I wake up and I am thankful and content with where I am and what I have. It does not mean not also having more dreams, more curiosity, more to explore, more to do, more to learn etc. This is a GOOD THING. It is very possible to be both thankful and content and also to continue to have desires, dreams and goals. You do not need religion to have gratitude.

They think there are only 144,000 places in heaven (because of Revelations, also the Maya used the 144,000 number as well) but heaven consists of 1 billion worlds so there are way more places than that. My extremely religious Christian friends (who are aware that I don't believe in the Bible) have always listened to my horrendous physical problems which have no known cure that led to having deep emotional and financial problems and they have told me for YEARS now every time they see me: that God has a plan for me, that he loves me, that everything happens in God's time, and they will pray for me. I finally snapped at one of them and said, "I wish he'd fucking get on with this plan of his then, so I don't have to keep suffering while he apparently does NOTHING to help me!" I said to her, "Don't you think if your prayers were going to work, they would have done so by now?" "Why does this God need you and everyone else around me to incessantly beg him to help me?" I instantly felt regret because I knew these things were being said to me with good intentions, but at the same time I felt justified since I had bottled that up for a long time and knew the things she was saying were to comfort her... not me. I always felt like I was the one there to comfort her about my situation when I was the one that was supposed to be getting the comfort. If she wanted to pray for me for the millionth time, she didn't have to burden me with it. If they incessantly bring up their religious beliefs, I'm supposed to be appreciative and let them say it, even if what they say hurts me instead of helps me. If I ask them not to say it since they know I don't believe what they do, I am told I am being a jerk to their feelings. When I want to comfort someone, I tell them I am sorry for their loss or sorry they are experiencing pain or problems. I assess whether there is anything physically, emotionally, or financially I can do immediately for them to lighten their load and I do it ASAP. I ask them if there is anything else I can do. I tell them to let me know if they think of something later and assure them I am not just offering plattitudes and that I REALLY WANT to help, if I can. If there is nothing else I can do, I ask if I can give them a hug or sit and hold their hand. I give them time to greave if they sèem to need it, or try take their mind off it temporarily if it seems like it would help them. If I can think of something funny to say that may help them, I say it before I leave. I try to just let them know I care.

Thank you for pointing out what is wrong with "I'll pray for you" in the context of someone whose beliefs you don't agree with. It is implicitly saying that there is something defective with the person who somehow needs your sanctimonious public announcement of a prayer. It is honestly an announcement of superiority over a person. Kristi is exactly right: If you are sincere, and believe God needs your prayer in order to do something to change a person, keep the announcement to yourself and just do it, feel perfectly free to think that's going to be effective. You know that's not the actual point of an exchange like the one we heard here, the actual point is in announcing it to the person. Christians: stop mincing and prancing behind the "I'll pray for you to see the truth" sanctimony and just say "I'm not ok with your perspective being different than mine it makes me feel [insert emotion here] and because I feel discomfort, I wish for you to change so that you conform to what I think you should be." Own it. You can't because when said honestly you know how grossly egocentric and out of line it is.

Exactly. Why tell someone you’re praying for them to believe when they already told you they don’t believe? Who besides the Christian is benefiting from this public announcement? I feel like if they really cared they would just pray on their own time without making a big display of saying they’re going to pray. Strangely this seems kind of like what Jesus was speaking against when he called out religious leaders for making a display of their prayers in public.

One of the most arrogant things a theist can say is, "I will pray for you," followed closely by, "I feel sorry for you." These phrases just drip with self-righteousness. Even if your salvation is their sincere, _conscious_ concern, the subtext is still, "I'm right, and you're wrong. I'm going to heaven, and you're going to hell. I'm smart, and you're foolish. _I'm better than you!"_ Side Note: Maybe it's just me, but only a _man_ (who doesn't have to carry or bear children) would use _having kids_ as an example of how people are never content with _enough._ Then again, being compelled to, "Be fruitful, and multiply," is arguably why so many people _continue_ to procreate even when they _don't_ actually want _more._ Moreover, the idea that faith in Jesus keeps people from constantly wishing for more _utterly contradicts_ the motivation of _eternal heavenly rewards,_ not to mention mega-church wealth. 14:54 - Did he just admit that God _creates_ tragedy in order to motivate greater active engagement with Him through prayer...that _our_ suffering is _God's_ manipulative clickbait? The more I contemplate the God of the Bible, the more I can't help but to compare Him to the capricious...and abusive...gods of Greek and Roman mythology, _and_ the more I learn about Hellenistic influences on the religions and scriptural literature of conquered Middle Eastern cultures, the more it makes perfect sense that the God of Abraham would behave that way.

@@siriuspleiades4503 Did you read my whole comment or just the first sentence? When, "I will pray for you," is an analog for, "I wish you well," there is _not_ anything arrogant about it. Both essentially mean (in less efficient but more accurate terms), "I desire for good things to happen in your life." However, on more than one occasion, I've heard, "I will pray for you," in a way that clearly communicates, "I'm better than you because I believe what I believe, and you don't." _That_ is arrogant...and frankly a bit delusional. As for praying to God versus wishing to a genie, you make an excellent point. Both approaches involve imaginary, magical beings for which there is zero objectively observable, consistently demonstrable evidence. Moreover, according to statistical meta-data on the efficacy of prayer, _both_ approaches are statistically no more successful than random chance _and_ are utterly _useless_ without _action_ on the part of the person saying it.

You’re so patiently.. I’ve tried to find some common ground with my family to start from… at least one starting point on which we agree and go from there.. not to convince them, but just so they could see, follow or somewhat emphatize with the deep spiritual struggles someone got with Christian indoctrination, and why someone can reject this religion on very sincere grounds. Why rejecting these things can exactly be a humble and almost pious thing to do. But there’s just no way.. The best thing about my Calvinist Christian indoctrination is that I know what it is to liberate yourself from it. What a joy! I enjoy every day the fruits of having conquered and cut through all these anxieties and incongruities of Christianity. I kinda feel sad about the irrational hopes and anxieties of Christians who want me back in their religion. But it’s not my problem or responsibility, it’s a consequence of the pitch dark side of the religion they choose to not question. Once you understands how the illusionist performs his trick, how he fools you, it’s impossible to think once again that it is real magic.

Here lately I've started to think about that and noticed that people that say they will pray, whether they do or not, don't really have a good grasp of what they are praying for and/or why and/or how it aligns to their make-believe god's will. @ereyes6718 I know we have all we need to know, because the truth is there, I read it, I experience it in various ways. You know what is unfortunate about science, which has accomplished some really amazing things, is that it will never be able to explain how the universe came into existence, because we know, without doubt or reservation of thought, that something can't come from absolute nothing... zero. Nothing simply can't create something. Therefore if nothing existed in the beginning, nothing would currently or ever exist, but we do exist, so since nothing can't create something, and we exist, then something must exist, it has to because we exist, and if it exists then it could have only always existed because there is no other possibility and this something is God, for only he, who is so far beyond our comprehension. Like quantum x 1x10¹⁰⁰⁰⁰⁰⁰⁰. So how are we even going to begin to understand something so far beyond anything we could ever begin to consider a sliver of understanding... on his level, we could never, bur he is the one who has existed for ever, and it is he who will always exist. Behold the wisdom of God the Father. That is the fact we alm live with. That is the only reality, because otherwise it would be nothing and we simply wouldn't ever exist, but we do. Praise be to God, for all comes from him. I hope you get to know him. He awaits for all, good or bad, week or strong... he cares not, just turn and he is there.

What is monumental and most important is,, Realizing that your religious beliefs are not truly your own. The ideas that were impressed upon you as a child are not based on your experience, self discovery or independent investigation or non-bias observation. As you become more aware of this fact,, you realize that the adults around you went through the same conditioning/brainwashing process as you have. So that means that no one around you is thinking as an individual. No one is applying empathy or any level of critical thinking. About a belief system that they hold so dear without question. Even though they see the hypocrisy in their group. As well as what they are learning from their group/church organization. Then, when you challenge the group,, you risk being ostracized. The fear of being rejected from the group,, can be scary. So I congratulate this woman for taking on those challenges and sharing her understanding with the world. It would seem that she is becoming and contributing the way she believes love and peace and unity should be shared. Without the religious and scary dogma of religious organizations. Freedom is priceless‼️

I had to watch every action and word that came out of me, and it was biblical!!! My heart still believed in Jesus when I left so testimonies really helped me out in the beginning. Afterwards I got into evidence, not necessarily about the religion itself, but evolution and seeing how stuff actually works. Thank you for asking out loud how useless prayer is, especially the part when someone says "I'll pray for you." It's one thing if a person prays for someone and even I won't bother if someone does it. But the moment they say it out loud, it shows that they want to change you, no matter of hey say otherwise - because otherwise they wouldn't have said it. Like we know that there are people out there who pray for unbelievers constantly and they don't tell us because they are somewhere else in the world. But the announcement, that's what's bothering. Some genuinely want a person to change and some - and I think that is very sad - want to be aknowledge by what they do. They want to feel better when people say "thank you" for being told that they are gonna be prayed for. Like that is so sad and even arrogant at some level.

I went from being an Ex-Christian to spirituality. I believe in life after death. Christianity is a manmade religion, manmade fear, manmade everything. Humanity needs to pray for Christians. They really need our prayers. Seriously, pray for these people will WAKE UP one day.

I don’t blame you. I fell in love with the new thought perspectives of God. I however don’t do any religion nor will have boyfriends or friends who’s heavily involved into religions of any kind moving forward in my life. I don’t have time for that. It’s like Christianity strips you away from being human and a lot of them are ungrateful of life, they don’t want to accept there’s no hell.

It's funny how simple logic crushes doctrine . Why can't they just answer the questions it's simple . I'll tell you why it's because they realize that what they believe is ridiculous and so they stumble And do not have a ready defense as Josh McDowell puts it. It's almost as if they have blinders on . Me being a former devout Christian for 35 years (Leaving it at 35 years of age now 47), It's hard for me to look back and understand how I could have believed and how I justified belief. Even after 12 years an atheist, I'm still learning how negatively I was and am affected by doctrines of Christianity. The most recent and most troublesome, the belief of original sin, born into sin, hell bound by default, undeserving of our father in heavens love, we are as filthy rafs compared to God's awesomeness, we are of our father the devil...etc. being indoctrinated into such a horrible view of ourselves has longterm damage to our self esteem, value, image, and often hinders our personal relationships. We can become depressed, codependent, people pleasers, and ripe for any narcissistic personality to pick. My anger at how much time I wasted on praying and pleading and begging God to forgive me and asking him to have mercy on me in case I did Christianity wrong or believed the wrong thing, well it sometimes shows. I'm not angry at those who raised me or those in my life, bc they were the same as I. I'm angry at myself for being so ignorant and I limited my one life to a narrow experience for 35 years.

It's perfectly fine if you want to believe in religion God you have the right to believe whatever you want to believe just keep it to yourself and worry about yourself but that's not good enough for Christians once they find out that you have doubts that you are a nonbeliever they think it's their job to reconvert you save you convince you that what they believe is right and if you don't believe what they believe you're going to go to hell when you die are you serious get real man there's no possible way you could know that why because you read it in the Bible give me a break man you've allowed other human beings who presented you with a book and told you what to believe and you're totally convinced no doubts you've never questioned the validity of the book the motivation of the people who created it it's amazing to me how easy it is to manipulate the human mind seek the truth know the truth and the truth will set you free well the truth is is that the truth doesn't set you free you're still bound by the laws of nature the only thing that seems to set you free is death a return to that dark place where you were before you were born and that's the truth I have no reason whatsoever to lie for dust thou art and dust thou shalt return to this is one truth that the Bible makes perfectly clear

It seems that this man had some sort of burnout from too high expectations, too fast life pace or he simply grew and changed as a person. He should have simply gone to a psychologist or evolved as a person, changed jobs etc but it seems that religion got him at a moment he was vulnerable to fool him that religion was the only option to escape an unhappy situation. It's so sad that people think that it's either unhappiness or religion. Life without religion is the best thing a human can do for himself/herself, just like Kristi I can not fathom how christians force pray and pray for us to have an unhappy life, while we are very content and in peace with ourselves already. Great job Kristi. I hope it helped at least some religious people understand how wrong it is to force prayers on others.

@Niko Black as it is written Matthew 16:4: a wicked and adultress generation seek a sign but none will be given except that of the prophet Jonah. Which as you know Jonah was in the whale 3 days and Jesus also rose on the 3rd day. But the fact is we all have need of a savior for our sins. As Jesus said, the healthy have no need of a physician but the sick do. The world has all these questions but they gloss over the fact that its our sins that condemn us to hell. The price of sin is death. That is what death is, "wages", Romans 6:23.

@Niko Black ok we'll start with this. What does your conscience say? Does it not convict you when you do wrong? And how do we know right from wrong? Where do morals come from? As it is written, I would not know right from wrong unless it was written in the law or the ten commandments. Morals come from God. He has given each one of us a conscience that bears this truth that way we are without excuse on the day of judgment. Thats why you should read the Bible and believe it. It is God's love letter to man. And tells you how to find everlasting life.

Kristi, love your stuff. You are simply brilliant in the thought process as well as the presentation. . The sad part of the conversation is perspective. As a former Christian, who could not imagine a world without God or that people cannot believe that there is a God. I understand that it is hard for Christians to grasp what you are talking about without the desire to challenge their belief. Instead what happens is that they need to articulate one's disbelief into terms that are palatable to them which does not reflect the heart of those who have left. One thing that sometimes gets lost in the shuffle is that when a Christian prays that someone will come to God. It is usually a desire that calamity befalls the individual and that they will coming begging for help to God. It is in effect a curse that brings their imaginary blessing. Now that I am on the other side, in a world that there is no evidence for God. Instead I see a faith that has no clothes. Once one sees that it cannot be unseen.

You dealt with his nonsensical arguments so well and with such patience and kindness. I am an ex-Catholic and my father is a Lutheran turned evangelical. He makes these same types of arguments to convince me to go back to Christianity because he "fears for my soul." All that happens is we get into a shouting match because he tells me that I am wrong because my 'paradigm ' is flawed but I get so frustrated because his arguments are not based on facts or even an understanding of the Bible. These arguments upset me because they are so manipulative, because the person judging you can't back up what they say and because you don't subscribe to their ideas, you are the person in the wrong. You are never the 'winner' in these situations. Thanks for sharing this.
