I'm learning how to draft patterns so you don't have to

One of the most common questions I get asked is where I get my patterns from. My most requested videos are how to draft patterns like I do.
Well I am going back to the basics and learning how to draft patterns from the experts, to make sure I'm not doing it all wrong. Then, I am going to take that knowledge and combine it with own my experience and to make tutorials on how to draft patterns.
In this video, I'm starting from scratch and following the professional's instructions to see how they differ from what I do.

Totally agree. When I first started sewing, I had the feeling of being totally inadequate, and nothing fit me. I needed a long long time to try again, and then bait of a shorter time to try it again. The more I sew, the more I try, the easier it gets, the better it fits, and the more I can understand what my sources like that exact patternmaking book even say. I guess taking apart garments and doing copies of hem is a great preparation, but nothing beats constructing a garment / fit block by yourself and realising it just fits.

Literally bought this book a few weeks ago to try and learn how to make patterns. It's pretty straight forward as long as you have your measurements however I also found they need tiny tweaks; those curves are tricky for sure. My problem is that there are no instructions on how to sew all the pattern bits together or what order to sew them in. Do you have any book recommendations that would complement this one?
@CorneliusQuiring
3 жыл бұрын
Oh nice. I am glad to hear you are learning from the book. Unfortunately, I do not have any books that I use to learn how to sew pants, but rather a random assortment of KZread tutorials. I do plan to do 1 video for drafting and then a second one to show how I sew pants.
Great video Mr. Quiring, If you ever get the chance to would it be possible for you to make a 40s inspired trouser? The wide fit, high waisted yet very well fitting and not sloppy looking. I'm sorry it's so specific but I find myself wanting to sew my own vintage clothing because these repro brands are trying to charge an arm and a leg. Thanks, Julio.
@CorneliusQuiring

I have had a few people request a wide legged, more vintage men's trouser so I will definitely keep it in mind for a future. Thanks for watching and thanks for your suggestion.
Ahh this is wonderful! Can you please make a video about lining pants? I like the idea of flat lining the individual pattern pieces super neatly before constructing the entire garment, but wonder how that works with mens pants that are usually only half-lined? Can you please also make a video on adjusting pant blocks to make those nice high-rise 1940s style trousers? :D
@CorneliusQuiring
3 жыл бұрын
That' a good idea! I plan to make another pair of pants out of a linen and plan to fully line them, so I could do it then. I will certainly make a full high-waisted pants tutorial as that's been one of my biggest requests to date. In the mean time, I do briefly describe my process in this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/mqqapqSDhK3cpKQ.html Hope that helps and thanks for chiming in.

Will you talk about drafting the pattern only or sewing it too? I noticed that this book tells you how to draft only so it's kinda difficult for beginners like me and there are also other things that we need to draft next to the pants basic block like the waistband and the zipper fly etc... I've always wanted to discuss this book with others
@CorneliusQuiring
3 жыл бұрын
I plan to do it in two parts. The first one is going to be how to draft the pattern and alter it to fit. I will also discuss the basics of drafting the fly and pockets. Then the second video is going to be sewing a pair of pants with the pattern we made.

Hi!!! I have the same textbook and was just wondering how does one learn assembly for all the items in the book? How did you learn assembly?
@CorneliusQuiring
Жыл бұрын
Yes, assembly is very different from drafting. I learned with a patchwork of random KZread tutorials and good ol' fashion trial and error. I am focused on making tutorial videos these days so perhaps you can learn a thing or 2 from my videos :)
@Cornelius Quiring please do a step by step drafting of bodice and pants patterns 🥺
@CorneliusQuiring

If you want a step by step video on drafting and sewing pants, you can watch the following videos: kzread.info/dash/bejne/Z22W1qije5bYqJM.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/i5OXk9qddLK5d6Q.html The bodice one is coming soon.
Watching the video and your process of iterations »minor tweaks« as you phrase it… How do you go about transferring the tweaks to the pattern? Or do you create a correction to the pattern and always cut new fabric / open the seams. A pointer would be great how this works! Since it is repetitive I am sure editing Corn cut this part out of footing… I am learning to sew and draft my mens wear inspired by your content :)
@CorneliusQuiring
2 жыл бұрын
The reality is that it all depends on the moment. If it's minor tweaks, I'll do them right on the sample garment and then apply them to the pattern after. If it's substantial, I'll return to the pattern, update as needed and then create a new sample. Good luck with your sewing. I hope you're able to create whatever your heart desires :)

@CorneliusQuiring

Most calculator apps on our phones have converters built in.
Aldrich does everything in metric. How are you doing the metric to imperial conversion? I'm particularly interested in the ease measurements. Is it a strait 1:1 conversion? ie: 3cm is 1.181in. Are you just rounding off to the nearest 1/8 inch?

Hi there Cornelius, thanks for this video! Does the inseam line of the pants have to make that slight curve inward starting from the crotch or can it also be straight? i'm making baggy denim shorts and I kinda think a straight line fits better in this case, will it cause any wearability issue?
