I started skating last November and I've been practicing in my living room, and 1-2 times a week at a local rink since then. I've really fallen in love with skating and I'm learning a lot from your videos! I can kinda do the crazy legs because of you 😄! Thank you!! To anyone else on their new journey - falling is normal. I've been falling a lot. Get back up, dust yourself off, and ignore the laughter from any mentally inflexible people you encounter.

This is ME also… Just got into skating about a month ago… I’ve been going to the rink dang near everyday to learn… Taking lessons also… Practicing at home… Falling a lot at all the places… Some say they see my improvement but I don’t see it… It’s the craziest thing… Continued success in your skating journey… I do plan to be around next year.. Still skating but even better…

Okay, I have to respond. First, I love your teaching style and it helps me. I practice. I disagree with you on the skates, for the most part because, a decent pair of skates that fit YOUR foot matters. No, I won't be able to skate with your skill, but having good skates matters. Good and decent is relative but something that is comfortable and basically safe. I'm 64 and started skating the last week of June 2022. I had not roller skated since about 1973. I skated on an inexpensive pair of skates for the first 6 weeks or so and when I bought my Chaya's I immediately felt safer and skated better. But, I don't need a $600 pair of skates. I completely agree with you that we have to put in the time, hours and commitment if we want to gain skill and skate well. Since I can skate in my house, I skate almost daily. I work at it but I love it working at it and challenging myself. There is just something about skating that changes me. For the better. I also disagree with you that us older people (I don't feel old, btw) won't be doing this in a year. I will not stop. Maybe other people will quit. I won't. I grasp what you are saying about people quiting but, that will go for a lot of people of all ages, not just those of us over X age. I am an okay skater right now but I learn new moves and improve on moves and skills every week. I am in a $160 pair of skates. Good enough for my skill level at this point. I love my Chaya's.

We have some things in common. How much were your Chaya's?

As someone who started with 25€ second hand skates from eBay, I always recommend beginners to start on a low level skate, get some new bearings (if you bought used skates cause the old ones are usually super rusty) and then practice practice practice. Once you've figured out that you're gonna stick with skating and have some basic moves down, invest in a good pair. I used my cheap "blister skates" for almost 2 years before buying some Riedells. I had already figured out how to do toe spins, struts, the grapevine and more. The ankle stability of my new skates instantly helped me to level up. Now, skating's more fun than ever :)

Agreed with what others have previously said. Age has absolutely nothing to do with who sticks it out and who puts in the work. Loving skating - or any undertaking - enough to put in the work is highly personal and cuts across all age, race, gender, and cultural lines. Full stop. I speak from experience. I was one of those "rink rats" of the '70's and '80's who adored the sport. I ended up hanging up my skates for 38 years. I thought I'd *never* be able to skate again. I was fortunate enough to have a second chance. I grabbed that opportunity, and I am forever thrilled that I did. I currently work weekends and special events as a floor guard and DJ at one of the few remaining rinks in the Bay Area (The Golden Skate). My skills and confidence are better than ever. Like Diamond, I upgraded as my skills improved and knowledge base on equipment grew. My beloved skates are taffy Riedell/Moxi Lolly suede boots, Arius titanium plates with the softest bushings available, PowerDyne toe stops (since I'm not ready to let go of my derby reliance on them), 97A Wicked Scotts/Bones Swiss Ceramics, and cool LED underlights a skate friend made for me. They give me comfort, speed, amazing edge control, a little danceability, and a lot of fun. I give Diamond the benefit of the doubt here on his "old folks will quit" comment. I think what he meant was that most new and "renewed" skaters - first timers and those coming back after a long hiatus - lace up the rentals, get on the rink, and quickly find that a few TikTok videos or recalling old memories of teen rink rat days don't keep them up and skating. A few falls later and they're unlaced and returning the skates. I see it all the time. The reality is that mastery takes hard work, falls, pain, frustration, patience, perseverence, and then more hard work. Enduring that sh*t, in turn, requires a plain-and-simple love of skating. That's my takeaway here, at least. 🙂

Truth. We have resources for learning that we're not around 5 years ago. To skate well, enjoy your practice like a meditation (and support the other skaters that are on the path )

Love them Boots, also I appreciate you telling everyone how much hard work it takes. BTW im one of the people that started skating in the 70s and got back on it about three years ago and i love it💯

I started skating really young...wentbontobspeed skating with a team...it was so fun! I'm 52 now, and decided I'm go in to do it again. The thing that I've noticed, my friends wanted yo do it as well...I to,anthem to practice. Your balance changes as you age!!! Especially true for women. As far as the kind of skate I use, I'm more comfortable in speed skates. Am I good, yeah, if I stay on the carpet!!! Practice, a little a day is progress, and some is better than none. When I was on speed team I had expensive skates, expensive wheels, extra bearings, plates, all of it....I've got one pair of skates and 3 sets of wheels, one for outside, one for wood floor rinks, one for cement floor rinks. God bless everyone! I hope y all have fun!

I bought some mid grade skates and put the best wheels tires and bearings on them. The amount of control difference from the wheels is unreal

I wholly believe in the hard work it takes to be a good skater. I started learning how to skate for roller derby a year ago in my Suregrip GT50 skates. My right one pulled hard to the outside, but I still wore them for a year and wasn't able to skate on one foot with my very well with those skates, but I still took that time to learn. This year I was able to get new skates and they are amazing! Now I actually can skate on my right foot solo and I can't wait until they are fully broken in so that I can learn even more skating tricks with them!

But what is the grind?! How to know what to learn and when? I want a structured way to learn skating.

Love this!! I used skating as physical therapy, and it's the only reason I'm in the shape I'm in!! Walker is on point, it's all about the skater and not the equipment!!

great video! I love your message about it not being alll about the equipment. When i was a freestyle skier back in the 90’s -early 2000’s there was some street art in our lil training room that said “you can’t buy style” i have lived by this since the . I am a professional photog and when i was starting out i didn’t have the best equipment (still don’t..) but i learned to get amazing with on the equipment i had. And ppl would always ask me “what camera do u have” sorry to disappoint but my camera is just a tool. You could own this and have no idea what to do. Same with skating! I love skating and have my whole life but only bought my first pair 4 years ago. I don’t have the fanciest plates or bearings or cushons but i am workign with what i have. Once i feel like i am growing and realllly getting out of my comfort zone i will upgrade stuff but it takes time . I started out on chicagos, then chayas, now im skating on moxi panthers. But damn that boot you designed may have to be the next boot it’s perfection :)

Hey Diamond, That’s great that you are doing a boot! Good luck, work hard, bring them TO market, ‘cause the market won’t come to you. I appreciate you keeping it real. Ya, some will come and go, that’s how everything works! But many will carry it thru their whole life! I found my dads old skates in the basement when I was 12. Dusted them off and beat those old wooden wheels until nothin’ was left. I’ve been skating for 48yrs now. I love it more today then when I began and now my daughter skates better than me! Btw, I just build new skates. $2700, totally worth it. This pair will likely last the rest of my life! Roll on!

I skate to do my laundry and chores at home. Stay in your budget is a must. I have skates for different things. I skate outdoors a lot in the spring and summer and winter it’s a covered outdoor rink and the indoor. My daughter is a teenager and she skates. That girl gets better and better each time I see her skate (daily). She love it so much she now has about 6 pairs of skates. Her first pair I bought her were a $40 pair of Chicagos and the next were a pair of cheap roller derby brand. She now skates in Moxi skates.

I got back into it recently. Absolutely love it and retsined a surprising amount of skill. I was a marshall on roces hockey skates. Moved to riedell r3s. Not sure i prefer the lower ankle support but changing wheels has made the biggest difference. Swapped out for sonar auras which were good but too soft. Now on rollerbones team logo 98a and bog jump in performance. Thinking going harder again but this is rink only. I was all about the speed back in the day (late 80s UK) but watching some skilled skaters pulling jam moves has really interested me. Its cool learning new moves and having the background in skating really helps. I think skates do actually make a difference to a point but not sure how much changing to skates better suited to dance skating would help. Having said all that your own design look awesome and ive noted your plates and wheels too. Great channel. Im gonna work on your tutorial for toe spins next! Cheers.

Awesome video, thank you!! You mention needing the hard work and practice regardless of the quality of skate, I totally agree! I saw in some of your other videos you had a boot without a heel. I'm used to skating (for about 15 years now) without a heel, and have been seeing a LOT of skaters in a heeled boot. I'm trying to just get some basic jam moves down, and am considering switching to a heeled boot. Would you recommend switching to a boot with a heel, or do you think the more important thing would be to keep working at it and regardless of what type of boot (heeled or heel-less), the hard work is what matters? Thanks!

I cannot skate on rentals because we all skate differently….. some skate on the outside some on the inside and the wheels are grooved that way so I went and bought my own…SO MUCH BETTER!❤

Hey man, I know that this video is kinda old; so me leaving a comment on it now. Its just unlikely to get noticed. But i've been skating since January of 2021, I got my first pair of skates (Academy Inlines) in June of 2021. i skated in those for a year until I got my Tour volt kv3's last january. At the start of this month, i started learning how to jam skate in my friends old pair and I just bought a pair of vnla's. im def gonna be watching more of your videos to learn tons more.

I'm a 45 year old athletic guy and a decent skater. I started on thrift store GT50s. They were like new, maybe $10. The boots weren't very good. The plates flexed, the wheels wide. Then I found some barely used 130 boots on Super Xs for $125 with unknown aluminum-hub, 30mm x 60mm wheels. I skated them for about 6 months, but those boots were whole sizing only. They were a half size too big and the plates were one size too long. Now I'm skating the proper size 220s on shorter Snyder Super Deluxes that I got with FAFNIR bearings, Rannali wheels and the big old gray Snyder toe stops; all barely used, in an old school set-up built by the Woodland Roller Rink, which burned down in '07, for $300. It costs over $700 today just for the boots and plates, unmounted. I stripped the foam and barge cemented 1/2" sheerling into the tongues to cut lace bite, $10. Dance plugs, $7. Swapped over my old wheels and I've been skating them for a about a year, two to three sessions per week. In contrast, the old ladies in the artistic club are slowly gliding around in Edeas on Roll-Line Dance plates. They'll run different duro wheels front to back or on the inside push toe with ceramic Swiss bearings. They want the smoothest roll and most controllable movement in their set-ups. When you know, you know. They know. I say buy the best you can afford, if you're going to keep skating. Build a set-up that fits the type of skating you want to do. Better skates don't make you a better skater, but they do work better when you're working edges or working on your heels and toes.

you are correct, there are no shortcuts. I sometimes wish I had the time to practice. I can skate anywhere but I am not a show model. I started in the days where skates fell apart after 4-6 months.. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣I started 30 years ago skated for about 4 years gave it up, plus it died. Here I am 30 years later and still enjoying it.

Hey I got a question and a statement. I live in Detroit, I just started back skating after a 30 hiatus. You mention that if you can't skate on rental skates, buying skates will not make you better. I refuse to wear rental skates because as you may know you can have one leg going left and the other going right. You may not break my heart, but something down there is going to stretch and break or something. Well that's just me. I'm looking at some Chicago's that cost around $60, but the reviews says that Chicago are not good skates. Do you have any preferences?

It is you. Because I can get down on some rentals on through to my $400 VNLAs. If you can’t skate you can’t skate. Y’all need to practice. If you have carpet find you some tutorial to build your own skate floor. If you have tile or hardwood. And do remember we all including Diamond have to pay the Floor Tax at some point.

That was a bit rude. I've seen so many encouraging words for older skaters. We get it, if you are just starting out or refreshing your skills don't break the bank. Try it, put in the work and then invest. None of us can take our skates or money with us younger or older. That's what eBay and the thrift store are for. 😂
