The songs in the first movie were written before Zac Efron was cast in the lead and his voice didn't really fit those songs, so he only sang a couple of lines. That's his real voice when he's on Gabriella's balcony, trying to talk her into forgiving him, and on the stage when she gets stage fright and he's trying to convince her to sing. Since they knew that he would be playing the lead in the other two movies, the songs were written for him and he does all of the singing in those two.

I don’t know how it was in Canada, but in the US during the pandemic there were these commercials that kept running on TV with different celebrities and they always ended with the phrase “We’re all in this together”. Every time this song would run through my head, it was my own little pandemic anthem😂

High School Musical was a huge Disney Channel Original Movie back in the day.

Haha the scene after the credits gets me everything, their faces show they had so much fun making the movie

Drew Seeley actually sang all of Troy’s parts in this movie.

4:57 this trilogy paved the way for the dcom musicals of today. This was definitely super successful upon release

Vanessa Hudgens was recently in the musical Tick Tick Boom! Definitely worth the watch

Loved high school musical growing up!! Love the 2nd one too!! And hey JV I absolutely love the little edit you did with Troy sneaking away as if “Batman” and the cut to a super funny gif or meme!! It creaked me up more than I expected

The first 2 HSM movies were straight to TV but because of the popularity, the 3rd one got a theatrical release. I remember my classmates and I skipping class to go to the cinema to watch it 😅

This first movie is one of the cheesiest movies of all time and it's great 😂. I don't think it's actually Zac singing in this first one but he does in the other 2. I don't know if his voice was breaking or he was just struggling or what but yeah..bless him. He CAN sing obviously!

Kenny Ortega was the director and choreographer. He also directed hocus pocus and was Michael Jackson’s choreographer at one point

I believe he did sing for this one, but his tone wasn't quite right because of his age at the time, so it was mixed with someone else's but I've forgotten who the other guy was

Someone else did the singing for the Troy character in this movie and Zack got singing lessons and improved his voice between the first and second movie. He did his own singing in the second and third movies. Also, the first and second movies were debuted on the Disney Channel but the third one had a theatrical release.

I've got such insane love for these movies. I had a mad crush on Corbin Bleu when I first saw this movie (he was actually the main reason I watched it) and that was it. Even all these years later I'm still aboard the HSM train. I know all the songs by heart and just.. these movies are special. I really hope you'll watch the other two movies as well, they'll only get better! HSM 2 is my personal favorite, with 3 VERY close behind. Also please give Ryan a chance, he really gets to shine in the sequels.

I always loved Sharpay she is definitely born to be a star and she is very hard working to make her dream come true (same about her brother)

As someone who was born in 2000, I grew up with this series-mostly the 2nd and 3rd one because I was very little when this first movie came out😂

You should 1000% watch Hairspray! It also has Zac Efron, Brittany Snow (who was in Pitch Perfect), James Marsden (X-Men), Michelle Pfeiffer, John Travolta, Christopher Walken, Queen Latifah..loads of people! It's possibly my favourite musical. It's set in the 60s and also deals with race segregation.

Thanks for this blast from the past!!! I got chills of nostalgia from watching it, to singing along, to learning the choreography!!! I had done some sports growing up but found my passion for theatre in high school, and I’m proud of it. I’d really like to see your reaction to the rest of the trilogy. I missed the hype for this series, as I didn't have cable, so everyone else in my middle school would reference it (especially my fellow theatre kids) and I never got it :P I was also kinda stuck in the childish mentality of "this thing is cool/popular therefore not liking it means I'm smarter" or whatever my parents instilled in me. Anyway, once when out selling Girl Scout cookies with my neighbor, she freaked out and pointed going "OMG!!! THAT'S VANESSA HUDGENS!!! EATING AN APPLE!!!" And I was like "who?" but my friend ran up to the movie set school bus (they were on break) and we almost sold her a box of Carmel Delites before the director or someone told her no :P Now I wish I'd known who she was at the time, but it's still a fun memory XD

Zac only did the first lines in "Start of something new" & "Breaking free" & the balcony scene, the rest was done by Drew Seeley who was in "Another Cinderella story" and IMO he's 1,000 times hotter than Zac Efron I still remember the dance routine for "We're all in this together" I think Corbin Bleu is the best dancer in the cast

The success this movie made was INSANE!! I remember they released all kinds of merch everywhere and then they even went on tour and sold out arenas 😅 this one was kinda part of my childhood, I lived and breathed these songs but I have to tell you the 2nd one is definitely where it's at!! Story and songs wise, the 1st one is nostalgic though!!

It's always fun to revisit this movie. I went to a performing arts high school so we actually would sometimes break into song and dance. Didn't have any sports teams, and also we pretty much all liked each other, there was very little student-to-student drama, so that doesn't match up. But we'd totally break into musical shit.

Camp Rocks are fun. Greatest Showman is top.

You should watch 17 Again with Zac Efron and Leslie Mann!! Really shows how good of an actor Zac Efron is and it’s hilarious! Please!

High school musical was THAT Disney Channel movie when I was a kid, had the CD and everything. Now I'm like its soo bad, its kinda good (that's mostly the nostalgia talking lol). Also if you haven't seen it yet, consider checking out The Greatest Showman, I liked Zac in it and it is a much better musical than HSM (as it should be).

If you wanna see where Zac Efrons musical career took him please please react to the movie The Greatest Showman but also Hairspray! I don’t watch for Zac tho there’s so much talent in both movies!!!

The idea for the film came in 1999, which was originally titled "Grease 3" and was supposed to star Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake as the children of Danny and Sandy from the original film. The plot was virtually the same as HSM but with more similarities to Grease. Sharpay was supposed to be Rizzo's daughter (producers tried to get Christina Aguilera for the part but she declined). Justin Timberlake's band mates from *NSYNC were supposed to have supporting roles, and John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John to possibly have cameos. The project eventually became High School Musical. Zac Efron didn't sing in the first movie, at least not for the most part. Before he was cast, the role of Troy was written for a tenor, and he who himself is a baritone could not properly sing most of the parts. Singer-songwriter and actor Drew Seeley, who also auditioned for the role, provided majority of the character's singing voice, with Zac singing the first and last few lines in Start of Something New, the beginning of Breaking Free and during the scene on the balcony. However, Zac did all of his own singing in the sequels, as all the music in those films had been tailored specifically for his voice. Zac and Vanessa Hudgens were partnered up during the auditioning process due to their chemistry. No surprise since they dated for 4 years, from 2006-2010. Lucas Grabeel originally auditioned to play Troy while Ashley Tisdale originally auditioned to play Gabriella. At the second callback, Lucas and Ashley auditioned together and it was rumored that they did not get along. Naya Rivera, who went on to play Santana Lopez on Glee, also auditioned for the role of Gabriella. Lucas Grabeel asked director Kenny Ortega about Ryan's sexuality very early on and they agreed Ryan should be gay. However, Disney wouldn't allow them to use that in a "family film" so the matter is never addressed (until the TV series). Kenny Ortega, who directed this film, was supposed to direct and choreograph Michael Jackson's This Is It concert tour, before MJ died in 2009. Kenny ended up directing the concert film which was put together from rehearsal footage. He also served as the director of his memorial. Through Kenny, Michael actually called Zac Efron to tell him he enjoyed his work in HSM. Zac broke out in tears during the call. Fun random fact: Bart Johnson who plays Coach Bolton (aka "daddy" Bolton) is married to actress Robyn Lively, who is Blake Lively's sister.

I'm pretty sure High School Musical was the inspiration for making Descendants and Z-O-M-B-I-E-S, it was *iconic* ✨ I even got a High School Musical phone sock as a present, that's how I found it 😁 good times! "What the heck are those two doing in a tree!?" should have been more of a known meme tbh 😂

For the first HSM they blended Zac Efron's voice with another singer Drew Seeley. So most of the voice is Drew Seeley's. But for HSM2 and HSM3 it's all Zac Efron singing

I loved these movies! I watched them from elementary all the way into high school. This was my favourite movie trilogy as a kid growing up. I'd love to see you check out High School Musical: The Musical: The Series by the way. If you watch the movie closely, they drop little Easter eggs to this in the show. And I would love to see you react to both sequels. HSM 2 and HSM 3 are some of the best sequels in a trilogy. At least that's what I think.
