idk about the UK, but I'm 38 in the US and I have 18 and 13 year old kids. This movie is timeless in how it depicts high school. because here? school is 10000% that clique-y. I don't know. For me at least, high school is just stressing about tests, grades, assignments, exams, non-stop. But maybe that's because I go to a school known to be full of smart kids and competitive as hell. Like, at my school, no one cares about cheerleaders and football players. The most popular kids are usually the ones with the most AP classes and highest grades. Honestly, the most accurate portrayal of my high school might actually be Rainbow High, which is something I never thought I'd say. (although, seriously, there's enough stressing in it that for them to make an eleven minute compilation of the characters stressing over deadlines)

Mean Girls is a social commentary on what it means to be popular. It was based on a book on the psychology of Teenage Girls. I actually read the book for a paper in high school and the book followed a girl who went from a weirdo in middle school to the most popular girl in her high school. But the book pointed out that popular didn't mean beloved, it meant unapproachable to most except the other unapproachable people. Mean Girls was also considered a spiritual successor to Heathers. The story was inspired by the psychology novel and Heathers. It works well as a movie because you don't actually particularly like anyone.

American highschools do have it's clicks but not to this lvl of extreme like this movie though I will say at the time of this movie's release some schools where like this (less extreme versions) but not so much anymore. Mine was like this but not this extreme. We did have popular athletic kids who did a lot of the bulling but mostly people just went to classes and hung out with friends during lunch &/or after school

If I had a nickel for every SNL alum that’s in this movie, I’d have 2 nickels, which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice

This movie is middle school tuned down. This movie is my life. I was unfortunately the lesbian friend, and my friend didn’t stop being a plastic. This is the experience of most middle school girls. This movie is SCARILY ACCURATE just a bit too old. The difference is that your bullied a lot more, and especially so if your smart, pretty, and/or creative. Girls are this dramatic, and petty. It f-ing sucks. (In America)

I have to tell you, America is not like this, at least not in my experience. Everything is really chill and there isn’t ever “whole school drama” like high school is too big for there to be a popular kid. Sure, there are mean people, but there isn’t really a “school bully” or anything
