I moved to a DFW suburb in North Texas five years ago. I've seen countless people from CA, IL and NY move here and move out in less than a year. Newcomers need to factor things other than low housing costs into their decision making to move here. The newcomers that stayed here are mostly unhappy and unable to move. Do your homework before moving to the DFW Metroplex....it's not for everyone

I grew up in Dallas. After living there since 1978 I finally left last year. I sold my home where I lived for the past 20 years. I left for several reasons. The big reason is property taxes. I owned my home free & clear. Due to property values skyrocketing over the past 10 to 15 years I was paying close to $11K a year in property taxes. That is with a homestead exemption & protesting my values with the DCAD every year. My taxes still went up. Back in 2021 my home was burglarized. It took the police 56 hours-over two days-to finally come out to my home & take a report. I then realized it was time for me to search for greener pastures. I have always loved the idea of living in the Southwest. I had been on trips out to New Mexico & Arizona when I was a child. I didn't really want to leave Texas since there is no state income tax. After doing research & talking to a realtor I finally bought a house in El Paso. Now I have been here for almost a year. I have a 7 year old home-it's basically new. I bought it for well under $200K. The homes here where I live would easily be $400K to $500K in Dallas. I no longer have to deal with cutting my grass or weeds since it's desert. I have rock landscaping which is zero maintenance. No trees to deal with. No storms other than some high winds at times and dust storms. No tornados. All the electric lines are buried underground where I live so not once has my electricity gone out even during the occasional high winds we get. I get to see beautiful open desert about a block behind my house with the mountains in the distance. It's so much better looking than the flat concrete jungle of Dallas. The police & fire departments are only about a mile or so away from my house. Last year we had 38 homicides in El Paso. Compare that to 246 in Dallas. I have seen very few homeless people compared to Dallas. Part of me will miss Dallas. It used to be a great place. But now it's just a cookie cutter city that has lost it's charm. Dallas no longer feels like the Dallas I remember as a child. It's so much different than it was 30 or even 20 years ago. It no longer feels like Texas. One thing I definitely do not miss is the humidity. Here in El Paso we have basically no humidity. It's super dry. Even Summers are more tolerable as night time temperatures are comfortable with no humidity. El Paso is a hidden gem. I hope it stays that way.

Me & My Husband We are in Keller/Southlake Area of Texas, and you are surely right about the transportation and cars as being a Texas resident you surely have to be able to drive and have a car and a reliable car at that because one thing about this state you have to constantly drive everywhere you go and I am not from Texas. I am from New Orleans, Louisiana We Move here to Texas 10 Years Ago Because of Job Opportunities & Becoming a Business Owner was Much Bigger & Better Than Louisiana However, everywhere Out here in Texas you have to drive every single place no matter how far or how close it is, and if you are a person that does not like to drive at all even if you do know how to drive and have a car it is very unattractive you feel like you are being forced to drive all the time when you might not even be in the mood to be on the road for about 35 minutes to like about an hour going somewhere that is needed to be going somewhere and when you are on the road, you feel like you spent half your day on the interstate going and let alone coming back home and all of that traffic going and coming. To Me Texas is Not All What it is Cracks to Be. Again if you are a person that is coming from other states and cities that you are not used to doing all of that long Jeopardy of driving you better think again before coming to Texas. This is why they are always doing info-structure on interstates here in Texas because for some reason, Texas look like they want people to constantly be out on regular roads and interstates constantly, you are more on The Roads than you enjoy yourself here in the state of Texas. TEXAS IS ALL ABOUT WORKING 6 JOBS & A LOT OF DAMN DRIVING YOU BARELY GOT TIME TO RELAX, GET ANY REST & ENJOY YOUR DAMN SELF WORKING & DRIVING TAKES UP ALL YOUR DAMN TIME HERE IN TEXAS STATE. THINK 🤔 🤔 🤔 💭 💭 5 TIMES SERIOUSLY IN DEEP THOUGHTS BEFORE MAKING A PERMANENT MOVE TO TEXAS.

@BryanFerra Just left Tampa after 13 years. It is boring and you will not be going to the beach daily or partying like you do on vacation. That is a misconception that people have when moving to FL. That is just not feasible for most working class people. Housing (apartments/homes) are also high as hell (similar to Dallas and probably more in some areas), but jobs do NOT pay the same there. There are not many companies headquartered there as they are in Dallas. Once you do the handful of touristy type stuff a few times, you will see its much smaller than Dallas and it gets played out quick. Property insurance is hard as hell to get, costly.

Coming from the east coast I hated Dallas, the heat and humidity, the traffic, bad drivers, complicated freeways, property taxes, hail storms, high energy bills, it’s just a big flat boring state. If you’re not shopping or going out to eat there is really nothing to do in Dallas. Four years was enough for me, I moved back east. Seems like there was no middle class class in Dallas, if you don’t make at least 80k a year don’t move to Dallas. Jobs are plentiful but low paying.

I moved from south Florida to east Texas in 2020. Texas may have tornados but Florida has hurricanes. It is highly improbable that your house will be hit by a tornado, but if you live in Florida long enough you will get hit by a hurricane. I pay a LOT less in property taxes here in East texas than I did. In Florida as housing is worth so much less. The weather is certainly nicer most of the year, but there are certain times of the year where the weather is nicer here than in florida. As for you moving to Tampa, I would NOT move to Tampa. Tampa is the Houston of Texas, it is a shithole. South Florida is probably the best area to live, but right now it is extremely expensive....

Hello. I am considering relocating to Houston or Dallas. However, I am stuck between the two. I currently reside in North Carolina. I will be turning 30-years old this year, I am a black male, with a background in Journalism. Any pointers?

Addison is good for nightlife. Plano and Frisco are nice and upscale. Arlington, Grand Prarie and Ft Worth are the cheapest cities to live. Allen is also nice and has a good outlet mall.

I just got back from Dallas and man a week felt like a month. Ive never been more disappointed in a major city than Dallas. Very dated feel. Like the last major update was late 80s/early 90s and they decided they're good. Don't even get me started on the airport. I felt like i went back in time 20 years being their. Someone described it as souless and I can't agree more. Every block felt like the same block, over and over. Road were absolutely awful, filled with potholes and the interstate system is just a mess. Houston and San Antonio are much more enjoyable. Very dispappoting city. Will never return

Come down to Vegas. Our family who visits from Dallas always happy to be here and jealous of all the awesome food choices and groceries trying to be the best to stay in business and people around the world want to be here. Lake mead is still plenty of water and fishing and will not evaporate in 50 plus years.
