I'm an American surrogate and I'm carrying a Chinese baby

Surrogacy in the United States has become more popular than ever, but paying women to carry someone else's fertilized egg is raising complex legal and ethical issues. Lisa Ling explores the taboo trend.

  • @Ayveh

Not really, an average american makes 20k or less a year, well depending on where you live. With this yes you do have to do it full time for 9 months however it's different, you can take those 9months off and not work and focus on doing things you like, like reading, watching dramas/tv shows or things that you can do while pregnant and still make money to be able to pay the bills. They also pay more dependong on where you live, and who is the one asking for the baby. There are lots of Rich Chinese couples that do it so their child can be an US & CHINESE citizen, and then later on in life that lets the also become US citizens. Incase you don't know some Chinese wealthy couples have more money than you can imagine so they are willing to pay a lot more.

Pregnancy in general is something I don’t want to experience, I would consider surrogacy but I don’t see the need in bringing another child in the world when I could adopt an already living child.

So many people criticize the fact that they spent a lot of money to have a biological child instead of adopting, but their decision should be respected. Some people dream of having a baby that’s biologically theirs, some dream of adopting a child to love and care for. When you want a dog, you can adopt or buy one and that choice is respected, so why is it different with a baby?

ji jiji your comment reflects just how little you know about surrogacy. Before the baby is even made there is a lawyer and a legal process to go through. Why are you talking about something you clearly know nothing about? Also in the case of birth defects you can put in the legal agreement that a child with birth defects must be aborted ect ect . The parents have complete legal control, there is no “taking the baby” it’s not yours.

ji jiji What is a heavily pregnant woman going to do run? No. And when she has the baby she would have to go to a hospital. What if the child get sick? Or needs to be enrolled in school? She will turn up eventually. It’s a child NOT a TV - there would be amber alerts PSAs and people looking for them moron. The police would hunt her down. She wouldn’t make it far and statistically, someone running off with a baby they were a surrogate is rare and highly unlikely.

I would do it for the money, I've actually looked into it, but there are a lot of requirements. And most of the time the requirement is that you at least be in your mid 20s, making it impossible unless you started college late or you're a grad student. And personally, I don't think that's enough money, so I'm gonna pass. They also require you to have your own child first, and I don't know very many college students with children. Along with that, you have to be "financially stable" for some odd reason. Too many requirements of college students.

You can do it for someone you know. It is illegal to charge for surrogacy. I agree with this law as it prevents the exploitation of poor women. It's the different between donating a kidney to your sister versus paying for a kidney (organ trafficking). As soon as you allow people to charge for organs it develops into a dangerous industry hence issues with organ harvesting overseas.

  • @51Saffron

You can't just adopt from China, just like that. They only have special needs toddlers/children available for adoption. At one time they did have a "healthy" infant program, mostly girls, but attitudes in China have changed. Girls are not being abandoned as they were in previous decades. We adopted our son from China in 2006, he was special needs, minor, however many of the children available now have multiple special needs. Many countries have closed their international adoption programs. Adoption is not the same as in the past and it is not quick like they make out on television. It it lengthy. People were waiting up to 7 years to receive a referral from CHina for a non special needs baby girl. We have also adopted from Haiti, and that in itself back in 2003 was a roller coaster. You have to deal with adopting country governments, US state laws and federal laws and extensive paperwork and background checks. So surrogacy for many will give them an easier way to build a family and for many people biological children are important, and that is absolutely normal. Our children are teenagers now and are amazing, so for us it was the right decision.

First time she was paid 25k, the second time 37.5k. She doesn't know how to negotiate. Actually for a foreigner couple, like Chinese, you can ask for 100-150k USD. It is still very cheap in a Chinese middle class couple's eyes. It is an acceptable price in China. The biological mom can continue to get paycheck and her career won't be compromised during the surrogate pregnancy. not to mention the child was born with an American citizenship automatically. People would like to pay more for that. 25k or 37.5k is too cheap. I suppose the large part of the payment must have been taken by the middleman.

Top 3 reasons Chinese parents choose USA surrogacy over surrogacy in Thailand or the Philippines. 1) US citizenship for the child. The belief that USA is paradise on earth makes many people in the developing world dream of living, studying or working in the US. Eventually, the whole family might move to the US and gain US citizenship. 2) Having half white baby. Notice that nearly all the surrogate mothers are white. Most people in Asia, Africa and Latin America have severe inferiority complex towards white people thanks to memories leftover from the colonial era (yes, I know some Latinos are white but most are not). The Chinese, in particular, have acute inferiority complex towards Caucasians. 3) Top medical care. I think rich Chinese moving to the US is far better for the US than poor immigrants who add to the poverty rate. USA should make it easier for rich foreigners to gain US citizenship.

This is good that you have decided to advertise yourself. I have had my first surrogacy in Kiev, Ukraine. And now I am thinking of having the second surrogacy procedure probably in South Africa. So with going through with what you provide. I decided to get more information concerning surrogacy in South Africa. Only uncompensated surrogacy is permitted. Although reimbursement for pregnancy-related expenses is required. Additionally, the couple must be legally married and there must be a signed agreement by all parties and the surrogate must become pregnant within 18 months of the signed agreement. All parties should be living in South Africa at the signing of the agreement. And a court in the jurisdiction where the surrogate mother is residing must confirm the agreement. In addition, complete confidentiality must be maintained regarding the best online casino identity of the child born from this agreement.

I'm one of those babies, but honestly it's a choice. Am I grateful for being brought to America from china? Of course! But it's also extremely expensive!!! People don't really take that into mind... there are lawyer fees, adoption fees, and so much more. I was more than $20,000... just to get custody of... that's soooo much money and not everyone has that much to spend upfront. Yeah... I'm adopted, but I still want my own children. My own biological children. And something else people don't really consider is health defeats. A lot of children who are in orphanages have unknown medical histories and that's really dangerous and some people just don't wanna live in the unknown...

Katie that could be entirely true also, but it's also a choice. Adoption isn't for everyone!! Just bc someone can't carry a child of their own shouldn't deny them of having that right to have biological children. We have technology enabling them to have those biological children whereas before that wasn't an option. Let them choose!! That's like telling a couple who are fully capable of having children that's wrong and they should adopt... they have that right to choose where they get their children from...It's a preference.

I saw an ad before and it was looking for women age 21-39 Probably since most younger women are not as mentally mature as a 25 year old would be. Not only that but sometimes the mothers have that "I don't want to give this child, it's mine, I am taking you to court even though I signed a form giving up rights to it" and then they have to deal with that. I feel like when you are younger you are more unstable with your feelings and knowing how to control them unlike when you get older and are more experienced. That or due to most younger teen adults (18-19) want to party and still enjoy being young, they don't want to be stuck at home, they want to go out and do things, have sex with different people, experiment and so on.

For some couples opting for surrogacy is a very straight forward decision. While, for others there are lots of things to be considered and thought about before taking the decision. There are lots of complex issues involved. It is an emotional roller coaster ride for the couple. The families and friends. It is a decision where the ‘right’ and the ‘wrong’ are very individual things. An infertility specialist or a counselor can help the couple seeing things in the right perspective. Other options such as, adoption or further infertility treatment can also be considered. It is for this reason that many people are opting for surrogacy. But in this case it feels like child trafficking. Most Chinese are doing this for the child to obtain America citizenship. I have been through surrogacy in Kiev, Ukraine and I have never heard of such cases. I hope with time this will be stopped.

Janet Rojas I think more like its most beneficial for them in for it to be in America. How many countries allow this? How many countries allow both biological parents (ie the mother who didn't carry the baby) on the birth certificate? Of course the baby being an American citizen is a major bonus but i'm sure if China allowed this as freely as a lot of American states did, the Chinese couple would of just done it in their own country where the surrogate mother would speak the same language, easier to access and visit, etc etc.

I suppose, I should have said I think it's complex, complicated, mysterious, scientific, powerful, otherworldly, and sur-real. I have been called weird myself countless, countless times.. It really hurt in the past.. To be called weird by people constantly. Yet, you know what? Over the years I came to realize that I fit the orriginal dictionary definition of the word: which is.. One who Ha s the weirding way is one having power over others to be able to garner a reaction, response or reply., The ability to cast spells. So, later, when people called me weird.. I took took it as an unintended compliment. It made me feel a little bit better, but ultimately, it still hurt because what I really wanted was for them to just love and accept me as I was, and not call me an insulting word, like weird. So, therefore, let me take back what I said, for, if I speak, I do not want to say hurtful things..For I Love PEOPLE.

I would SO do this. To me, I just feel like I’m providing the baby with a little safe haven while they develop. As long as it is not my own egg, I’d totally be up for this. The greatest gift to give someone who isn’t able to carry their own.

Why not adopt? So many children being left behind by irresponsible parents and being put into a systems that often does more bad than good. :(
