell you where to find every ingredient. Unfortunately the game really does lack good (or any) tutorials which your video helped me realize (I have ~200hrs in Subnautica and 1 full playthrough of Below Zero so many nuances are quite obvious to me by now). Nice job slashing that exploding fish pre-explosion! Somehow, despite finishing game few times and doing plenty of crazy things I never managed to do that...

  • @lorettabes4553
    @lorettabes45532 ай бұрын

    I remember when this game was in early access for *years.* I think the lack of proper tutorial is because of that, everyone playing at the time already knew the basics and wanted to get to new stuff, which is not great for entry-level people who don't know anything like how important the scanner is.

    Here’s some advice you’ve almost definitely already gotten: 1. Scan everything you possibly can. This game is like Minecraft from the fact that it doesn’t directly teach you things but scanning can give you a lot of useful, but sometimes useless information. Sometimes it’s better to take a second to read stuff than to end up looking for something in the wrong place for hours. (I’d recommend scanning the different ore types) 2. Don’t be immediately afraid by everything. I know this one can be hard, and it’s completely fine to be careful, but it’s better to just come prepared with multiple life packs instead of just taking one or two and fleeing the moment you see something moving towards you. This game usually makes it clear what organisms are looking to harm you. (Once you see them of course) All being scared does is make you act irrationally and less focused.

    I cannot express the amount of screaming "NO DON'T DO THAT" was involved in going to the ship (I also hadn't known you had gotten the radiation suit.) The first time I met the reaper was right there. I immediately named him Gary. I was on creative, though, so it didn't hurt me.

    The big crashed ship, the Aurora was initially intended as a backdrop, but every player wanted to go explore it, so it eventually got added as an explorable place and even made part of the story. So, in a way, you and all the other players made the devs want to go there!

    The bit about a knife being a single-purpose tool is hilarious to me. Even not having played survival games, but just having seen shows like Man Vs. Wild, I know that a good knife is used for just about anything. Granted, Subnautica isn't the most simulation-style game, but it's still worth trying your tools on anything and everything. I definitely wouldn't recommend this to anyone who isn't a hardcore survival game fan, but for a content creator looking for a good source to mine, Green Hell is another one to look into. Great for the kind of content creator that doesn't mind using their struggle as a source of comedy.

    Oh... That was so similar to my introduction to the big fishy near the shipwreck. I more or less did the exact same thing. Swim over there - suddenly a BIG RED SCARY DUDE, and I swam for my life Let me tell you this - take a breather, take a break, and find your own way through it. There are many tools you can work with. It doesn't really get much less scary, but in hindsight it's an experience that I look back on fondly, with many fascinating experiences I hope you enjoy it in the end - but if you truly do not, please do what you feel is right instead of giving in to peer pressure Thank you for sharing your experience :)

    PSA swimming parallel to the Aurora so you avoid the reapers will eventually lead to something of an underwater cliff. swim past and down it and you find super good ore deposits. plus it is what the PDA describes as an ecological dead zone so there is nothing to worry about :D

    Frankly, you did great overcoming your fear of the ocean. I've watched a KZreadr (Aliciaxlife) freak out just standing on the top of the escape pod and barely even try to dive into the water in broad daylight before giving up on the game.

  • @tropmop7813
    @tropmop78132 ай бұрын

    Btw the reason the ship exploding seemed anticlimactic is because the pod is normally supposed to spawn to the side of the ship but yours spawned behind it for some reason, it looks way better if you see it from the side

    Subnautica was my first survival game, but I found it pretty easy to figure out. You pretty much just explore, build stuff and don't forget to eat and eventually you get through it. The only advice I would give to someone that they might not think to do on their own is to use a lot of beacons so that you know where to find all the resources you need for this or that thing. Especially if you want to build a big base you need to know where all that stuff is.

    The level of anxiety I felt as you started swimming toward the stern of the ship when this whole video was nearly identical to my first playthrough of the game and that was my exact first experience with a reaper leviathan and the exact same thoughts I had afterwards, slamming my laptop shut and vowing to never play it again, only to get sucked back in the next day. Only difference in our playthroughs was I had built the seamoth, the reaper leviathan absolutely destroyed it, I ended up swimming away as fast as I could, getting chased by the thing and ended up getting swarmed by two more and killed. Kinda glad I rage quit without saving and didn’t have to rebuild the seamoth all over again. I feel your pain, bro 😂 awesome video! Subbed

    This video popped up randomly and I LOVED it. Not everyday do you see someone hop into subnautica with 0 knowledge due to how much early access was given and the popularity. I was hoping youd see more of the “story” the game gives (yes theres story and an ending too that is all amazing) but i understand not wanting to continue. Especially with that reaper. There are quite a few scary areas including lots of open ocean natural scariness, but if you do keep playing then I am so excited to see you play!

    TIPS AND INFO: 1. The Stalkers (shark- like predator fish that followed you to your pod) are not meant to neither swim like that nor be as aggressive as they were, while dangerous, they should lose interest at a certain distance, usually. I think yours were bugged. 2. You need to pick up the PDAs at the other pods you find, this will reveal more information about the story (look at the top in your TAB menu to find data logs) 3. You should look for seaglide fragments, its the first "vehicle" in the game and it will make it much easier for you to get around. You need to find them and scan them until you have enough (i think for seaglide you need to scan only 2 fragments) 4. Bases should be built in the ocean, I usually build between the red grass zone and the starter reef zone because there are a lot of useful materials there. Solar panels work underwater too. If you look through your builder tool menu you will see something called "reinfocement", if you add that to the walls of your base it will increase the integrity to prevent it from flooding. 5. Scan EVERYTHING you can, you might find use for the data logs it give you later :D and dont miss scannable fragments in the wreckages around! 6. This game is amazing, its one of those games you wish you could play for the first time again, so I envy you. If you finish the game, and listen to the story, it's one of the greatest games made imo and I dont think you'll be disappointed.

    I hope you do decide to continue playing Subnautica. One tip for locating ores in rock is scan the rocks before breaking them (just once per rock type) and there will be a PDA entry telling you what kind of resources you can get from that rock type. In fact, quite often, if you're stuck, reading PDA entries will give you hints. Some of it is just pure lore and occasional red herrings, but almost all of it is worth reading through.

At least it's not as bad as the time I thought it'd be a good idea to fight the leviathans because someone said you could kill them. I could not, I just made it so angry it spawned a second leviathan and they camped my base.
