Perfect timing! My husband just got his first 3D printer and he's been asking me for things he can make for me. He's working his way up to more complex makes, so I included a charkha in the list I gave him from Thingiverse. I think he's going to try an Electric Eel Nano bobbin next. Josefin Waltin had a review of a 3D-printed charkha, and she mentioned the drive band slipping issue. Your rubber band idea is genius! I'm definitely going to try that.

Puni!!!! So, I live along a route that the trucks take cotton from the fields to the gin and clumps fall off onto the side of the road, so cotton is my easiest fiber to get ahold of and spin (man did the first forrays into wool freak me out because of how much longer the fibers are!) and so I looked up things and I found the word, I can't remember which youtuber, but then I kept watching videos and no one else was calling it a Puni, they kept saying Rolag and I was getting confused, so the fact that Puni is in your video with the definition and the fact that it is mainly a cotton thing makes me so excited!! I love the word XD

For cheap wool carders I find that brushes made specifically for dogs or cats with long, wiry hair make great DIY carders on the cheap, some of which have a little button you can push that pushes the fiber/hair off of the wire! Ross sells them for like five dollars each!

I’m so happy I came across this video! I’m so fascinated by the history of spinning. It’s a craft that spans the entire world with such beautiful differences. I was just looking for some historical information on spinning in east Asia, Korea specifically, and didn’t have a lot of luck. But it’s nice to see this.

Thank you for providing me company and mental stimulation. I'm struggling through clearing out my apartment that hasn't properly been cleaned out since COVID started. Every time I try to really buckle down and get some work done my allegies go insane and I've had to work at a pace I can't handle. I need 2 benedryl to sleep at night plus my normal allergy and asthma meds. And this is after my downstairs neighbors set their apartment on fire a little over a week ago. Neither I nor my pets (cat, Bandit and angora bunny, Rukia) were injured, nor were my personal belongings destroyed. But the landlady's contractors have to get into the apartment to check it for smoke damage and clean it out (hopefully a new coat of paint will be a thing that comes with it, maybe even some linoleum tile) and being on the autism spectrum (high functioning) I tend to go at a slower pace. I am binging your content because its too early for loud rowdy rock and roll or nerdcore rap. To add to the stress my mom has to rabbit sit my bunny because her room was where the worst of the smoke was. I don't have the relaxation of plucking my living cloud and spinning it. I've even had nightmares where my bunny got killed because I wasn't there. Even though I trust my mom implicitly and she's just up the street I can visit whenever I want. But it shows just how traumatic the experience was even though nothing was physically damaged and nobody was killed. I love the briefcase charka. I want something like that. I'm glad you got the professor in to talk about Ghandi's history with the charka spinning wheel. Part of its charm for me is the connection to Ghandi. But I also want one because its portable. I'm an apartment dweller and I live on the third floor. I don't have the space or the muscle for a giant spinning wheel like the one in your livingroom. One challenge I'd like to issue, can you make a spinning wheel from an old bicycle wheel? There's a lot of pedal powered blueprints out there. But I'm talking about just taking the bike apart and using it to make a spinning wheel, not simply powering a spinning wheel by peddling on the bike.

i finally made a little flyer bobbin assembly from my junk bike charkha, but i think i like spinning charkha cotton more than anything. that's all i want to spin, now. my bambo and silk are sitting in front of me with sad eyes. What a great color for that board!!! BTW, my ancestors, it has been said, used barrel cactus to card their fiber (not cotton, i think they just separate seed and beat the floof out of it with switches and then rolled into cigars) it's in our blood to use what is in front of us to create... Humans are wild...

DIY is the name of the game, at least my game right now. I am in the process of attempting to design and create a charkha-style kick spindle because I want to be free to use both hands for drawing the fibers.

It looks like PLA was used to print your parts. PLA (a type of plastic) can be brittle if stressed too hard. The final upright part that holds the spindle may be too thin to hold properly. It is being deflected while drafting then springs back. Also, PLA will melt if the spindle turns too fast! Use plenty of oil on all moving parts while in use. Wonderful machine. Least number of parts to do the job!

I have been looking at this as Dad is from Calcutta where he has seen the Charkha in use, I live in cotton growing country and this means I can get my hand on free cotton from the road side from the trucks passing through the town plus after harvesting the fields, the plants still have cotton left on them and so before the farmers cut the plants down and turned over back into the fields I can go out and pluck what is left on the bushes I already have a box full of cotton which I had planed on carding for quilt batting so the ideas of spinning it to use in my own hand quilting sounds like fun.

Having moved to the country a year ago, I'm looking into producing my own fiber and yarn, and at the moment I'm trying to learn as much as possible about spinning. The history that you and Radhika provide - both the charkha's history and Radhika's personal history - provide a context that makes the technical information meaningful on not just an intellectual level but an emotional one as well. I have recently assembled my 3D printed Charkha! Instead of the welding rods, I've used US 2 sized double pointed knitting needles for both the pins to hold the drive wheels in place, as well as the bobbins. I also used one of those elastic around the head no slip hair bands for the drive band, and a hair elastic to use as the bobbin spring It's working quite nicely with the Vlogmas box from 2021 with the cotton that was in the kit!

This was very interesting! I enjoy hearing from Professor Radhika and watching your putting together the charkha!

Thank you 😊. Insights into the Charka. I only recently saw one (a briefcase) online when looking into spinning wheels. To see the 3D version working (love the teal sparkly board) has been a revelation. Such simplicity.

Glad it was helpful! Just FYI on the space issue. I plan to make a wall bracket for this so I can hang it up on the wall out of the way when I'm not using it. I think it is a great design for saving space! 🧶💜🐑

I'm watching this while I practice the unsupported long draw with cotton punis and a takhli because I told myself once I get the hang of the long draw THEN I can get a charkha. But that park and draft method is how I normally spin. This is dangerous knowledge.

Thought you'd like to know that I've ordered a charkha from the company. I have a ton of cotton to spin.

It's not easy-to-use like some modern treadle wheels or espinners might be, but if you are a determined beginner and up for the challenge, go for it! You'll get it spinning! ❤🧶

Yay another Evie video! Very cool spinning! If you’re looking for more ideas or stuff to get you could try a walking great wheel for cotton & angora & wool even flax! I’d say it could do it all but I’m not that experienced. But I know Don’t even need to puni the cotton just card fluff and spin. I wonder if the great wheel is fastest compared to a regular double drive… despite its small capacity… cheers!

I am on the HUNT for a walking wheel. My area seems to have lots and lots of flax wheels but the walking wheels are either broken beyond what I'm willing to repair, or horribly over priced. Maybe some day I'll get my hands on one! I saw a blog post recently about rates of spinning with a CPW vs. a walking wheel. I'll try to find it again. 💜🧶🐑

It’s a mini great wheel

I’m going to try and make some poony (sp?). I’ve been saving the shedding under coat from my huskies, I have 4 of them. And the fiber length is very short. About 3 inches. I’ve had some luck with rolags but it’s been difficult. So hopefully the poony will work better.

I wonder how easy or difficult it would be to attach this to a simple rotary motor and just go crazy. Because I see this and I want to prep enough cotton yarn to make a brand new jacket out of agave fiber.

Thank you so much for this video! I have been trying to find more information for spinning cotton but there is so little out there. Do you know if this charkha would be able to spin a cotton/flax? Can cotton carders blend other fiber with the cotton to make poonies?

I think it would depend on the length of the flax. Tow flax could work, line flax would be very tricky.

I've purchased cotton balls from the dollar store it's not bad for spinning, question can you spin dk or chunky with this method or just lace weight yarn ?

The practice wool I spun is probably a DK if it was plied. The thing is just that since the charkha is designed for cotton, it puts so much twist in the fiber. Bulkier yarns would need to be drafted very quickly so they don't turn into a dense rope and the spindle is designed to hold thinner yarns so you wouldn't fit as much thicker yarn on it. But I think it is worth experimenting. Who knows what you might discover! 💜🐑🧶

Both or either one. I have plied some of this and found it was so simple to do on the charkha. You just flip the band the other way around the spindle and the spindle will turn in the reverse direction!

How did you get your spindle together? I have a book charkha, not 3D - and ordered 6 of the 3D spindles. The spindle does’t fit into the large whorl for the spindle (only 2 fit)

Have you tried spinning on a great wheel? The techniques between a great wheel and a Charkha are very similar.

Just bought a set…..I lived in Bombay for a year in the 80s and never learned about this charkha…. Sigh. Thank you for showcasing it . I have now rewatched and want to ask…. The welding rods…. Did they come with the kit or did you supply them?

Hi! The welding rods came with it. Isn't it amazing how after just a generation or two the connection to spinning can so significantly change? @@JillianEve here is where it gets weird…I was in south Texas last month and snuck into a cotton field to grab a few boles … I ended up with maybe 40….. and I have been the cotton jinny since, picking out the seeds and carding it. Now I know about punis!!!!!!! So I will rolag those to try my hand at spinning Texas cotton. I live in South Louisiana and will try to get some pink cotton seeds to grow a row and reach out to LSU for the weevil traps.

Yes, but it will take more treadling action to get all the twist you need. So it is possible but maybe not the most efficient. I would say...try it on your set up and see what happens! 💜🧶🐑😄

Did you read my mind somehow? I keep forgetting to ask if you spin cotton! I'm allergic to almost everything, but I want to spin. I found out that I'm ok with merino, but I'm kinda scared of buying other wool only to find out it's going to kill me. 😂 So that leaves cotton, but everyone says that it's hard.

@@clairerobertson2579 I literally just watched a video with a beautiful version of it made by John galen designs (Fb) The video is here in YT. It was spun with a singing bowl. Not cotton, but I imagine if you are going to be restricted in your choice of spindles... a beautiful one could one day be added to your repetoir.

Is anyone gonna talk about how the string makes a kind of treble cluf symbol at 17:55 ?

Spinning wheels were first developed in India. Indian textiles especially muslin fabric was famous around the world since Old Testament times (and mentioned therein). The British came to India, learned how to make the fabric took technology back to England and further mechanized it. They broke charkhas and looms and killed local artisans, banned the spinning and weaving of fabric in India and heavily taxed India on purchases of fabric that they were forced to import from England. So it wasn't dependence on England, it was taking back what was India's in the first place... Therefore an effective and peaceful way of telling England to go back and that they were not welcome to loot anymore. Relating half the story doesn't make sense of what Gandhi was doing 😊. Thanks for sharing your interest in charkhas. I do like what you do!

Thank you for further explaining the history. You are right that only half the explanation was in the video. If I could edit that again I would make it clear that the dependance on British cloth was forced upon India violently and intentionally. It is important to acknowledge that harm and I'm sorry I didn't make it more clear. I hope that through bringing some attention to the charkha, people will be inspired to do further research and learn more about India's history and culture. 💖🧶
