I'm Gonna Need An Axe!
If this ice gets any thicker, I'm gonna need an axe! This time of year, dealing with ice and water can be a challenge. It's another day on the farm, and I've got all kinds of things to do. There's the usual taking care of the animals along with picking up Sammy the steer's meat from the butcher. I also show some "tractor detective work" I've been doing with the Farmall MD thermostat and cylinder head valve recession, and talk about our solar panels' performance in the winter.

-We do not offer farm tours

Nice diagram ... almost looks like an architect drew it ! 😉
If the whole world had your disposition, my , my how it would be!!..ty for posting!
Spot on with the comment about Yesterdays Tractors. That's where I go when I need technical information that I can't find anywhere else.
Hmmm Pete says, ”I’m not one to sit around and watch TV” as he’s making a KZread video for all of us to sit around the TV and watch! Kind of ironic! Just picking on ya a bit. I’m glad you are industrious make your channel much more interesting.
It is relaxing watching those t bones eat , they are friendly, like big dogs... cool....
Information on Dexters, MD engines, solar, AND Dad jokes to boot! Thanks for another great video!

@Emmanuel Maxim lately I have been using Flixzone. Just google for it :)
I no longer have a TV. It's been 25 years and I don't miss it.
I would love to see a video tour of the butcher’s place
Yesterday's tractor has some great knowledgeable people that will be very helpful ,I had hyd problems with my to 30 Ferguson, got reply from a retired field engineer for Ferguson he sent me info gave to my mechanic fix me up
The recess is there because it's a non interference engine. Also those can be lapped periodically to clean them up and seat them better, plus they can be done with lap compound and with the valves in the seat. The tolerances are actually pretty liberal with the older naturally aspirated engines...both gas and diesel.
Reliving my farm youth with you, really enjoy your homey presentation with common sense mechanics.
Love the interaction with the calf.
We drilled tiny holes in the thermostats on a Detroit the old ones had them and the new ones didn’t and it kept air locking until we drilled one little hole in each of them still running today
13:52 I like it when snow just sloughs off. I enjoyed the video.
Love the mixed video little tractor, little farming.
Ok that calf is so cute. I was talking to my herdsman yesterday and for the first time I stumped him when I ask if he knew about Dexters.
I agree gray cold weather gets to me too!
Super great video Pete A, lots of useful information and awesome drawing on that seat and valve. So cute Doc gave cow kisses. Any chance you might throw a heater in the cow's trough, instead of breaking up the ice every morning..? 🐃🐤👍💚🚜☉☉☉
Enjoyed watching your video! I hope you have a wonderful week! 🇺🇸🚜👍
Can’t miss a video you make Pete. Ironic that you make videos because you can’t sit around and watch TV. And I sit around when things need to get done to watch your videos🤔 I love them. They are so informative and interesting.
Thanks for sharing. Makes my day to see a new video from you guys. Looking forward to spring!
Most enjoyed Pete. I can feel your frustration I know I sat on a engine waiting 4 weeks once I know exactly how you feel. It was only after I sounded a little bitter that it was finally completed. I'm looking for a tractor such as yours to restore. I know John Deere is Superior but I'm sure I'm going to be happy with a MD. Let face one thing together when you were younger the hood was red as mine was green, those memories are in us and make us feel so good. Your videos have got me through the dark days of winter thankyou for sharing your knowledge your expertise. Have a good day.

Machinery Pete calls it the rule of twelve, what ever tractor the family had when you were 12 years old, is the one you will always remember with the fondest memories. Be it red, green, orange, blue, yellow, or what have you, it's the 1 you first drove.
Pete, thanks for that great video ending. Today was a rough day and that adjusted my gyros!
Totally agree on the goodness of oysters.
Thank you for sharing.
Congrat for your new engine stand. Keep the good work. Be patient.

What is Doc's story? I've been enjoying your videos since I stumbled onto them a few months ago. I expect to get your book delivered tomorrow. I was born near the family farm in Lake Odessa, MI. My Dad looking for work in the late '60's took his family, incl myself when I was 3 to Seattle. WA, where we've stayed for the past 62 years. Still a farmer just doing the growing differently in urban America with gardens and smaller herds of hamsters you put in cages and feed dandelions, clover, and daisy flowers. 🐹🌼🏡👩🌾

Hi Janice, Doc's up in the large barn because his Mom is up there. That's where we keep our cull heifers & cows that are going to the butcher this summer, so the bulls don't breed them. I think he would enjoy some other calves to play with but he was too young to wean when we separated the herd. He'll be back in with everybody in April when the herd goes out to pasture.
Another absolutely fine video. Love it! As for the parts that done seem to be just right and have short comings. I frequently modify what is available to work properly for my situations. I wouldn't hesitate to add 3- 1/8" holes to the thermostat so there is some flow and that button gets hood thermal flow.
Could you do a Q&A while walking around your property? Get out and about while you are waiting for parts and answer some common questions?
Great info on the MD valves setup
Great stuff Pete👍👍👍👍
careful pete, are you getting attached to doc? it's neat to see how he is finally warming up to you. loved the cow kisses.
It's like cooking a big meal for your family at the end the chef is never hungry
Great video! Covered many aspects of the farm
Pete it's always nice to wake up to see one of your videos. I got a feeling that calf will take the place of Sammy in your day to day operation.
Hint...go to machine shop..sit down...start telling your jokes...take finished motor home in one hour.

Hi Pete - I have used that themast by drilling holes in them. It works great
Good stuff my friend. Always enjoy learning . The solar panels I seem to learn some about that I didn't know. I like the painting I learned a great deal on that as well!!!!!!
thanks pete
Another great video Pete, thank you.
Another great video, keep them coming. Can't wait till 🐄 have babies. Love to see them.
Lovely film 👍
Thanks Pete. Easy on the machinist. I've been on the other end
I bet you could drill some bypass holes in that thermostat like the old one.

Excellent video Pete! Thanks for the video on the thermostat! I might need to check our H, I think we changed the thermostat not too long ago...
another good one.. hope you had a great day also.
The NY winter has just been brutal this year! I’ve been going to the bottom of my big pasture to pull out logs (the house and barn area are on top of a hill) it’s been a real challenge getting the tractor up the hill towing a log or two behind it!
Love that calf!!
Wow, I was not aware of the improperly manufactured “M” thermostat. I assume if you find a supplier of a proper stat you’ll let us know. 👍
Samy looks good on and off the field!
Physical activity is a more effective antidepressant than any drug. I'm in the northwest, so rain and wind and clouds are the norm this time of year for me. Just built a small greenhouse in the rain. For me that's a lovely day too. "Daylight" light bulbs help for when I can't get out and do something, they also help for starting seedlings indoors.
The thing about farming oysters, you'll end up having more kids!🤣 Stick with beef!
Another great vlog Pete
Thank you!
Great video!
Nothing better than good ole oysters.... I lived in Maryland for 55 years... Chesapeake bay oysters were great. No oysters in Michigan..... Fresh oysters that is.
My son went to Ithaca college I would have love to try one of your steaks if I knew you were a farmer and sold your products at the market.
Excellent video Pete :) never done with pigs on farming but heard it a challenge too and wild at times!
I think at times when you are waiting for repair work to be done it seems like at times things are put on the back burner because another job is more important than yours,or as you said this shop hasn't worked on an MD in years. It's hard to be patient in these situations because we have our own schedules to go by. I hope that the machine shop will finish up soon. Great video looking forward future updates.🙂
Great video Pete!! A little bit of everything. You got me thinking about the thermostat in my Farmall H!? I had the head rebuilt a couple years back, and put in a new thermostat....Gonna have to check that out!! In regards to the machine shop, I have had the same issues. In my opinion, they know the tractor is older, and for most people restoring these machines is hobby based, and not a necessity for livelihood,. So, when more prioritized work comes in the door, they put this type of work on the back burner, and when things slow down again, they resume work on it. Not right in my opinion, but that seems to be the case more often than not. Have a great Sunday Pete!!
Pete if you cant find the proper thermostat drill some holes in the one you have. I always drill a hole or two anyways to help burp the cooling system when you fill it.
I sure do Love this channel. :-)
My friend puts about a cup of salt in a gallon milk jug and fills it with water then puts the lid on tight. Then she submerges it in her stock tank and the water does not freeze up.
Pete I love your vids and this one was awesome and I am now convinced o have dexters for my breed and they seem about the right size there really friendly and look like they dress really good so you convinced me to try them out!
You have a good variety of topics
What a cute buddy "Doc" is!!! ;o)
Sammy fits in the backseat now 😏
I think you might be the only other person who understands the concept of the Dexter size being a selling point. I've tried and tried to explain the concept to so many, who insist I'm doing it wrong. We have our "Tavern Beef" too, from dairy culls, big huge ribeye's that won't fit on a dinner plate, and that's a market as well. It's delicious and savory stuff, but so many people don't want to freeze 300-400 pounds of meat!
Great video again Pete. Love the red tractors. My tractor is red but it’s not an International.
Oh boy!!!! Look at those nice deep red stakes. Sammy's lookin' good! :v)
Just found you guys and I gotta say. I love the dad jokes! Lol
Why not drill hole in the new thermostat same size as in old one.
I was looking up tractor models like your tractors on amazon, then I went to work and found out it was AG day and they sell tractor models lol.
Any way of drilling a small hole through that thermostat to allow water to trickle through to activate the sensor?
We had a radiator shutter on our MD which we could control the temp of the engine but ours was an older model.
@JustaFewAcresFarm
3 жыл бұрын
I think this one had shutters too originally. A thermostat is still needed regardless of shutters.
Awesome video 👌😊👌
thanks
Pete, hope things work out for you and the machine shop,I been there,I realize what’s your saying. It’s not like your not spending there? Oh well, my recent injector pump was returned, before it ever started the tractor, they took care of the problem, however they made me feel guilty, and insinuated I broke it! We all know what they say and what they do reminds me of politics sometimes. Wish you get it back soon. Later. Almost forgot, very good eyeballin on that thermostat. Perhaps you can put your holes there? Sure you’ve thought of that .
Pete, you need to get into honey bees. Start out with a couple three hives to see if you might like it. One thing for sure, your customers will love you even more if you offered honey in Ithaca and at your farm store!

Love it!
As a city boy, I find naming your slaughter animals a little creepy. I think I would just give them a number. I like your videos.
The cow kisses at the end kinda made you forget your frustrations, huh? I remember coming home from work stressed and anxious and the first thing I’d do was grab one of my babies and just hold them for a while. Melts on the problems.
Dexter cattle hmmm... trick drill a small hole to allow coolant to flow even when its closed...
I love your videos. They are interesting and calming. They are also funny. I also love the jokes. Keep up the grate work!
