I'm Glad Frieren is Overrated

Фильм және анимация

It's ridiculous for Frieren to be ranked as the #1 anime of all time, but at least it signifies that people aren't binging slice-of-life anime anymore.

To frame episode 2 as "just runs around and then makes a flower bed somewhere" is simply ridiculous and means you weren't actually watching. Yes, criticize, but if you're going to do it, actually turn your brain on first.

@@baka-raptor Then in that case you missed the significance built around the flowers, thoughtfully reinforced in each use of them. And in no episode do I remember it ever being "just runs around and then makes a flower bed somewhere," nor is there a flower scene "5 to 6 times in every episode" -- maybe that many times in the entire season. Did you actually watch the show, or just regurgitate someone else's bad review?

Some criticisms are fair, but some are pretty dumb. Like criticizing the Himmel flashbacks for being overdone which is genuinely stupid. It’s a huge part of the show because it’s for Frieren to discover what she learned in the past as she’s literally backtracking their journey, and to unveil that adventure, to us, as the viewers who never saw it. This is why Himmel is ranked as the best character during a popularity poll, because we get to go back and see all the things he’s done to influence Frieren to learn about herself and humans. To simply say that it’s bad because it’s overdone, is like saying, for example an anime you brought up, The Dangers in my Heart (Great anime btw) is bad because they constantly goes to the Library and could’ve change the location up more. Which is obviously stupid, because they first interacted with each other in the Library and spoilers for s2, that’s where they ended off at the end of s2 when they confessed. The Library, a part that seems not so important, is a huge part of their characters and their development, just like what the Himmel flashbacks are to Frieren.

Flashbacks shouldn't have to be inherently suspect, but Big 3-era shounen filler ruined that. Regardless, my favorite character so far is Flamme, and she's naturally a flashback-only character. I'm also happy with the way Final Fantasy X did the parallel current & past journeys. My problem with the Himmel flashbacks in Frieren is that there's a repeated formula to them. That's why the Frieren Costco memes are funny, they poked fun at the formula we've gotten to know so well.

  • @RandomLetterE

@@baka-raptor I personally think Frieren does flashbacks very well. Himmel flashbacks may have a repeated formula as it’s literally showing the hero’s journey so that’s really all they can show, whether it’s them helping the villagers, off on some side quest, or actually fighting the villains. However, I don’t think having a repeated formula in this case is bad, not only do we explore more into Frieren’s character, we also get more background info, plus I think they purposely don’t show too much each flashback because Frieren’s current journey is to slowly learn about herself and humans. An example of bad repeated formula for backstory would be something like Naruto (original) which has around 500 flashbacks in canon episodes. You can obviously still dislike Frieren’s formula, that’s your own opinion, but I don’t think it’s fair to mark that off as a bad thing for the series as a whole when the formula clearly works and many people seems to enjoy them. (Also mb, always be ranting for pretty long lol, though I like to just sit here and type my thoughts out, I just don’t agree with some of your criticisms but feel free to think what you want. And even though Frieren is my favorite of last season and one of my favorites of all time, I do respect your opinions on BokuYaba cause damn season 2 was amazing).

To preface my comment, Frieren isn't my top anime. HxH 2011 has that spot for me but, it is in my top 10. I believe the reasons it is the top anime on MAL right now is a result of how mainstream anime has become and how broad of an audience it can encompass with its genres. It may have less reviews but it has many different reasons for being highly rated. Therefore more people who are looking for different things will rate it highly. Also Frieren is close to being a pioneer of a high quality Slice of life anime. Almost everyone can watch Frieren and enjoy it. To compare it to other top anime, FMA Brotherhood is action-oriented and has and older art style. The older art-style will turn away a lot of younger/newer anime watchers and the action orientation will turn away anyone who doesn't want that. Frieren's score will probably go down a bit over time but I think it will remain #1 on MAL until it's dethroned Now to reason against your criticisms. If that's all you have to say about episode 2 I can't help but think you weren't paying attention or you at least don't currently enjoy slice of life that much. Episode 2 was full of character and background building focused on Fern which is something that is necessary for character driven stories/anime. Most anime don't do a good job of it compared to manga because you're forced to go at the anime's pace unlike when you're reading manga but, Frieren does do a good job of it. Personally I really enjoyed episode 2 and the anime would be worse without it. Episodes like episode 2 are a huge contributor to the score of an anime in this genre and Frieren does it the best in recent memory. One line you said didn't make sense to me "nothing happens and it's kind of boring so how can it be bad". There are anime like this, and they are bad. That's a good definition of a bad anime in any genre. There's always something happening in Frieren, they even time skip the uneventful parts of episode 2. What could have been 10 minutes of still frames and bland narration was 90 seconds of time skip and age progression for Fern. My impression when you said "nothing happens and it's kind of boring so how can it be bad" is as follows; this guy doesn't enjoy this genre but doesn't want the backlash of saying he doesn't like Frieren. Not only did you only reference 1 episode that you thought was bad, you didn't reference any episodes that were good. How is that a fair review? You had more criticisms then compliments for the show and yet you still rated it "double plus good". In conclusion the biggest reason Frieren is so popular imo is because it's not just a slice of life feel good anime. It brings in fantasy aspects which make the slice of life a lot more interesting, and it has better or on par action scenes than a vast majority of action focused anime (mind you the industry is saturated with action, it obviously loses out to the top action anime). It can hit you in the feels when it wants to but also has the Aura scene. As a side note I have a question as someone who is watching you for the first time. Wtf is "double plus good"? Through the context of the video I can assume it's a good show and that triple plus good is a top tier show but that kind of rating is really vague and hard to understand. It distracted me from the video and confused me.

To make a long story short, I prefer tiering to ranking. For example, I'd put Hunter x Hunter 2011 in my top tier (+++), but I have no idea where I'd rank it specifically. Definitely top 20, probably top 10, maybe top 5? It's hard to meaningfully compare 100+ episode shounen anime to a 13 episode comedy anime, so I don't bother with the specific rankings, I just stick to tiers. +++ is the highest, ~~~ is the lowest, and ++ is the second highest, usually meaning "great" or 8.5-9.4 out of 10. (I've been using this system I've been using for about 18 years.) You're the second person to bring up episode 2. I really wasn't referring to that one specifically, but in any case, the show felt perfectly average to me 2 episodes in, as do most anime, even the great ones. The arc from episodes 7-10 was when I first thought Frieren had top tier potential. If I went back now and rewatched episode 2, I'm certain I'd enjoy it more, but putting myself in the shoes of someone who's watching the second episode of an anime I knew nothing else about, nothing about the episode would make me think it's a top tier anime. "Nothing happens and it's kind of boring so how can it be bad" certainly isn't my opinion, it's the opinion I'd often hear from other anime bloggers around 2007-2012. It all started with Lucky Star. (Geez we're going down a rabbit hole here, and I could rant for days. I should really do a video about this sometime.) Basically, many of them refused to criticize Lucky Star or even accept criticism of Lucky Star as valid. They started doing mental gymnastics to justify liking it, and "nothing happens and it's kind of boring so how can it be bad" became one of their go-to arguments, along with such classics as "it was what it is" and "when I get home from a long day of work, I just want to sit back, crack open a beer, and watch something that doesn't make my brain work too hard." You're absolutely right, every genre has its good and its bad anime. That's what I'd try to tell these people, and they'd insist that, no, that doesn't apply to "slice-of-life" (a term that was retroactively applied to Lucky Star specifically to deflect criticism) and other slower genres for their newly enlightened selves. Once again, I'm going down a rabbit hole here. In any case, I actually think we agree about almost everything except episode 2. You're just not used to my reviewing style. I tend to criticize shows I like because simply gushing over them adds little to the discussion. Same with bad shows, I like bringing up their positives even if I think they're overall terrible.

frieren juggles two ongoing plotlines per episode. While this might give some viewers a sense of slow pacing, it feels deliberate rather than sluggish. If something doesn't grab your attention immediately, that's okay. The recurring flashbacks and flower imagery are intentional, reinforcing the emotional core established in the first episode and carrying it throughout the series. Personally, I wouldn't call it boring. In fact, I found the everyday moments quite enjoyable. It's disingenuous to say the animation is "beautiful at times." It's consistently stunning throughout. To truly appreciate it, compare still frames, perspective shots, and the level of detail to other anime.

That's why I freely admitted I'm a bad judge of animation quality. I got into anime watching grainy 50 MB fansubbed realmedia files. Pretty much everything since the switch from 4:3 to 16:9 around 2009 looks perfectly good to me. Some of the action sequences in Frieren stood out as great to me, but aside from the action I honestly can't tell what's good and what's great.

Here, if it makes you feel better, I'll criticize the other top 5 MAL anime: FMA: Brotherhood: The tone through the early episodes fit much better in the original FMA anime. Also, the final fight and some other fights toward the end were a letdown. Steins;Gate: Painfully slow from halfway through episode 1 through near the end of episode 10. MUCH slower and more boring than the slowest and most boring parts of Frieren. Gintama: Too many shitty jokes. Once again, MUCH worse than the worst jokes from Frieren. Attack on Titan Season 3 Part 2: To keep things spoiler-free, let's just say certain characters' motivations don't add up.
