nathyq I think most people in England are led to believe that Ireland and N Ireland problems were more or less resolved in the 90s. With Trump, Brexit and the election, recent news of the problems got shuffled out of people's view. It's not that people in England don't care, we just didn't realise something was going on that we should be caring about.

ALWAYS be suspicious of Alistair Campbell. He has no credibility throwing a tantrum over anyone running this country, he's the spindoctor of death. And if you ask me, he's stirring here. He's emotively oversensationalizing about a Tory deal with the DUP when it warrants no more than a modest word of caution. Scare the people and license the unnecessary outrage. FC.

Not true. The deal with the DUP effectively contravenes the Good Friday Agreement. If the DUP are in the UK government how can the UK government be impartial on disputes in Stormont (the Northern Ireland assembly). The government in the Irish Republic has already kicked off about this. If the 2 decades long peace and reconciliation process breaks down and we have a return to the troubles will this squalid attempt to keep control of power have been worth it? Honestly, that's what's at stake. Brexit was always going to be a disaster for Northern Ireland and the peace there. That fact alone should have pushed made the politicians very wary about holding a referendum on the EU... but no they just wanted to shut parts of their own party up.

They have to allow whoever the people vote for democratically in elections to the Northern Ireland assembly. That's how democracy works. Both sides have been sponsors of violence, so in order to stop further violence the Good Friday Agreement makes the 2 governments the arbiters of any disputes - so that they don't spill out into violent confrontation. That's why the DUP can't be in the UK government, and why May is "playing with fire". It's disgusting.

Yorick Jenkins yes, like the other commenter stated, power needs to be constantly shared in northern Ireland which is why they introduced the STV voting system in NI which always results in a coalition so if they get in bed with the Tories in the UK it would throw NI into a constitutional crisis. This is why we need a codified constitution!

David Withers The DUP don't act in the interests of anyone but fundamentalists. They are opposed by just about every political party in the mainland and they are not very liked in Northern Ireland. A coalition with the DUP is a catastrophe for just about everyone.

WinnerorNot8 they're both as bad as each other. the DUP have close links with Loyalist paramilitaries (murderers, drug dealers and thugs) so let's not pretend they're not involved in facilitating violence in Northen Ireland. You can equally say Sinn Féin look for republican intrests thankfully the party also seem to have embraced progressive politics which is something the DUP apparently find impossible, that's what's finally going to destroy the DUP in a few decades when their traditional voting base have died out.

she isn't making a coalition. She's making a "minority" government with DUP's support as they have 10 seats. She can't have a coalition with them as that goes against the good friday agreement.

Basically, her party is still the largest party, but it isn't large enough to form a proper government. In order to attempt this she has allied herself with the DUP, an Irish party who are anti-women's rights, anti-abortion, anti-LGBT rights, creationists who think God created the world a few thousand years ago, and former terrorist extremists. Labour are calling for her to resign, Lib Dems are calling for her to resign, her own party the Tories are calling for her to resign, there's an online petition with over a million signatures calling for her to resign. She called this pointless election to gain a larger majority to go into Brexit but all she did was fuck everything up, lose her majority, lose a lot of her influence and power to Labour and is flaunting around like it's still a victory, when she left the election with less strength than before it, so she technically lost. She's completely deluded and thinks she's right for this country when both times she was put in power, she wasn't elected. It's on the brink of becoming a dictatorship now, with the extreme policies she plans. The only possible option to solve this, and Jeremy Corbyn and Labour are planning is, is to carefully get her to resign. The way this can be achieved is by a vote of no confidence. The DUP cannot vote on English laws due to an agreement that was made years and years ago during the Troubles, therefore when it comes to May's policies, they have no authority and she is in a minority (that rhymed, eyyy) so her policies can be voted out. If it becomes clear that her party has no actual power, and that her policies can just be voted out like that, there'll be a vote of no confidence, she'll be left with little choice but to resign, and a second election will be called for late 2017, which in my opinion, Labour has a good chance of winning, because the young vote is larger than it ever was before, and we know that the political system at the moment has failed, and we want to try and change that by voting for hope, instead of further conflict and war. Whether this will happen is unknown, because we're dealing with a crazy, deluded and power-hungry woman who is insane enough to think she won the election Sorry if that went on for too long, but hopefully it explains it well

Yes Labour did not win, it saw a massive swing and the highest turnout of young people in a generation however he has had to fight TWO leadership contests TWO!! If those lousy Labour MPs had got behind him from the start considering his huge majority and mandate, i could almost guarantee Labour would have won a majority!!!

The interviewer simply just did not understand the current politics. You must know more if you are going to interview about how the country runs otherwise what's the point, also the interviewer should learn to stop interrupting someone answering the questions put to them.

What was the will of the people regarding, 1) the Single Market, 2) the Customs Union, 3) the European Free Trade Area, 4) Freedom of Movement, 5) Passporting right for financial services in the City ??? All of these things will be wiped out by a Hard Brexit. The economics of it will be catastrophic. That's fine. I don't actually care, but then when we have 30 or 40% unemployment and raise the retirement age to 80 and start making people pay for basic health services and have record home repossessions and thousands of families living on the streets... should we ask the people what their will is then??? Or should we just carry on regardless because we asked them once last summer and they voted for a fantasy about money for the NHS. Of course the slender victory meant that whatever Nigel Farage and the Daily Mail deem an appropriately hard Brexit is the will of the people...? We've become a joke country and we're going to become a very much poorer joke country. Will of the people though, eh!

Straight talking from Campbell, he has gone up in my opinion watching this. At the time I hated the Blair government, but it doesn't seem so bad now compared to this shambles.

William King people are allowed to criticise their leader, Corbyns not a dictator nor a tyrant. I'm not a big fan of Corbyn but his current approach by ignoring the past to unite the factions of Labour to try and win the next election is smart and while I don't like him, I'm happy for him to stay as the leader. If the Tories had not put out the most poisonous manifesto in living memory at least, then it is quite likely they would have won easily. Look at the polls, the Tory vote collapsed as soon as it was published. Most Tory MPs didn't even campaign on the manifesto, they tried to campaign on local and personal vote issues and distance themselves from the manifesto that they were not even consulted about. May will last as long as the initial Brexit negotiations are over, many in the party want her to go now, but that would almost certainly mean a new election. If that is forced by the Tories they will lose, but if it is forced by Labour there is a good chance they will lose, the public does not like being asked to vote too often and blame the party they see as forcing it on them. The Tories will wait to see if Labour forces the issue on a matter where the DUP will not vote Tory, and only then get rid of her.

Yes, this wretched, treacherous man worked to destroy Corbyn and undermined his efforts for a year. "Stupid referendum"? Thanks a lot! The election which was stupid was the conspirators' against Corbyn focing a second leadership election, that was the stupid election.

Campbell could be a bit more generous about Corbyn. Campbell was wrong.

Corbyn, himself, did not add to all Labour's party infighting, Cambell did, as did many others from Blairs government. Followers of Corbyn may have retalliated, Corbyn himself has always called for cross party union.

When you're talking about the monumental f*ck up perpetrated by Tony Blair and his cronies including his spin doctor propagandist, Campbell, it's a bit different. That spilt milk may have dried up but it's still stinking up the house. To say the Iraq invasion didn't go according to plan is an understatement. Instead of a stable country that would've acted as a beacon to spread democracy in the region as planned, you can argue that the instability and sectarian violence in Iraq has directly contributed to the wider instability in the middle-east which has in turn led to the migrant crisis. A migrant crisis the scale of which hasn't been seen since World War 2. You can argue that the migrant crisis affected the vote for Brexit leading to Teresa May taking power who then called an election to obtain a mandate for Brexit negotiations......so here we are. Why should anybody let c*nts like Campbell or Tony Blair off the hook when you can still draw a line back to the actions they took nearly 15 years ago to what's happening today?

I can barely bring myself to listen to anything this man has got to say, leave alone Tony Blair. The Iraq War remains revelant because people's children died. Lest ye forget, there are children growing up without father or a mother because of that war. Blair, Campbell and any other architects of that war need to stand trial end of.

I have talked to a lot of people about the election, people in the street, people in pubs and very very few of them even mentioned Brexit. This election was about Austerity, stagnant wages, The NHS and the Conseravtives dis-connect and vilification of the working classes.

It is not a rejection of hard brexit. Theresa just ran the campaign awfully, and paid the price.

Towards Election Day though, it was noted that people spoke less about Brexit on the doorsteps and started to talk more about healthcare, education and policing. This election is not all about Brexit and it doesn't have to dominate the political narrative. It's important, sure, but let's remember there are public services we have to protect that are far more important than our access to the Single Market (and I say that as a firm Remainer).

Why are we subjected to so many interviewers who want to talk more than those being interviewed !! There is always a limited time for interviews and I for one would like to hear much from the interviewee. Here's a thought, how about trying to use concise questions about a subject of interest. Dear interviewer if you're wondering what was wrong with your interview, strap in: - interrupting an answer for you to say you have pictures of May doing something completely unrelated to her job. WOW!! Guess what, I know the BBC have cameras and are probably following the PM around in case something interesting happens. I don't care whether she goes to church on a Sunday morning. THAT IS NOT NEWS!! - quotes from the DUP and from Campbell about Corbyn took an awfully long time to read out. Every heard of summarising for brevity. If Campbell challenges your summations you have the quotes to refer to and you're then seen as keeping him honest. Instead you droned ( yes - it was a drone) on and on and I got the point you were asking really early on. Really really early on!!! - Campbell makes an interesting and controversial point about conservative PM's having referendums and elections only for self serving reasons, so not putting the country first. It may be that most all conservatives are like that. He develops this with what he sees as further evidence with May inviting the DUP to buddy up with her. A possible outcome of that could be very VERY dangerous. Thinking about it for a moment, there was also the Big Society and 'we're all in this together' from Cameron and the 'nasty party' label that stuck a bit. What did you do when he came out with this - NOTHING !!!!! Yes, I know he's likely putting bait in the water for you to take, BUT IT"S STILL A WORTHWHILE POINT!!! It's precisely the question I would like discussed and you ignored it - well done!! - I'm afraid that for me toward the end of the interview you did miss Campbell's point and to be heard to scoff at him is unprofessional. It just made you sound like you were politically sniping at him by reminding him what he got up to. Even though I think he did do a lot of what you were accusing him of, that it really isn't the point and not why he's there. History does show that Blair has in fact been gone for some time. Campbell was never powerful enough to change attitudes across society for ever. The current crop of incumbents are free thinking adults after all. It's not Campbell's fault if they decide the act similarly and you just showed temper there. A very poor interview.

Excellent insight by Mr Campbell, and as ever, extremely poor interviewing trying to score points with Campbell when he is trying to present a, I think, very insightful view of the mess our great country is currently in.

I like how at 5:15 Mr. Campbell is complaining about how the press is trivializing the issues to a popularity contest (paraphrasing here) and the hostess replies by going right back into the trivializing the issue.
