I believe the shinobi were meant to capture her alive and take her hostage as a sort of third party. That way Ishido can claim he had nothing to do with it. By being captured the shinobi would use this a way to humiliate Mariko and reinforce why the hostages needed to stay put under Ishido. She understood that by dying in the blast she would deny Ishido and his conspirators the chance to use her and make Ishido look bad with her last words.

I may be wrong, but I think the vertical line, opposed to all the horizontal ones, is exactly how Blackthorne feels: alone, isolated among thousands of lines that go in another direction, one he cannot understand. He has no power to change the course of events. He is frustrated. A very strong episode, it made me shudder, because it reminds us that the most beautiful things in life can be at the same time painful and leave us vulnerable. The best series I've seen in years...Yabushige is a traitor as much as a survivor, but no, he did not want to kill Mariko but to neutralise her.

I saw that as the perfect garden representing Japan and all the culture he has seen here -- it makes some sort of sense to itself. The vertical line is him -- he is there, unable to integrate harmoniously with the rest of Japan. He is begging Mariko to save herself, because nothing else makes sense to him -- but Mariko is part of Japan, she will do things to be in harmony with Japan. So even with him begging for things to make sense for him, the rest of Japan refuses to bend to him. But he can't accept this, and cannot let go of how he feels, what he wants, and what he thinks is right. So he is the straight line that stands apart from the harmonious Japan that is all around him.

12:46 Yabushige knows the point of how the poem was bad in that scene like everyone else in the hall, only except Ishido and Anjin. Ishido is an upstart from the peasant class, not culturally educated, so when he praised her poem, it unveiled the education gap between Ishido and the others. In addition, the word "Ochiba 落葉" means "fallen leaves", so this poem "Kare-e 枯枝 (Leafless Branch)" is an insinuation against her.

John showed how much he loved Mariko to be her second. It was him putting her wishes above his own happiness. He was willing to live the rest of his life in pain to be the one to end her pain (the actual purpose of a second). Compare that to her relationship with Buntaro (and really a lot of men in that era) who put his happiness and wishes before hers.

Drama name = historical name Yoshii Toranaga = Tokugawa Ieyasu Buntaro Toda Hirokatsu = Tadaoki Hosokawa Mariko Toda = Tama Hosokawa (Garasha) 1543-1616 /75 years old Yoshii Toranaga = Tokugawa Ieyasu 1563-1646/ 83 years old Buntaro Toda Hirokatsu = Tadaoki Hosokawa He has a handsome face and has trained in martial arts and culture to become the strongest samurai. He got his first job at the age of 15, and it was a great job. He received a handwritten letter of appreciation from Nobunaga and became Nobunaga's favorite. Tadaoki was famous as the short-tempered military commander of the Sengoku period. When he was stopped by the inspector, he got angry and beheaded him. Tadaoki killed all the enemies who surrendered. (At this point, his superiors are warned not to kill anyone who surrenders.) When training his men, the second time was fine, but the third time I cut off his head Tadaoki Hosokawa was the strongest berserker of the Sengoku period and the most loving wife. 1582 He deeply loved Tama (Garasha), her legal wife, and did not divorce her even after her father, Mitsuhide Akechi, caused the Honnoji Incident, and imprisoned her to avoid the death penalty. However, Tadaoki frequently visited this area, and Garasha gave birth to a child. In order to free him from Garasha's captivity, he rampages through the battlefield like a demon and rises to prominence. Tadaoki's war exploits were recognized and the prisoners of Garasha were released. Tadaoki was jealous of Garasha and locked her up while his men watched and did not let her leave her room. Garasha heard the story of Christ from Tadaoki. he was interested Garasha was happily talking to Tadaoki about various things. As a result, she was baptized without telling Tadaoki. Around this time, Christianity had already been recognized as a xie jiao and had begun to be eliminated, so she begged Garasha to quit. However, when Garasha stubbornly refused, Tadaoki became furious and cut off the nose and ears of her maid who helped her baptize. Garasha was angry at this and stopped talking to Tadaoki. Because Garasha didn't talk to me. Tadaoki also tacitly acknowledged this. When Tadaoki went on an expedition 10 years after his marriage, Tadaoki frequently wrote letters to Garasha. 1600 His wife Tamako (Garasha), who was in Osaka Castle's Hosokawa residence, was attacked by Ishida Mitsunari (Ishido) and refused to be taken hostage, but since suicide is prohibited in Christianity, his senior vassal Hidekiyo Ogasawara was attacked by Garasha. was beheaded. Explosives were placed in the mansion so that Garasha's body would not be left behind. Hidekiyo Ogasawara committed suicide. Tadaoki is holding Garasha's funeral at the church. 1563-1600 37 years old Children are 3 boys and 2 girls 1600 John Blackthorne = Anjin Miura 1564-1620 56 years old He became Tokugawa Ieyasu's 250 koku hatamoto and spent his entire life in Japan. From the above, Hosokawa Garasha and Miura Anjin are not acquainted. If the two had met like in a drama Miura Anjin would have been beheaded by Hosokawa Tadaoki. Hosokawa Garasha Death Poem original ``Only when you know when it's time to cleanse yourself can flowers become flowers and people become people.'' Current Japanese "Flowers are beautiful because they know when to fall. Humans must be like that too. Now is the time to fall." Meaning of death phrase "The righteous person's path is to know and accept his or her end." *Death haiku is the last haiku of a person's life written in anticipation of death.Jisei means to bid farewell to this world. The last haiku that our ancestors wrote in this world in anticipation of their impending death is the haiku haiku. This includes not only haiku written on the verge of death, but also haiku written in anticipation of death, and haiku written at the end of one's life without being aware of death.

There is a Japanese idiom that conveys a similar meaning to the death poem you referenced: "花は桜木人は武士" which translates to "among flowers the cherry blossom, among men, the samurai." It also speaks to the impermanence of things, that short life can be more beautiful, because every moment of it is savored all the more.

It would be great if Mariko were still alive, but the historical facts are as follows. Mitsunari Ishida (Ishido in SHOGUN), who was an enemy of Ieyasu(Toranaga in SHOGUN), tried to take Garasha Hosokawa (Mariko Toda in SHOGUN) hostage at Tamatsukuri's Hosokawa mansion in Osaka, but Garasha refused. The next day, Mitsunari went out to use his force and had his soldiers surround the mansion. When the vassals told Garasha everything, Garasha prayed a little, then gathered all the maids and ladies in the mansion and said, ``As my husband has commanded, I alone want to die,'' and led them outside. . Later, as suicide is prohibited in Christianity, the chief retainer, Hidekiyo Ogasawara (Shosai), intervened with Garasha and committed suicide by setting explosives in the mansion and setting it on fire so that no body would be left behind. Her death haiku was, ``Only when you know when it is time to scatter can flowers in this world become flowers and people become people.'' A few hours after her death, Father Niecchi Sordi Organtino visited the burnt remains of the Hosokawa mansion, picked up Garasha's bones, and buried them in the Christian cemetery in Sakai.

As a Japanese person, I will explain. Mariko was the only target for the ninjas, but if they had just blasted the door open and broken in, they would have all been killed. However, when the door exploded and the ninjas confirmed that Mariko was dead, they should have left, and Mariko chose that method in order to prevent others from becoming involved.

Mariko's model was a real woman named Hosokawa Galaicia. She was the daughter of a traitor who killed her lord, became a Christian, and was deeply loved by her husband. She ordered her entourage to kill her so that Ishida, Ishido's model, would not take her hostage. To protect her love for her husband and to avoid self-determination as a Christian, she died by a sword held out from behind a door. Her death turned her neutral husband completely against Ishida. Had he been on Ishida's side, the final battle would have been quite different. Her death was one of the incidents that created the peace that lasted for the next 260 years. In my opinion, Gracia was one of the saints who stopped 140 years of warfare.

The next day, Mitsunari took a forceful action and had his soldiers surround the mansion. When the vassals told Galasha what had happened, Galasha prayed a little and gathered all the maids and ladies in the house, saying, "I want to die alone, as my husband has commanded," and sent them out. Since suicide is forbidden by Christianity, the retainer Ogasawara Hidekiyo (Shosai) interceded with Galacha, who then set fire to the house with explosives so that no body would be left behind, and committed suicide. Ishido sends in assassins. His ploy to give Mariko permission to leave just provided “air cover” to him where he could say that he allowed her to leave but has no idea who killed her. Even if it’s obvious he had her killed he’d still be able to lie and the gullible and the lairs would allow him to get away with it. We see similarities in modern politics, even when assassinations are used. Like JFK & MLK & Robert Kennedy were all assassinated by a lone shooter… right!

I’m sure a whole lot of y’all Crimson Cried. Welcome to the Crimson Herring. Despite my criticism in previous episodes about how Mariko the wife continued to handle her domestic affairs, especially after how the truth of as to why she was kept alive has laready been revealed; I do have all the respect in the world for Mariko, the Retainer. She fulfilled her duty and managed to say out loud what every Lord in Osaka was feeling but were too afraid to say. And she was committed to everything to the end. (Minor Tangent: I am happy the gate scene was not a "girl-power mopping the floor with all those men" moment) Now all of Osaka's Lords are soured against Ishido; and Ochiba might have to put the engagement on hold in order to Mourn Mariko. Her mission is a success. Speaking of which, it’s so heartwarming and heart breaking that “Leave us” scene between Mariko and Ochiba. I'm Happy Ruri-hime did not just outright hate Mariko for being her father's daughter; but their exchange was so heartbreaking as they both knew each other so well and what the other was doing and them pleading with each other to make the step to end the hostilities, and saying their goodbyes like that... it was made clear: Ochoba was willing to do anything to continue on living, while Mariko was samurai through and through and was trying to convince her that the duty is what is most important. The fact that Ochiba-Sam’s had to turn away to hide her tears and she can’t maintain her mask )9 fold fence) was just Gold. i think I'm sweating through my eyes. And Blackthorne finally doing the right thing and deciding to Second Mariko, instead of just dismissing all of Japan's customs and cultures as BS , that was the best gift he could have ever given her. So much so that despite my misgivings about Mariko the wife; their last night of intimacy was completely EARNED; despite all your valid concerns which I mostly agree with.🥹🥹🥹 And thankfully, Ishido stepped in, because Blackthorne was already shown as not capable of properly wielding that sword. Yabushige's betrayal was to Kidnap Mariko AND not lay a hand on any of the VIPs (it was shown on screen that Shizu and Kiri was not killed when the shinobi identified them in their sleep). They need to make it look like some bandits or assassins got to her while she was sneaking off in the evening despite getting her permits: that was why the shinobi did not kill her right away, but rather were trying to take her away. Mariko became aware of this right away and chose where to meet her end: she did not go to the gate where she would get captured as Yabushige intended. Having grown up there with Ochiba, she knew what would happen when she chose to hole up in the store house.

Dono/Tono roughly translates to lord/master. A simple way to respectfully address nobles. The 🥷🏽 tapping his shoulder was his way of counting the seconds.

I know how you felt watching the end of Mariko san's life in our world. I suspect that this show wouldn't just save her from the sad but honorable suicide she intended earlier. What will Buntaro do after learning her ending in this manner. Beautiful tears from you. Gracias.

The Latin prayer which Fr Martin sings at the Slient Credit is actually taken from Psalm 51 Asperges me. Aspérges me, Dómine, hyssópo, et mundábor: lavábis me, et super nivem dealbábor. Miserére mei, Deus, secúndum magnam misericórdiam tuam. Thou shalt sprinkle me, O Lord, with hyssop, and I shall be cleansed; Thou shalt wash me, and I shall become whiter than snow. Have mercy on me, O God, according to Thy great mercy. kzread.info/dash/bejne/pYaFk5ObidnMhrQ.htmlsi=6nfdCIwKXefa56A8

Dono is used when the opponent is equal or lower rank, but sama is used in either case. By the way, the language of this era is called Yamato language, and it is different from the language used by us modern Japanese, and there are many things that we do not understand.
