    He's right. Got mine 10 years ago. It had 98k miles on it, beautiful condition, but I paid $19k for an eight year old vehicle with that mileage. Was concerned that I made a mistake. Now it's 18 years old, 263k miles, and with minimal maintenance, still running beautifully. I've done a couple things, radiator, front bearings, but it's ended being one of the cheapest vehicles I've ever owned all in all. Not as pretty now, I had five kids grow up in it. My daughter is driving it mainly now.

    I have a 2004 GX470 that I purchased new. It has 107,000 miles on it with a complete service history. All service work has been performed by the Lexus dealer I purchased it from. Scotty's fuel mileage estimates are pretty much spot on. It is a gas hog, but it is rock solid reliable. I get my oil changed every 5,000 miles , using only Mobil 1 full synthetic since the very first oil change. My GX has been the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. Things don't break on it. I have had the timing belt replaced twice...once at 50,000 miles in 2012 because the water pump developed a leak and had to be replaced. The dealer recommended I replace the timing belt at the same time, because most of the cost of replacing both is the labor in getting to the area where they are in the engine bay. I had both replaced again in April of this year, not because there were any issues, but because it had been ten years since I had it replaced the last time. Lexus recommends the timing belt replacement every 100,000 miles OR ten years. One issue with the GX, plus some other Toyota models of this time period was the dashboard cracking and getting sticky. They had a special extended warranty on it for a while. I noticed a small crack in mine well after that extended warranty expired, in 2021. Being that it's Lexus and I had a very long and extensive relationship with my dealer, I called Lexus corporate about the dash. Short answer, Lexus agreed to cover the whole cost of parts and labor to replace my dashboard. My dealer gave me a new Lexus to drive for the few hours it took for them to complete the job. After 18 years of owning this vehicle, I'm still a satisfied Lexus customer.

    Reminds me of my 2007 Honda Pilot EX-L Navigation with 4WD. Has a 3.5 SOHC VTEC V6 with 244HP with a 5 speed automatic. Bought it for $3200 in December of 2019 and the timing belt was done at 194,000 miles and I got it with 196,000 miles and I’m about 40,000 miles or more on the timing belt and I’ve owned my Pilot for 2 and 2/3 years. I’ve had to replace the brakes. Tires, wheels, AC compressor, spark plugs, drive belt, fuel injectors serviced, drivers side window motor and regulator, PCM update, decarboned entire engine, things like that but it’s still going strong at 238,000 miles and it’s been a good vehicle so far. I recommend the 2005-2008 pilots because the 2003 was plagued with that horrible 4 speed automatic. But the 2004 and newer pilots are really good choices too.

    Personally, I would move onto the Lexus GX with the 4.6L V8 at this point. They are absolutely proven and are newer enough that issues are still some years away. 20 years+ no matter what the vehicle is you are going to start having problems, especially if that vehicle lived in the snow. I can say I have a 2008 Honda Odyssey EXL that has been in Texas it's entire life and it is still in excellent shape with 191,680 miles. I bought it when my oldest was three years old and now is driving it. Crazy!

    The GX460 is more complex, it also has a power 3rd row that can’t be removed to make more space, and can get stuck. For those of us who repair these ourselves, older but less complicated is better (up to a point). My current daily driver is a 98 LS400, haven’t had a professional mechanic touch it in 8 years and 100k mikes (purchased at 105k, senior owned). It has needed work, but hasn’t left me stranded once.

    2005 was the last year it accepted 87 octane via Lexus documentation. Engine was slightly tweaked beginning 2006 model years. I’m not a mechanic, I’m not giving sure fire proof, but every mechanic I’ve spoken to says even the 2006 and newer are perfectly fine with 87 octane. The computer systems will adjust accordingly. Though any engine knocking (highly unlikely) you should immediately begin putting premium fuel in. Supposedly many luxury brands state “premium fuel” for three reasons: 1) burns cleaner, therefor better for average emission requirements for company 2) higher octane typically boosts performance (negligible increase) 3) luxury buyers (new buyers) get the impression “premium required” means a better vehicle (marketing)

  • @samanazadi3489

    @samanazadi3489

    @@JH-qy7zw you're right. No problem with regular fuel. As you said premium fuel (high octane) burns cleaner which means probably near 100% of the fuel in cylinder burns and it runs all the time like that because there is no knocking due to high octane. But with regular fuel, ECU injects more fuel to prevent knocking and that more amount of fuel keeps engine in an ideal temperature. I mean as long as there is no knocking your fine with regular fuel and it might be even better than premium fuel in hot days and areas. Also 87 is a very good number of octane. In some countries 80-84 octane fuel is labeled as premium fuel !!

    You can change the timing belt yourself. Take your time, use the repair manual and do step by step, it is not too hard. Shop wanted $1300 to do the timing belt change in my lexus, they were going to use mid quality after market parts. Purchased the belt, water pump, tensioners, idler pulleys, drive belts, cam and crank oil seals for just under $400, all OEM high quality parts, toyota/lexus genuin, the tensioner was Aisin, Belts all Mitsubushi etc, the best parts. So I saved $900 and the lexus runs smooth as butter. And I do not have to worry about it for another 100K. By they way, the old belt was 10 years old, had just over 100K on it and when I pulled it out, it looked almost new, great shape, markings were all gone, but the entire belt did not have a single crack, not what I was expecting, I could have probably just let it go a couple more years no problem. Shop said they could have it done in 3 hrs, would have purchased a parts kit for maybe $250, so they were basically going to charge $350hr for labor when you do the math.

    Bought a used 30k mile GX460 a month ago. Fantastic car. V8 power, ~20mpg on the interstate and slightly more on 60mph state highways. Plan to keep it a very long time.

    A 100 series landcruiser with the turbo intercooled 4.2 6 cylinder diesel would be better in my opinion and most Australians I bet would agree. The car your reviewing is a prado in Australia with either a 4litre v6 petrol or a 3 litre diesel. The proper cruiser is a better car. The 100 series was the best of the best.

    HOLY MACKEREL ATF FLUID IN THIS CAR!!!! Love all your videos Scotty. You Sir, are the man! Keep up the great work. I just purchased an 05 gx470 with 108k mi on it. I wanted to change the fluids, specifically the ATF fluid. I have seen all these videos of people dropping the pan, hooking hoses to the return line, draining 4qt and then cranking the car to get 2qt out then put 2qt in etc etc until you get all the fluid out. Now I've seen your videos on doing ATF fluid changes and you recommend not doing a flush...would this constitute as a flush and with 108k mi on it should I not do a full fluid change and just drain what comes out of the drain plug and put that much back in and do a 30k mi interval change? Hope this question comes across your eyes! Thank you Sir!

    05 GX470 Sport w/ KDSS 1 of less than 10% ever made 05’s also have the highest HP engine of the 470s, perfect pair. Even at 165k miles she drives like an absolute dream! The black wood sport interior looks modern. I Feel lucky to have came across such a great car for the family that’s gonna last years

    Yep hes right, the only one close to the same power is 13-16....depends on who tests it. Also heard the 470 rides better than 460, just doesnt sound right. get that carbon air filter out of the top of the air box. Has NO use, robs power. Takes 5min, pop out with flat head.

    With proper maintenance that is a half million mile motor. Almost bought one last fall. Spent six months researching the 470. Opted for the Tacoma TRD Off Road. But still pondering the purchase.

    Wish we had these in Australia. Instead we get one called a Landcruiser Prado with either a 4 cyl diesel or the 4.0 litre V6 and lower spec levels than a Lexus. The top of range in this series was called a Grande which was almost Lexus spec but not quite.
