Dear Cherno, although there are more than 15 years of age between us I completly understand your situation. As a father of 3 kids and as the head of development in the machine tool sector I also stand at the point: Where shall I go to job wise. What keeps me going and motivates me. Sometimes I little cut helps to gain more. Just stay healthy for your family 😊

My take is this: make a slight shift over time to see what hits the sweet spot. as a start, focus way more on the Hazel engine. since this is the main job. make more content about hazel, and make it less edited. just film yourself. make less content that doesn't revolve around hazel. over time, change the amount of youtube to non-youtube work you do, but also try to change the amount of youtube-hazel to youtube-other-content work you do. I believe you'd find the perfect sweet spot at some point, and youll get more freedom. also, make more time to spend with family and friends. no questions. otherwise you'd just reach burnout. we don't want that.

Dear Cherno, your problem may be how to achieve self-realization. It seems that you have some things that you have to do in the process of self-realization. Then I think, follow your own ideas, you know that sometimes some things cannot have both sides. .Or let them all go to hell when faced with a dilemma. Hahaha

Statistically there's a lot of KZreadrs that make frequent devlogs, but almost all of them rarely make progress on their projects that isn't superficial. Honestly I think you'd need someone else to make devlogs while you actually focus on developing (ex. Blender & Unreal do this). It's too easy to get distracted with trying to make good content vs actually making progress.

This. Either someone rolling B-roll footage or just hiring a part time video editor. Most devs through history aren’t doubling and tripling their work load as a filmmaker, someone else is doing all that work while you make the magic happen

I think not spending 100% of time on a single problem area is actually beneficial. I found that the biggest productivity killer for me was focusing exclusively on a single job. I would never take multiple responsibilities, because I thought: "well, if I cannot do this one thing, how can I manage multiple?". But it turns out that having multiple things to do actually lets me get a clean look at the problem, and that solves 99% of the problems I'm stuck on, because it's always me forgetting to account for something, or getting overly fixated on some tiny aspect. I don't know how applicable this advice is, but I think it's at least worth considering.

Speaking from personal experience here. This is easier said than done. Lately I've had someone else edit my devlogs, but we're starting to realize now that there are serious limits to this. You almost need an editor that is also a gamedev themselves and intimately familiar with the subjects, otherwise the only thing they can add is memes and some generic footage. When I talk about a subject, they often don't have any idea what I'm talking about, so I end up having to 'pre-edit' some explainer stuff in anyway, to the point where I could just as well start editing it myself. It still helps a little bit ofc, but I feel like devlogs are probably the hardest videos to outsource editing for, as you need a LOT of domain-specific knowledge to edit them well. If I just give you a bunch of footage, then somewhere in the script I mention "oh I also added the ability to generate signed distance fields from meshes so I can blend them into my voxel terrain", the editor is not going to have the slightest clue what I'm talking about. So you end up having to babysit them most of the way through. In the end they save you a *little* bit of time, and cost you a whole lot of money.

You are one of the most talented people I am aware of, certainly the most talented programmer I am aware of. I hope you don't quite here, we'd miss you for sure. Burnout seems to be happenning to a lot of KZreadrs right now, lots are giving up. I hope you can find a balance, one where you enjoy what you are doing and have time for your family and for yourself. It's not easy, that goes for any profession. I know you enjoy your profession, you love coding, you love helping others code, you just need to find that elusive balance. Taking care of your needs is so important, you and your family. Wishing you well, my friend. And I think I can speak for most if not all here when I say we love your content, whatever that content is even if it's just chilling or blowing off some steam. If you feel like you're overwhelmed and piled up with so many things to do, then you can wind it down a bit. I've always wondered how you work on the engine and put up actually highly edited videos. You can get an editor, or just make some low effort videos that don't take time, or, again, just take a break to clear your head. I've always liked your content a lot. It's both something I want to watch/listen to. Feels to me like you're talking what's on your mind and not planning to "catch the audience with it" which is rare and valuable imho. On the other hand there's videos where one can see more effort been put into editing and general composition of the finished video - they turn out great! It's probably when you put more time into videos than development I think... I believe core of your audience will stay there for the content which they love. KZread being a video platform though I think you might want to try and get some help editing, not to change the style but rather lift some weight of your shoulders and to let you focus on the dev side more.

I’m pretty sure I speak for everyone else that the rest of us will be here. Also the devlog was a bit imbalanced but in a good way! Pretty interesting seeing live stuff

You make fantastic videos. I know it's hard work. I started a channel in November '23 and it's a passion project and fun, but its also 3 hours of work per day just to produce the videos. Mad respect for all the content that you have made and the success you have had on your channel.

Hello Cherno, love your videos, and they help me a lot with my profession. Though I am a web developer, I love games and computer science in general, and recently I started diving deeper into math. Your videos are an inspiration, and I can see the love you give into each one of them. You probably considered most possibilities on how to deal with this situation, specially since you are already leading a team to leverage the quality of Hazel, and one of the things you probably are already doing is delegating work. This is the key for when there is a major goal. Consider training someone not only to improve on achieving the project's major goals, but to take the same responsabilities and visions as you do. Teach them the love and the vision you have. This could also be applied to your channel. Hire an editor to help you out with youtube. I hope this stage of your life continues to bring more friends and family together, and that you get to enjoy the results of everyone's hardwork, specially yours.

Your dedication to the craft is not unnoticed and the community thanks you for all your hard work and years of teaching us. I hope you find some peace and rest within this hectic schedule of yours. Also, let us know if you have any internships/volunteering that can be given out to the community. I'm sure it would be projects that can be decentralized.

I have noticed a pattern, burning yourself out never leads to anything good. Once you are burned out, one thinks, if I can just get through this burn-out I will work less. That never happens. Find a way to work smarter, less and surround yourself with your loved ones. Best joy comes from the joy and laughter of your children. Good luck.

can't see my Cherno in pain 😢. Not for one more moment. You don't deserve it Cherno. Even tho I am just 15, I will think of everything that my tiny little brain possibly can and try to do as much help to you as I can. The amount of knowledge that you have provided us with is unquantifiable.

My favorites are your tutorials (C++ especially, probably have seen them all by now) and your code reviews. I don't watch the dev logs really, but occasionally something bright and shiny catches my eye that I'll watch. As for the balance between vids and programming for you personally, that's a tough one. Making vids eats up enormous time, I can't imagine doing tutorials on the engine I'm writing right now at all, so I'd be inclined to push you in the programming direction, doing less videos. Trouble is you love making vids, sounds like it's what drove you to do this in the first place. It's fuel to you. I don't know. Maybe just try doing what you feel like doing from one day to the next without planning things out too much? Tomorrow if you feel like making videos, do that. If you feel like working on Hazel, do that instead. Some months you'll make one video or maybe none, and others you'll make a bunch. Go with the flow? Either way, I'd encourage you to slow down though and maybe take a long vacation if you can afford to. Working two full time gigs like this isn't sustainable for any human. Burning out and landing in a place where you're not having fun with any of it anymore might kill all motivation to do any of it. Take a break! You don't owe us anything, quite the opposite. We'll be here when you get back. 🙂

Hello Cherno! I've been following you for a while. I can say that you are one of the most talented people I have ever seen in my life. You and your videos inspire me to be a better programmer. It's really hard to find good videos to learn about game engines, C++, and graphics programming at your level of quality. I learned more from your series on C++ and OpenGL than I did in my undergrad. I just want to thank you for your time, I really appreciate it. If you need to take a break, leave the internet, or reduce the amount of videos during the time, I will continue to support you once you return. Greetings from Spain.

In 2021, I was just graduated from the university, working as a junior software engineer for a company which I hate. I was planning to search for a better job.Just a knowledge to C++ grammar and a few working experience was not enough at all to pass the interviews. Then I found you and your videos about c++ and game engine. From those videos I learnt how to build a project from zero, rather than just writing toy programs like a student. With your videos as reference I learnt more about graphic programming stuff and finally got a better job. I saw this video just now and found that you have done so much for your game engine, which is unbelivable and, inspiring because you have insisted on one thing for so long. You have had your tiny team aggregrated by guys with the same interest, and also have had a family, which is so great. Keep on sharing programming things, we love it.

Hey man. I haven’t watched in a while but checked in and saw this. Your c++ and OpenGL tutorials inspired me to pursue programming professionally back in 2018. Now I’m graduating in 4 months with a CS degree :) You are brilliant and have been a huge positive influence on my life. I hope everything feels more manageable soon, whether that’s on youtube or focusing on Hazel full-time. Do what’s best for you, and stay safe ❤

I think you're honestly doing a good job juggling those 3 jobs you have. Family is the most important one ;) With regards to ideas; I feel like there is a lot of different things going on at the moment. Dev logs, game engine series, code reviews, raytracing and other educational videos. To be honest, I like them all, but it would be very understandable if you would cut back on some to focus on others. You can also always come back later to those you cut back on, content for years! I don't know the plans, but maybe something like the raytracing series also has a certain endpoint, where you can wrap it up to have more time for other projects. Whatever the choice may be. The most important thing is that you should enjoy it and if that's the case, I don't think any choice can be the wrong one.

I sympathize, I really do. I started my channel with hopes of one day going full-indie and that's not happened. I've been at it almost 10 years now and have managed to scrape up about 2k subscribers; most of them are my students. I teach game design as a day job and have molded my channel around making educational videos, tutorials, and what not. Ever now and again I'll post a devlog of my own stuff and they don't do well. I get 5 or 6 views, while other channels that make only devlogs seem to continuously gain followers and are able to take off. It's depressing and I'm a little jealous to be honest because this is a lot of work and it really makes me feel like it's underappreciated and why am I even doing it? That said, I really enjoy your content. I like that it's eclectic. I like that there are tutorials and personal things on here. Devlogs inspire and motivate me to keep going, and I hope that mine will do the same for the few who watch them. Would I like it if your whole channel was devlogs? No. Like you said, they are a little boring. DevDuck -- another KZreadr -- I think has it down. He makes nothing but devlogs, and they're amazing. They're easy to listen to. If I were to make them full-time, I'd take inspiration from him. But the other thing about devlogs is they're a bit selfish. They offer the audience very little in my opinion outside of what I've said I like about them. At the end of the day, you have to do what's best for you. I think Hazel is pretty incredible. I'd love to work on it. If that is where your heart is and you have the resources and are able to go full-time, I would say go for it. Because if I could go full-time on anyone of my projects, I would. And then, once that's done, I'd make a devlog about it. So go for it.

Maybe go with the flow, do some dev logs (I don't know what dev logs are... yet), and come back to tutorials and other videos when you have time/inspiration. Please don't quit! You're such a gifted teacher!
