The best speeches by Michael, sometime hotel worker and BP minishop attendant. A Newcastle Sancho Panza to Alan's Norwich-based Don Rickles. Masterfully played by Simon Greenall.

‘Michael, do you ever think suicide is the answer?’ ‘Sometimes like, when I see you sitting there looking all depressed’.
The awkwardness of the cup of beans scene is powerful.

The Apache Helicopter rant is of my favourite moments in all of TV comedy, especially the slow look of horror appearing on Alan's face and the casual, "oh..he's just a mate" ending. Genius.

I know a few people quite like Michael. He’s such a well observed character, the actor who plays him is really inhabiting the persona of a Geordie ex-squaddie. Mainly based on my experience of being born in and living in Newcastle for 25 years until I joined the navy, and then my experiences with other people from Newcastle in the navy and the armed forces at large. He’s one of Alan’s only friends because like Alan, he is completely without any self-awareness, particularly when it comes to the tragedy of his own situation.

I like the look of a cup of beans . I especially like the sound the cup makes when he puts it on the doorstep , very satisfying.
Geordie Michael was a great character in the series. Credit to Simon Greenall for his brilliant acting. When Michael was around, Alan could be the rational one and the voice of reason
Michael deserves his own spin off.

Apparently at the audition all Simon Greenall was told that the character was called Michael, worked in a hotel and got on with Alan. He had to come up with the rest. He was going to do Michael with a Yorkshire accent but he changed it at the very last to a Geordie accent and from there it stuck.

2:37 Is such a weird awkward scene, a cup of beans, won't allow Alan in his house, doesn't have a spoon, shuts the door on his face leaving him standing there eating beans while Michael is still standing at the door and tells him to leave the cup on the doorstep, just so strange lol

Spoon in the bathroom (seemingly the ONLY spoon), the cup of beans, the nervous disposition, the dealer-type guy, the reluctancy to let Alan into his house, even the looking back through the glass door pane to see that Alan’s gone... possibly Michael is a smackhead.
