@@Snaakie83 there’s nothing wrong with using oversight. Blind people say “I’ll see you later,” “I watched tv,” and “I’m looking for the pill I dropped” even if we are not using our eyes for those functions.

"She got here because I said 'find the counter" and I gave her a kibble." This is why so many service dogs are labs and goldens. Retrievers will literally take you to the ends of the Earth and back in exchange for a "good doggy" and a piece of kibble.

The thinking in the UK is that when toilets are busy non disabled people often use the disabled toilets which can be a problem for people with incontinence issues as is common with many forms of disability, it also keeps the public disabled toilets MUCH cleaner than the regular ones which is great especially if you're there to do something like change a stoma bag where you really don't want the toilet to be filthy (not every place is part of the radar system, though most are, and it really makes a difference). It also prevents gross things like using the larger room for sex or taking drugs. Radar keys are very easy for any disabled person to get, I have several, and the staff if you're in a place like a shopping centre, restaurant ect will always have extras if you forget yours.

I feel like they should definitely keep disabled bathrooms separate from regular bathrooms, so no one has to experience sitting there waiting for the only stall you can use.

It varies at different places in the US. Toilets in buildings built after the 1970s are legally required to have braille signs. But the toilets aren't typically locked, just a bigger stall for individuals in wheelchairs. Most guide dog users I met have the pup in the stall if s/he fits. I think my biggest question is how do you know when your bum is clean or if you've left some "monthly glitter" on the seat. My mom just laughed when I asked.

But eventually, someone who was actually blind (or possibly who had a blind sibling or friend) replied that they fold the toilet paper instead of crumpling it, and after wiping they would fold it in half again, and if it didn't stick together, then they were done.

Hi small correction - radar keys SHOULD get you into any accessible toilet across the UK BUT they don't always because some public toilets can still be locked to outsiders by the maintenance team of the public place. For example, some train stations lock their accessible toilets so you'd need an additional key from staff as well as the radar key (which you can buy btw, I have one) A lot of shopping centres locked their accessible toilets during covid when most shops were shut and restaurants were operating and reduced capacity. Which I can understand as they locked most toilets in this instance but I disagree with this anyway lol, you should be able to find a safe and usable place to pee when out and about. Especially in a country with public indecency laws haha Train staions I've seen do this: Ipswich, Manchester picadilly, Leeds, Stockport, Nottingham, Sheffield, Newcastle upon Tyne, Durham, Chesterfield, Liverpool lime Street, the other Liverpool one, the smaller London one, Manchester Victoria Again, these are supposedly public accessible toilets that should be locked only by a radar key. Shopping centres that did this during lockdown: eldon Square in Newcastle and Victoria centre in Nottingham. This is all anecdotal btw. It could be that all these stations and shopping centres were only gatekeeping access to the accessible toilet on the days and times I was there. It's a bit much to be a coincidence though. Also, don't get me started on how most "accessible toilets" aren't actually accessible because of room layout, lack of grab rails, bins blocking the call for help string etc etc 😅

I'm not blind, mobility impaired and autistic, but most UK disabled toilets are so similar in layout I can even go in there with my very dark sunglasses which makes me almost blind in most toilets (too dark), and still find my way around without having to lift them up. I don't know if that is also a thing that helps you inside toilets, but I know it has helped me. (I suffer from light sensitivity at times hence the dark sunglasses).

That is a really clever idea to have a universal key for disabled bathrooms would make life much more pleasant ide imagine for anyone with a disability we need those here in canada but dedicated disabled bathrooms are very rare here usually its just a stall in the public bathroom so people that are not disabled typically will use it as they are much bigger stalls and in a corner thankfully ive very rarely witnessed it causing a issue but likely someone with a disability would be able to tell many stories of issues in a public bathroom

I rarely see them with a mortice lock though, instead with flat keys making the radar key useless.

Bless you. I take my sight for granted and I don't think I'd want to carry on if I lost it. Just the simple things we do are more difficult for people such as yourself. Thanks for sharing this.

Everywhere I have lived in the US, it's required to have public restrooms along with a wheelchair accessible toilet stall. I've only seen them locked at gas stations. Usually they're unlocked, but on the downside, they can be full of people, loud, and difficult to get around.

Exactly why they're locked in the UK. They keys are really cheap so I have a bunch and there are always spares with the staff. Also I hate the regular toilets with the disabled stalls in them, they're so difficult to navigate with a wheelchair. The disabled loos with radar keys are generally much cleaner than regular public toilets too which is always a plus.

No Braille signage reminds me of situation which happened with me, when I was at post office and there was a bell button for disabled people with Braille under it, but Braille was only a drawing of dots and they were flat🤦🏻‍♀️

a universal key for handicap bathrooms sounds great! here in The US people don't care if it's a handicap stall. Same goes for family restrooms 🤦‍♀️

When I have heard people talk about these "radar keys" I thought that meant some kind of electronic/NFC key that was a lot simpler to use than like an actual key you have to find the hole for and inert the right way and turn. Surely that would have been even more accessible?
