    One of the most humble, down to earth KZreadrs in the car scene. I think you are a genuine nice guy and I wish I lived in the States so I could meet you and see the Lambo in person. Been following you for a few years now and the progress this channel has seen is nothing short of amazing. Keep up the great work for us petrolheads to enjoy!

    Do yourself a favor. For the wall between the office and the shop, go with a double-stud 2x4 wall. Bottom plates should be pressure-treated and rated for ground contact. You can go lightweight steel stud, just understand you may have rust problems in the future. You're going to want to insulate. Don't waste money on Fiberglass. Use Rockwool Safe'N'Sound stuff, as you're going for sound insulation, rather than thermal insulation. You'll get a bit of thermal insulation out of the deal anyhow. Also, you will want a fire barrier. Double 5/8" drywall between the double studs and 1/2" for the interior and exterior facings (use greenboard (water-resistant drywall) for the course closest to the floor) Also note, on the shop-side, lay down pencils or something similarly thick on the floor, pointing in towards the studs. This will act as a spacer to lift the drywall up off the floor so that if any water gets in and sits on the floor, it has to get pretty nuts before it starts soaking the drywall (belt and suspenders approach when used with greenboard). For additional soundproofing use this stuff to glue the first layer to the studs. www.greengluecompany.com/ At the mating surface of the two sheets of drywall Remember, you're going to essentially be doing this for a ceiling as well. Also, talk with one of your neighbors to do a sound test with you. Close your garage doors. Stand over by the windows in what's going to be your shop area. Have the neighbor get LOUD for a minute and see how much sound bleed you have. We help you determine if you want to build fascia walls on the interior of the shop office or leave them bare to the insulated steel. If you're getting lots of bleed-through, go with 2x4 walls and Rockwool. That should render your office fairly quiet. If you still get sound bleed through the windows, you can mask it with heavy curtains or built soundproofing insets. And if you're going to use it as a recording studio for videos, invest in foam soundproofing panels like these: www.amazon.com/Acoustic-Panel-Wedge-Studio-Soundproofing/dp/B07C94ZZ57 Also, you can probably afford to AC the office. Avoid the window units if you can. They're loud and very power hungry and would drown out most recording. They also are leaky, so you lose a lot of the cooling benefit. Additionally, they'e a security problem, as someone can pry out double-hung window with an AC unit in it fairly easily. Maybe look at a cheap ductless mini-split. Just two coolant lines running through the wall. Mount the compressor to the wall on the outside. Then you have a nice, quiet air handler on the inside. Don't DIY (kills your warranty). Spend the extra money to have it installed. Wish I could talk to you about electrical, but that's outside my purview.

    @truthsmiles

    All great advice from @Hyperstrike. I would also suggest clearing all of your "not trivial to undo" plans with your landlord, like the epoxy you mentioned and the office space. Building walls usually means driving anchors into the concrete, and there are different kinds that cause more or less ugliness if the walls are ever removed. I'll add that you might consider what you want to do with the space above the office. If there's ANY chance it's going to be storage for heavy things or a potential second floor/sleeping space, you'll have to build accordingly.

  • @PhotonHerald

    @PhotonHerald

    5 жыл бұрын

    Some additional things I forgot. Truthsmiles is right. Make sure you get the OK from your landlord before doing ANY of this. Under the stud wall's bottom plate, use sill plate gasket. Nailing/gluing down the sill plate only goes so far. If you get water in, it can force it's way UNDER the sill and into the office space. www.homedepot.com/p/Owens-Corning-FoamSealR-5-1-2-in-x-50-ft-Multi-Use-Ridged-Sill-Plate-Gasket-2FS/202080947 Recommend pre-building your stud walls and then tilting them up. Place the sill gasket where the sill plates go, then attach the wall to the floor (make sure level and plumb when you go to put the top plate on. Attach fire-barrier drywall on the inner wall. Smear with Green Glue. Prebuild the outer stud wall the same way, but attach the fire barrier drywall before tilting up. Will make the wall MUCH heavier. So bring buddies or build smaller, panelized wall sections. Smear some more green glue on the mating surface, then tilt up and push up against the first wall so you get solid contact. Also, recommend bringing the bathroom into the office space as well. Shop toilet areas can get pretty gross, even if just from leaving it open to a clean, open air shop area.

    I epoxied the garage/shop floor when I moved into my place. A friend who works at a marina recommended Seal-Krete Epoxy-Seal. I also used the primer/sealer. I've been extremely happy with it. Make sure you roll any drips or runs out immediately. It's pretty easy to do. Kudos to being transparent with your income. That's pretty personal. People would be surprised at how much more money they'd have if they didn't drink, smoke, buy coffee every day, eat out (fast food is crazy expensive lately) and all sorts of other little things. I've recently put a few of those luxury habits on hold and started selling things I don't need, want or use. It all adds up quickly.

    Unless the owner is paying for it, DO NOT epoxy the floor. Why would you invest money for permanent improvements to someone else's building? Not to mention, there are probably caveats in your lease. Unless maybe your parents bought it and they're leasing it to you under the guise of rent to own or something like that.

Somewhere he can leave his electronics ,somewhere he can have the keys to all his cars secured. Basically there are people out there who like to steal. And if all he builds is an office, whenever anyone comes to visit for any reason, they will be forced to sit in the office. It doesnt have to be a reception it can be a coffee style staff room or anything.

    Having designed/spec'd many vehicle workshops I have a couple of comments: 1) The floor looks as though it was power floated, which means that it will become a skating rink with any liquids on it. You have a couple of options a) Blastrac the floor to get a grippier surface and then seal it, which is relatively cheap operation or finish it with epoxy/polyester with sand added. Take special note of the bay joints, which must be maintained 2) What is the wall finish? It should be IMO concrete block up to door head height so as to be durable. It does not look as though you can fix anything to the walls so you will need a subframe for all your perimeter fixture. Also, how flammable is the wall finish? You will be doing hot work internally as well as having machines working so this needs to be completely non-combustible. 3) The lighting is generic warehouse type lighting, which is not suitable for vehicle workshops. You need flourescent/led strip lights running lengthways between the bays (not over the top of the vehicles) so as to light the side of the vehicle - these will also minimize the shadows within the engine bays, interiors and boot areas. Add perimeter lighting at door head height on all the walls. 4) Install a decent sized compressor(s) and fit a ring main so as to allow plug in points all around the unit. 5) Fit an external water hose point and power for a high pressure washing facility. 6) Consider fume extract but remember that vehicle fumes are heavy so that the extract points need to be low down and therefore don't make good general ventilation. 7) Add some fans through the roof for ventilation. 8) Add a stainless steel wash trough with ss splash back for general hand (and occasional parts!) washing because your rest room area will become a might ****hole if you have to wash in there. The trough can be sited against the rest room wall to easy the plumbing installation. 9) Install CCTV and decent security because you will be more vulnerable than your neighbours. There are many other considerations but these are the general main ones.

    Wow, so many questions.. First of all, congratulations! (I know I am being nosy here, but) 1. Why are you changing your channel from an at-home type of DIY-er to a shop DIY-er? I think many of us enjoy watching a guy that we can relate to. Breaking and making stuff in his own garage. 2.How are you able to afford all this? I'm not familiair with KZread revenue or your private job, so I am just curious. 3. I see you really enjoy buying new projects and thinking about how you are going to fix them up. However, are you actually enjoying any of the cars? Like taking them on trips and pampering them afterwards with a detail or such. Keep up the excellent content and I wish you the best!

    Pro tip: for your office, go vertical. If you build it about 8 feet overhead you'll be able to park 2 or 3 cars underneath. Theres plenty of space above, and you'll be able to watch everything going on in the shop below. Good for videos.

    For the Bentley you ideally need a scissor lift, for the phaeton/bentley you pretty much drop all the running gear from underneath, in the dealers they use a scissor lift with mounting lugs on it that you attach the running gear to and lift the body off using a 2 post lift. Quite easy to do with the right kit.

    Good for you. That new garage looks very spacious and more appropriate for you to store your cars and work on them. As for the lighting, I suggest you try a solution you can move around the shop and have right where you need it, like the lamps used by filmmakers that are adjustable in height and angle.
